“great value and location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 November 2011

This hotel is a step back in time to the renaissance, including the night clerk! The room was plain, but had balconies off the the bathroom and sleeping area. Very quiet at night - great bed. Although the room itself was basic, the bathroom was a modern update and very clean. The hotel is a short walk to everything, but is in the residential area (but very safe!!). The advantage here is you can pick up a bottle of water or wine for your room really cheaply from a convenience store on your way back. There is a fridge in the room, and a safe, but it is empty for you to stock. Very unusual. The folks who work and own the hotel are amazing. They go to extraordinary lengths to get things right for you, everyone speaks excellent english, and it is really really clean. It is a great 'character' hotel. Enjoy it!!

My husband and I were travelling in Italy in mid October for our one year anniversary trip. We are both young professionals who typically like to stay in comfortable accomodations (i.e. we wouldn't stay in hostels) but would prefer not to break the bank on a hotel we wouldn't even be staying in for most of the day. Now having the benefit of writing this review after we finished our Italy trip, we can honestly say Hotel Giglio was the best hotel we stayed during out entire stay in Italy (we also visited parts of Tuscany and Rome). Hotel Giglio was perfect for us because it was the best value for what we needed from a hotel. The staff at Hotel Giglio, particulary Marko, the owner, were exactly what we needed at a hotel in a foreign country. They all spoke very good English and were incredibly hospitable. On the first day we arrived, despite the fact it was 9am and our check-in time was 2pm, Marko was accomodating and looked into getting a room ready for us. During our wait he sat down with us, gave us cold glasses of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and proceeded to give us a map of Florence and circle all the sites we would want to see during our stay, including various restaurant suggestions. There is also a full-service bar at the reception area where you can have a a glass of wine before you go to sleep. The breakfast in the morning is great : 4 types of cereals, an assortment of meats and cheeses, pastries, fruit salads, eggs - and someone will ask you as soon as you enter the breakfast area if you want a coffee or cappaccino. All our restaurants were booked for us by the staff at Hotel Giglio and we never had a problem in that regard. The rooms are simple, spacious, clean and comfortable. On our last day, Marko was so kind and drove us (and our huge suitcases) to the train station which saved us probably a 15 minute walk or a 10 Euro cab ride. The location is probably not considered the most central location because I would consider the Duomo as the centre of Florence and it was about a 10-15 min brisk walk away from the Duomo (assuming you don't stop and stare at all the sights you will see on the way to the Duomo). Having said that - we usually ate fairly late and anything you eat in Florence is delicious and filling - so we quite enjoyed the extra hike back to the hotel to walk off the meal. Hotel Giglio is considerably cheaper than some of its counterparts in the centre of Florence - but any discount in price is due to its distance from the centre (also chances are you won't get any great views for your hotel room because you are in a more residential area of Florence) and certainly not due to the lack of service and hospitality. We would happily and highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed at this Hotel as a family in September. What makes this hotel A1 is the service provided during our stay; from the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome and every assistance was provided with whatever we required (eg us Aussies like tea making facilities & when I felt like a cuppa our hosts made us a pot and we could enjoy it in our room-howzat!) so to me that level of service makes a stay enjoyable. I did not find negotiating a set of steps to the lift or the fact the hotel is on a higher level difficult as in Europe that is how it usually is for smaller establishments. The rooms are a good size even for three of us and always very clean; wifi available and the added bonus if you feel like a movie they have a large DVD library for free! Breakfast was good with good selections and certainly got us going for long sightseeing days.. Hotel is in a great location only 5mins walk to Piazza San Marco where there are cafes & a supermarket also Uffizi Galleria and this is a must see when in Florence; also managed to walk to Ponte Vecchio; Palazzo Piti & Boboli gardens easily.. Can highly recommend Hotel Giglio and I look forward to staying there again

The hotel was decent. It was clean, well located, safe, etc. The thing that earned it five stars for me was the staff: they were so nice and helpful! Every morning, the owner would come up to us at breakfast (nice breakfast, by the way) and ask us what our plans were for the day, offer suggestions, etc. Everyone there was so nice and helpful. I would definitely stay there again!

We booked Hotel Giglio after being concerned that the hotel we originally reserved wasn't going to be wonderful. Wished we kept the old booking because although Hotel Giglio was nice, it wasn't worth the extra cash. The hotel is housed on the second floor of a building, much like some hostels we have stayed in. The entrance was a bit dark and narrow. Our room was exceptionally large but not that wonderful; hard bed, not very updated. I expected more for the price. The room was extremely cold when we first arrived, and after complaining several times, it was fixed.

Unfortunately there was construction happening all around the building while we stayed there. The building was surrounded by scaffolding outside our window and workers would start making noise around 8:30am. It definitely woke us up every morning.

Breakfast was very good. Eggs, pastries, yogurt, cereal. Definitely above average. The DVD selection in the lobby was great -- we watched movies a couple of evenings. They also gave us a courtesy ride to the train station since staff person was leaving at the same time as us. Overall, the hotel was good but not worth the extra cost. I would have rather stayed in a lower-priced hotel or hostel.

This hotel is owned by two brothers who run a great business.

The hotel is in an excellent location - 3 min. walk to Accademia Museum, 5 min. to Duomo & the central market, 10 min. to Uffizi Museum and 15 min. to the old bridge. It's also clean and our room is spacious for a family of four and has great character. The bathroom is updated and very clean (my only bathroom complaint is that the shower doesn't have a soap holder).

In addition, they also provide excellent service. They always assisted with our bags, were friendly and gave us rides to the train station and airport! They also printed our boarding passes for the flight home. Housekeeping missed cleaning our room on one day and they offered to make it up with wine. They gave us good recommendations to local restaurants and we got a 10% discount at a couple of them.

Be aware though, this hotel requires climbing of stairs as it's on the second floor but they do have a small elevator for baggage.

Breakfast had all the good choices, assorted pastries, boiled eggs, assorted meats and cheeses, breads and rolls, cereals, yogurt, cut-up fruit and delicious cappuccino. We remained full way past lunch time even with an eventful day of walking.

It was also great to have free wi-fi but it only worked in the common area and the hotel had two laptops for guests to use.

We really enjoyed getting to know their family. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. This is a great little gem we found through Tripadvisor!

Trip Advisor steered us right! Hotel Giglio was a great place to stay. The rooms are sizable with modern, well-equipped bathrooms. Breakfast was excellent. Internet was complimentary in the lobby, which is only steps from the rooms. Marco, his brother, and the rest of the staff were extremely helpful with bags, reservations for the train, recommendations. Marco even took us to the train station when we left. The location is good but did require quite a bit of walking to the Uffizi and the river. Great shopping close by. Good value. Definitely recommend.
