“Arno River”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2013

In our hop on/hop off bus, we passed along the road beside the River Arno with it's rapid waters make it non navigational river with a bit of waterfall. It is always refreshing to have a lake or river within the city limits.

“Eternally Beautiful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2013

The Arno flows through the city of Florence just as it has for centuries and the light dancing on the placid water is just the same as seen by some of the finest artists the world has ever known. The river has scenic walkways on each side where visitors can see sunrise or sunset. There is no bad time to view this splendid river.

I love this river and its bridges, particularly the Ponte Vecchio, the only remaining bridge from the Renaissance. Built in 1345 by Taddeo Gaddi, a student of Giotto's, the bridge originally housed blacksmiths and butchers. Today, its shops are filled with gold jewelry glittering in the windows. If you look carefully, you'll see along the top is the Varsari Corridor which runs from the Pitti Palace to the Uffizi and allowed the Medici to walk into the city without mixing with the people of Florence.

All of the other ancient bridges in Florence fell victim to World War II, but legend has it that the German officer who spared the bridge had a sentimental attachment to it...this is a good thing for all of us, for the bridge is iconic. When walking near the bridge, look for masses of locks that lovers have placed there before throwing the key into the river symbolizing their undying love for each other.

“Good idea for romantic walk”

Florence wouldn't be so beautiful city if not Arno river. It is good idea for the walk and you can stop at charming bridges including Ponte Vecchio.

“It´s magical”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2012

Without the river Florence would only be half the city that it is. On the one hand it divides the North of the city from the South. On the other hand it somehow seems to be the lifeblood that connects the city together, reflecting the old churches and steeples on the river banks with the beautiful old bridges that span the river providing a passage way across.
On the river bank near Via Niccolo where I am staying there is a rather large grassy wilderness, and also some sand where locals can be seen sun baking and walking their dogs. In the evenings the promenade along the river is beautifully lit with antique lamps. It´s nice to walk along the river on a summers evening and take in the reflections of the bridges and the city lights.

“Amazing Sunset View”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2012

The hotel we stayed was by the river and we couldn't have enough of the wonderful view. It's especially amazing during sunset hours. We saw bike riders stopped and took out their camera to capture the magic moment. A picture tells more than a thousand word, uploaded one for reference (it's just taken with an iPhone, should be way better if it was taken with a professional camera)
