I think this place should do everyone a favor and invest in some comfy mattresses; that would have changed my perspective on the entire experience. Yes, the decor needs updating, but the real gripe is just the mattress misery. The service was, as other reviewers have stated, great -- except for one notably sour evening clerk.
The location is indeed perfect, and the terrace is possibly the most beautiful view in Florence. In fact, if you're not an architecture buff, there's no need to wait in line at the Duomo to climb to the top when you're a guest here. The view from Antica Torre is just as good and line-free.
Overall, I think it's important to highlight a fact that many Americans misunderstand. In the U.S., four-star means extremely nice. In Europe, not so much. If you want a sparkly clean hotel with great facilities, you have to go five-star. The price difference between four and five stars is substantial, so you'll have to make your decisions accordingly. This hotel is definitely NOT luxurious by some standards, but in comparison to many other European four stars, especially those in Florence, it is. That said, I would probably look into more comfortable digs on my next trip.More
