“Lovely hotel, more than a 2 star!”
Reviewed 15 January 2011

We booked 4 nights at Orcagna, after reading reviews here on Tripadvisor. We booked room 51 with private terrace and sitting on the terrace looking at the Duomo was the best part of the stay. The view was amazing! The hotel staff were very helpful, gave us maps and information on our arrival. Room was clean and spacious. The breakfast could have been better. They only had cereals, croissants, bread, cheese and coffee (but it is a 2 star hotel after all so it was ok). Make sure to order a cappuchino or espresso from the waiter! We didn't realize they had that the first days (they made them in the kitchen). Much better than the american coffee on the table!

It is a 15-20 minute walk to the Duomo, along a shopping street. If you need a supermarket or pharmacy, you have it just around the corner.

It didn't feel like a 2 star hotel at all! I will definitely stay at Orcagna when I return!

P.S Dont miss the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo (take a taxi from the hotel, not expensive at all), AMAZING view over the entire city!

After reading many positive reviews in travel forums like tripadvisor, me and my family booked two double rooms at Orcagna. It was a confirmed booking. But on arrival, the receptionist told that the hotel has been overbooked and they will provide us accommodation at the hotel opposite to Hotel Orcagna (without giving us any alternate options!!). The receptionist (who was so friendly and charming in her talks!!) told that it's sort of a free upgrade as the other one is a three star hotel and also said that it belonged to their own group. We were having no option than to check in to that hotel as Orcagna is a bit far from the train station by bus. (NB: For those intending to travel to this hotel by bus from the train station, we must give a friendly warning. Unless you know Italian and unless you are in the company of good Italians in the bus, which we fortunately had, it might be really difficult to find the bus stop where you should get down during night, as the buses there generally doesn't display the name of the bus stop, but only destination name!! It is also about 15 minutes bus ride from the station)

Making people check-in to another hotel after providing a confirmed booking is a totally unprofessional approach and so I would really recommend those booking at this hotel to reconfirm their booking by telephone/ email so that they will be checked in to the hotel they booked. The hotel to which they shifted us was having really small rooms and it was hardly of 2 star quality, though the receptionist had told us that it was a 3 star hotel. From outside itself, one could easily recogonise that it is a hotel that badly needs a renovation!! So be careful during the booking and check-in process at Orcagna.

Well located (10-15 min pleasant walk form center), residential and very quiet neighborhood.
Small, warm and very welcoming hotel with large clean rooms with balconies, large bathrooms and all necessary accomodations. Parking garage alhough for additional fees but it's still there and helps if you travel with car. Even elevator, small but still very useful especially for baggage. Overall, excellent experience especialy for the money

Orcagna is quite a walk from the train station, but you can take a C2 piccolo bus to get you as close as Biccaria and it's a 5-10 minute walk beyond that to the hotel. Nearby #14 buses can also get you close to city center. Florence is a walking city, so most locals will give you distances and directions in terms of walking time. Receptionists were very friendly and helpful. Free wifi is a nice plus. Hotel is older and the decor and rooms are dated, but it was not an issue for us. Breakfast was the typical croissant and juice service found at most other budget hotels in Italy.

It pains me to give a low rating to a hotel with such great service, but the hotel itself is badly in need of some repairs.

We chose Orcagna as there were five us of traveling and needed one room to have space for three, and the Orcagna had decent ratings on Tripadvisor. The room for three seemed slightly better than my room, but alas, I will only comment on my particular room.

We were greeted at check in by a very friendly reception team that clearly were happy to advise us on places to go and places to eat. We took them up on their recommendation for dinner at a off-the-tourist-route restaurant where we ate nice home made food with other patrons who appeared to be locals rather than tourists - a definite nice touch.

The Orcagna was fairly clean, but the furnishings and beds were dated and tired. The room was awkwardly laid out, so that it seemed we were constantly squeezing between the wall and the bed or furniture. On the other hand, the room for three was much more spacious . There was a small patio, but we didn't go out as the strange metal shutter-like door was broken and half of it kept slamming down as soon as it was opened. One of the door handles in the room was also broken, but my big complaint is the shower. On the first morning I was able to get a trickle of cold water, but on the second day I couldn't even get a drip of water out of the shower.

The Orcagna's located about a 15-20 minute walk from the Duomo and there are a few restaurants nearby to eat at. Wireless was available for free in the hotel, and there was also a public computer in the lobby to use. Breakfast was basic, with no meats or cheeses. Our group had a rental car, which was parked in a secure lot down the block for a daily fee.

Good Points
Very friendly and extremely helpful staff.
Free internet access. Speed of PC web site access is very good.
Large double bed that is very comfortable.
New/firm bed mattresses.
Tiled and very clean bathrooms.
Shower over bath in ‘Classic’ bedrooms; shower tray in ‘Economy’ double bedrooms.
Plenty of white, new and good quality towels.
Double room ‘Classic’ are spacious.
15 minute walk to the City centre.
No 14 bus runs frequently to the train/bus station area with the stop 100 metres from the hotel. (Purchase tickets from tabbachic for €1.40 per person - cheaper than buying on the bus.)
Area around the hotel is safe and quiet with a number of high quality shops close by.
A number of very good restaurants are within a 5 to 10 minute walk.
Air conditioning is very effective and unlimited in each bedroom.
Fully stocked mini bar is available in each bedroom and reasonably priced.
Breakfast is basic but adequate (choice of 2 cereals, croissants, bread/jams, orange juice & water, choice of yoghurts and freshly made tea/coffee) but no fresh fruit as shown on the hotel’s brochure.

Bad points

A number of rooms are rather small - UK sized double beds and space for one medium suitcase.
TV in each room is an old 12 inch tube version.
Some noise from other guests as bedroom doors and internal walls are very thin.
The free PC only runs IE6 with no Adobe software which makes a number of web sites unusable.
The very small lift is located on the interim landing (up 12 stairs).
There is no roof terrace whilst the outside covered area is basic (nothing like the web site photo).
Bedrooms need redecorating.

We stayed for 2 nights, the hotel is ok, the room was big, the staff friendly, in a good area but a bit far from the city centre, 10 min by bus, the stops 2 mins walking from the hotel.
The breakfast needs to be improved.
