“Nice hotel, amazing staff!”
Reviewed 25 October 2011

The hotel was decent. It was clean, well located, safe, etc. The thing that earned it five stars for me was the staff: they were so nice and helpful! Every morning, the owner would come up to us at breakfast (nice breakfast, by the way) and ask us what our plans were for the day, offer suggestions, etc. Everyone there was so nice and helpful. I would definitely stay there again!

We booked Hotel Giglio after being concerned that the hotel we originally reserved wasn't going to be wonderful. Wished we kept the old booking because although Hotel Giglio was nice, it wasn't worth the extra cash. The hotel is housed on the second floor of a building, much like some hostels we have stayed in. The entrance was a bit dark and narrow. Our room was exceptionally large but not that wonderful; hard bed, not very updated. I expected more for the price. The room was extremely cold when we first arrived, and after complaining several times, it was fixed.

Unfortunately there was construction happening all around the building while we stayed there. The building was surrounded by scaffolding outside our window and workers would start making noise around 8:30am. It definitely woke us up every morning.

Breakfast was very good. Eggs, pastries, yogurt, cereal. Definitely above average. The DVD selection in the lobby was great -- we watched movies a couple of evenings. They also gave us a courtesy ride to the train station since staff person was leaving at the same time as us. Overall, the hotel was good but not worth the extra cost. I would have rather stayed in a lower-priced hotel or hostel.

This hotel is owned by two brothers who run a great business.

The hotel is in an excellent location - 3 min. walk to Accademia Museum, 5 min. to Duomo & the central market, 10 min. to Uffizi Museum and 15 min. to the old bridge. It's also clean and our room is spacious for a family of four and has great character. The bathroom is updated and very clean (my only bathroom complaint is that the shower doesn't have a soap holder).

In addition, they also provide excellent service. They always assisted with our bags, were friendly and gave us rides to the train station and airport! They also printed our boarding passes for the flight home. Housekeeping missed cleaning our room on one day and they offered to make it up with wine. They gave us good recommendations to local restaurants and we got a 10% discount at a couple of them.

Be aware though, this hotel requires climbing of stairs as it's on the second floor but they do have a small elevator for baggage.

Breakfast had all the good choices, assorted pastries, boiled eggs, assorted meats and cheeses, breads and rolls, cereals, yogurt, cut-up fruit and delicious cappuccino. We remained full way past lunch time even with an eventful day of walking.

It was also great to have free wi-fi but it only worked in the common area and the hotel had two laptops for guests to use.

We really enjoyed getting to know their family. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. This is a great little gem we found through Tripadvisor!

Trip Advisor steered us right! Hotel Giglio was a great place to stay. The rooms are sizable with modern, well-equipped bathrooms. Breakfast was excellent. Internet was complimentary in the lobby, which is only steps from the rooms. Marco, his brother, and the rest of the staff were extremely helpful with bags, reservations for the train, recommendations. Marco even took us to the train station when we left. The location is good but did require quite a bit of walking to the Uffizi and the river. Great shopping close by. Good value. Definitely recommend.

I booked this hotel after reading reviews on trip advisor. It lived up to the reviews. The rooms was nice and roomy (especially compared to our room in Rome). The staff were great. There were books & DVD's to use in the lobby. The breakfast was great - there were even hard boiled eggs for that morning protien. And to top it all off, Marco gave us a ride to the airport the morning we were leaving! I wish it were a little closer to the center of downtown but all in all the location is good. We did walk to the train station one day and it wasn't too far. I would recommend it.

On our visit to Florence we found this little gem... Rooms are sizable for Italian standards. The decor reminds me of a bed and breakfast . The staff goes above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. It's a family owned hotel and it shows in the details. It is in a good location for all site seeing and train station. Hotel Giglio helped to make a life time dream come true !!! When we return to Florence this is definitely where we will stay....

This hotel is in a great location. Florence is a fair sized city and I researched loads before booking up, but once I arrived I realised that as long as you are about 10 mins from The Duomo in any direction you are probably going to be ok. Hotel Giglio is a 10 min walk from The Duomo down a nice street with lots of little shops on it. It is also very close to the Acadamia (well worth a visit to see the statue of David) and the San Lorenzo market which is the best place in the city to get good quality leather (bags, coats, wallets, belts etc). We were particularly impressed with the staff at the hotel: whoever was managing the front desk, they were always happy to answer questions and were incredibly helpful with all their advice. It is a family run hotel and their personal touch on everything is very nice to see. Breakfast has been mentioned in other reviews and I concur that it is very good.
Florence has so much to see and do and we found 4 days was a bit tight to do it all, but it is possible. We hired a car too and went down to the Chianti region (we had a stunning lunch in Greve) which was lovely and it was really nice to see a different side of Tuscany as the scenery and views were fabulous. I'm going to do a separate review, but we found a fab little trattoria 'Mangiafuoco Bracerie' which is on Via Guelfa (the road behind Macdonalds) where the service and food were phenomenal. In a big city with so many choices and many of them just tourist joints, this was a great find and I would go back in a heartbeat.
Overall, a good hotel, a beautiful city and somewhere I would definitely return to.
