Building on the other reviews - queues can be long, so recommend you arrive early or late in the day. We queued for c.15 minutes by arriving at 17:15hrs in July. Tower closes at 18:50hrs. It is 414 steps to the top so wear sensible shoes, take some water and be prepared for some narrow, fairly dark staircases on the way up / down. So worth the effort once you have made it to the top. Stunning views across the square and the entire City. Also provides a unique view of the Duomo itself. Entry is €10 per person including children under 16 but the ticket is valid for 24 hours and also provides access to the nearby cathedral, baptistry, Duomo (Dome) and museum, so overall good value too.

At 420ish steps to the top, we found this a tough climb on a hot, summer day. The stairs are tight and busy too. The views from the various stages on the way up though are great. I loved the close-up views of the Basilica and the panoramic view of the rooftops of Florence.

Don't get me wrong, this does offer an amazing view of the city. However, if you happen to be traveling in the summer like most people, the line for The tower maybe very long and you may only have a short time in Florence. There is so much to see in Florence, I would hate to imagine you waiting in line all day. The same goes for climbing the dome of Santa Maria Del Fiore. If you have to choose between one of the or the other, definitely go for the dome. As I mentioned there are many other places in and around Florence to get a fabulous view. The best of which is in Piazzale Michelangelo. This is a short walk across the Arno and up to the Piazza. The Piazza is free to enter and offers breathtaking views, especially at sunset. From there, you can also head up to San Miniato al Monte. This church above Piazzalle Michelangelo also allows for amazing views.

If you are in Florence for one or two weeks, then I would definitely scheduled the tower into your sites. Florence is amazing in that everything is so close together, it is possible to see it all. But if you're there for two days with too many tourists, you do have to narrow it down.

You really need to get there for opening time to avoid the hoards,so you can appreciate the view of fabulous Florence. It also makes it easier to ascend and descend before the Chinese tour parties proceed 50 strong at a time without giving way,I kid you not! The entrance fee also allows you to visit several other builings in th Duomo group.

We climbed this instead of queuing for the Duomo's Cuppola - queue would have taken hours, and here a mere 10 min wait. It's a glorious climb with superb views from the top. We never managed to get to climb the Cuppola as I wasn't prepared to stay in line for so long ( plus the children couldn't get up early enough...) but this was a magnificent alternative.
