“Best location possible in Florence”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2009

I have stayed at the Villani many times in the past, and it has never changed: a simple, very clean, basic little hotel on the 4th floor of a building in the most fantastic location in Florence: from the breakfast room you can almost touch the Campanile and the Duomo.Despite being in the center, you hear no noise and it seems like it should be the site of a movie, like "Room with a View".
The rooms are very simple, with TV, safe, phone, decent lighting, and small bathrooms, hairdryer. Some of the rooms have showers that need stepping into over a ledge, which may be difficult for some visitors. Others sometimes have the water escape onto the floor, but I have found that this can be corrected by simply bringing a throw away rag with me (which I always have in my suitcase anyway, because you never know which hotel you might need it in). The breakfast is simple: just juice, rolls/fette biscottate/croissant, butter and jam and a hot drink. Remember, this is a 2 star hotel. But there are two features which make it far more special. The first is the absolutely breathtaking roof garden, where one can sit and just drink in the entire view over Florence, which is too beautiful for words. The second are the owners, Erminio and Michele Villani, who are true gems. Always there, always available, always helpful, always making you feel totally at home. In fact, the Villani feels less like a hotel than a bunch of rooms in someone's apartment. If it is any kind of luxury you are looking for, this is not the place. If you want simple, good value for money and also the benefit of getting to know two extraordinary Florentines who will always make you feel welcome and give you the best recommendations possible for anything you may need, this is the place to stay.

Myself, spouse and adult daughter stayed in a triple room for five nights the last week in October. The room was very satisfactory with an adequate bathroom. As advertised, a great view of the Duomo. It's also within easy walking distance of everything. Mr. Villani was most helpful in arranging museum tickets and just being nice. As other reviewers have noted the gem of the place is the roof terrace with drop dead views of both the Duomo and greater Florence. Each afternoon we bought wine and beer at a local store and spent a relaxing hour or so on the terrace. We also spent one lunch there with take out food. The breakfast consists of rolls, juice and excellent cappichino. The Ritz it ain't, but if by some good fortune we get back to Florence again, we will most definately stay there.

The Hotel Villani is a little-known gem just a block south of the Duomo in Florence. It is hidden away on the 4th floor of an anonymous building on a tiny medieval street. You have no idea, riding up in the lilliputian elevator and entering the unadorned lobby, what awaits you down the zig-zag corridors.

The owner, native Florentine Erminio Villani, greets you with near-perfect English. Your room is comfortable, simple and scrupulously clean, with ensuite bathroom, air conditioning, tv, wi-fi and mini-fridge. So far, so good. Then you look out the windows. Pow! Is that the … gulp … DUOMO staring you in the face? Yes it is. Or, depending on which room you have, the undulating rooftops of the centro storico leading the eye to the tower of the Palazzo Vecchio and the city beyond.

But wait, it gets better. Signor Villani will happily show you to the rooftop terrace (stairs only) possibly the closest any hotel guest in Florence can get to that icon of the Renaissance, the Duomo. And at breakfast in the morning, while he sings cheerfully and hospitably prepares cup after cup of cappuccino, you gaze through an enormous open window at Giotto’s belltower. When the bells ring the Angelus, your hair will stand on end, so strongly do you feel the spirit of the ancient city.

There are hotels with more stars and more Euro signs attached to their names, and they have their charms. But comfort is assured at the Villani, and with Giotto and Brunelleschi as your “exterior decorators”, you have a special relationship to art, to history and to Florence.

Brilliant location. Open your window and you are looking at the Duomo.

The room we stayed in was large and with an amazing view. We slept with the window open as we couldn't resist lying in bed and admiring the changing colour of the Duomo as dawn came about.

The hotel is right in the centre of everything. The hotel owner Ermani was pleasant enough and was helpful. It is an older style hotel with a 1am curfew which was not an issue with us.

Breakfast was sufficient - traditional european style.

Definitely would stay there again.

This is an excellent mid-priced hotel in Florence directly in the city center. The location is simply stellar. It's one block away from the "Duomo" and only two blocks from "Piazza Republica". And the roof-top deck offered is both higher and larger than the 4-star Hotel Brunelleschi next door. The hotel is family owned and operated with only ~13 rooms, so reservations can often be tough to come by, but well worth it.

  • Liked — Perfect location and amazing roof-top terrace.
  • Disliked — Rooms are fairly simple and unadorned, albeit many appear to have wonderful views. There is at least one that has an 18th-century ceiling fresco and wood beams.
