This was a great option for us, as it was near the very center of town, in close and convenient walking distance to all of the sites we wanted to see. The rooms were a bit small, but it helped that they had vaulted ceilings. They were charming though, and each were decorated after a famous Renaissance artist, which we thought was neat. We were lucky enough to get the "Raffaello" room, so we had our own shower and also a great view of the city from our window. Junko, our host, was also very friendly and helpful. The only complaint is the smell of the hotel smells a bit musty. Probably not good for those with allergies, particularly to smoke. But we found our stay at Hotel Abaco to be a pleasant experience and would stay there again!!

The New Haven, CT response on the bug bites, I lived in Italy for over 8 years and lived quite close to the center of town. The mosquitos used to eat me up. Thing is unlike in the Caribean you never feel or see them biting you, they just leave their mark and you do not realize it until much later. The mosquitos nest on the Arno's (the rivers) that are surrounding all of the Florence center.

This hotel is hidden on the corner of one of the most central roads in the old city of Florence. The owner Bruno is a wonderful person and was always there to help us with whatever we needed. inside the hotel it has a very comfortable and welcoming feel. The rooms are very nicely decorated and the bathrooms although small are very clean. All of them have themes which coincide with the decorations and the flooring etc. We had a room overlooking the street that had great light and ventilation through a large window. The attendant at the desk was also very helpful and spoke very good english. I couldn't have asked for a more quaint and comfortable experience in Florence and would definitely recommend this hotel.

This hotel has a lot going for it. The price is low. The location is superb, close to the train station and situated so you can walk to everything - Duomo, Uffizi, Accademia, restaurants, plus lots of shopping. Of course, if you can afford to shop in the stores that were around the hotel (every famous Italian designer you can think of - Armani, Versace, Prada, Pucci etc), you would be staying somewhere much nicer than the Abaco... The stairwell to get to the hotel was shabby, but so what... Our room was clean, relatively spacious, and had high, beamed ceilings. It was decorated in a rococo style that was rather fun, even though it's not something I'd want to live with every day. Florence is extremely noisy, and the streets around the hotel are no exception, but the double-paned windows cut the noise to an astonishing degree. The air conditioner worked well. I liked almost everything about this hotel, except for the bathroom, which was so awful that it moved the hotel from a 4-dot experience to a 2 in my book. The bathroom was tiny, no big deal. The shower was just a curtained-off corner, and yes, as somebody else has mentioned, the cheap plastic shower curtain was held up with a string. Again, no big deal. What WAS a big deal was the there were signs all over the bathroom instructing you in several languages not to flush your toilet paper. Wait, the city that brought us the Renaissance can't even get their toilets to work properly? Awful. There was a shared toilet in the hall that didn't have all the signage, but anyway, that issue pretty nearly ruined the place for me. Too bad, because it was great otherwise.

Hotel Abaco has seen better days and is overpriced for the cramped, dingy surroundings reached by walking up three flights of unlit stairs (even at night).

The bathroom had a bad odor and meager facilities in a space the size of a tiny closet. The shower sprays on the floor shared with the WC and sink, the curtain of thin, old plastic and shower bar held to the ceiling by a string. Instead of the multi choice breakfast available in most places of this quality, it consisted of coffee with powdered milk, packaged toast and cookies, and brown and serve rolls.

For the price of 90 euros there are many other 2 star hotels in Florence to choose from.

Hotel Abaco was tolerable except for the pillows. We are not picky people and have stayed at many small hotels in the past, but the pillows at hotel abaco made sleeping extremely difficult. It felt as though the pillows were some sort of very lumpy bean bag. Everything else was okay, but we wouldn't stay there again.
