“Perfect place to stay”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

Have stayed here twice now and it is the perfect place to stay to see Florence being right in the centre near to the Ponte Vecchio up a relatively quiet side street. The staff are delightful, speak perfect English and are very helpful. Only downside is the stairs up to the hotel, although there is an ancient little lift, all part of the atttraction though. We had a spacious room with a view of the Arno, with a lovely bathroom, what more can you want ? I'm sure we shall return.

Room Tip: I guess you get what you pay for.

Stayed twice? Then you are a regular Wolfy! But we beg to differ about our stairs (we always do!). We are very clear that we are not the right hotel for anyone with mobility issues (weak knees, lots of toddlers and buggies, wheelchair - any kind of mobility issues) excluding anyone with an extra pound or three. Our stairs will have you fit and gorgeous in no time, at no extra cost ;-)

Thanks so much - and we are already looking forward to visit number three.

I found this hotel in a guide book and booked it on the strength of other positive Trip Advisor reviews. It lived up to its reputation as a quality hotel in the heart of Florence. It is a family-run hotel and they are professionals at service as well as congenial hosts. My reservation was a bit complicated as I needed two rooms - a double room and a small suite. They not only kept track of who was staying in which room, but they also accommodated a last-minute request for an additional night.

I especially appreciated their knowledge of the city and great restaurant recommendations. Signora Gennarini telephoned restaurants on my behalf and and made reservations for us, saving much time and confusion. We were greated with friendly hellos each time we came and went from the hotel, and staff were always ready to book museums, tours or travel if we needed it. There is a comfortable public sitting area to the side of the lobby as well as a desktop computer available for guest use. There is also free wi-fi for laptops, iPad, etc.

We booked a double room for our grown children and splurged on the Suite Baccio for ourselves. The double room was decorated nicely with brocade bedspreads and botanical prints on the walls. Like most of Italy, the building is older but the room was spacious, with upgraded bathroom facilities. Everything was tidy and spotlessly clean. The Baccio suite exceeded my expectations. It was apartment-sized, with a salon/reading room, separate bedroom, bathroom and yet another small room for dining or just sitting and looking out the window at the tremendous view of the clock tower (almost close enough to touch!), the river, and a cafe several floors below. There is lots of natural light coming through the windows, with two sets of shutters to block the sun or the street noise if you wish. The bell tower does chime during the day, but not at night and the shutters block out much of the noise if it is a bother.

We were less than a 5-minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi Museum. The Firenze SMN train station is also close, 10-15 minutes on foot or a short taxi ride. Literally every art museum and attraction was within walking distance. This provided great opportunities for exploring the smaller, less traveled streets where we found many delightful places to eat and shop. We never needed to go out for breakfast though, as the hotel provides a delicious breakfast in their own kitchen from 7:30-10:30 each morning.

My only negative comment would be that like many older buildings in Rome, Florence and other Italian cities, this one has only a small elevator and it is located on the "First" floor, not the ground floor. It is necessary to take two flights of stairs to reach the elevator, so keep this in mind if you have a lot of luggage.

I hope to return to Florence soon and I will most definitely be staying at Hotel Alessandra again. It is a jewel in the crown of Florence hotels.

Room Tip: Higher floors have a lovely view of the river. Hotel staff will happily make museum and restaurant r...

Oh no! Oh no that will not do! Our stairs - a negative point? Never! In recent years those stairs have become the highlight of our hotel. We have learnt to love our stairs and not be afraid of their impact on our guests, have learnt to "sell" all the great benefits of our stairs (great toned legs, eat as much ice-cream as you can, have a third plate of pasta, go for that second bottle of wine!) Where would we be without our stairs? (on the ground floor obviously and very glum...)

Thank you thank you - we loved reading this, and will be sharing with our staff and our stairs, who have recently greatly contributed to our success!

I was visiting Florence at the end of March with my husband and 14 year old son and we spent four nights at Hotel Alessandra. We loved the hotel and the staff there. Hotel has a perfect location, 3 minute walk to Ponte Vecchio and 8 minute walk to Uffizi Gallery and Piazza della Signoria, and 15 minute walk to the train station. The hotel itself is located on a very charming and quiet street away from the crowds and traffic. The rooms are nicely furnished and spacious, breakfast very good, the best we had in Italy, and very, very friendly staff. My fourtenn year old and my picky husband loved this hotel. We will definetly come back to this hotel when back in Florence.

An outstanding hotel - right in the middle of everything in Florence, but it's on a side street, so not much traffic and noise if you need some quiet time in the room. One of the best hotel breakfasts we had in Italy (not just the typical dry roll and coffee...they have actual breakfast here). The staff is hugely helpful with restaurant recommendations, getting tickets last minute to the museums, etc. If we ever make it back to Florence, we won't even look into staying anywhere else. Some stairs to get up to your room...but no more than other Italian hotels.

Breakfast is important! We don't want our guests swooning on the streets of Florence mid-morning. Thank you so much - and we have our fingers crossed for that return visit.

Stayed here for three nights and was so glad I did. Location is excellent. Near most major attractions. Easy walking distance from the Santa Maria Novella Station. Streets are very narrow in Florence, so the smaller amount of luggage you can bring, the better. This is also helpful when you arrive at the hotel. You have to go up many steps before getting to a small elevator. I only used the elevator upon arrival and departure. There is a reception area immediately after you enter the hotel. The owner and his staff were amazing. All speak excellent English and really knew how to provide great service. They went beyond the call of duty to assist.
I booked a room with a separate private bath. They were great. The room was large, though a bit dark. The window opened. There was a king bed and a desk & chair, a good sized closet and a sink in the room. Next door was a separate, large bathroom that was solely my own. Inside a large tub with shower, another sink and toilet. It took me awhile to master the keys going from my room to the bathroom, but it was no problem.
Each morning a good breakfast was served in a sunny room near reception. Excellent warm croissants and a good choice of other foods. The breakfast staff was always helpful.
The hotel also recently added a terrace that provides a nice view of the Arno. I sat there one day as the sun went down enjoying the weather and the view.
This hotel was charming, a great value and provided a very friendly, helpful staff. I would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Florence has very narrow streets. Don't bring a lot with you in terms of luggage.

My wife and I spent five nights at Hotel Alessandra, and really, we can heartily recommend it further if you are planning a trip to Florence. The room was nice and clean, as well as a toilet and a separate shower room had just been renovated. The breakfast was delicious and the service as a whole commendable. If ever we return to Florence then this hotel is a solid choice. Thank you!

And thank you for staying with us! We’re so glad you appreciated our new renovations (you should have seen the dust!) and thought our service and breakfast were great as well! Hopefully you’ll come back and stay with us before we’re forced to renovate this old 500 year old building again!
