This was a slightly quirky boutique hotel, but in a very nice way. We were very pleased to have trusted the reviews. Our room (502) was large and well appointed with dual aspect windows from which there were stunning views of Florence. We had our own little terrace too. The views were only surpassed by those from the rooftop terrace bar. They were literally jaw-dropping.
The staff were without exception very friendly and informative.
There may well be better rooms, but that is difficult to imagine. We hope to return at some point to this hotel and this delightful city.

Our family of 5 adults stayed at the Antica Torre di Via Tornabuoni for three nights in early January. We cannot wait to return. The stay was the highlight of our 10-day trip through London, Rome, and Florence. Our two rooms were beautiful and comfortable, the location excellent and the views amazing, the breakfasts were delicious, and the staff was welcoming, kind, and attentive.
The main building is from the 13th or 14th century but we stayed in the newer section (seamlessly added on) with two rooms joined by an outer foyer, which was perfect for us. Our room for three adults was so well-arranged that someone clearly put thought in to the needs of three adults in a hotel room. The room had a king bed and a large twin in a separate, private alcove, and a surprise second bathroom. Much better than the cot stuck in a room as we had at the Intercontinental in London, for nearly the same price. Both our rooms were spacious with high ceilings and beautiful marble bathrooms but felt warm and cozy in the rainy winter weather.
Prior to arrival the staff assisted us with airport transfers and logistics advice and continued to help by recommending restaurants and shopping favorites. Our party included persons with special dietary needs and the staff knew exactly where to recommend.
There is no onsite restaurant but they do serve an excellent hot and cold breakfast buffet and provide lite fare from the terrace bar. On our departure day, our taxi left before breakfast (which was our only disappointment! Start breakfast earlier!?!) but the staff left breakfast trays in our room the night before.
The location is perfect, right along the Arno River and just 1-2 blocks from the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and shopping area, but easy walking to everything you might want to visit. If you do not have a lot of luggage you can walk to the train station. The rooftop outdoor terrace has 360 views of Florence that are breathtaking, even on a rainy foggy evening.
We were disappointed we did not have more time to linger at the hotel. Truly our party’s only complaints were an 8:00m start time for breakfast and slow internet, but both typical for Europe.
We will only stay at the Antica when in Florence.

Room Tip: Rooms that face the street or river were quiet at night and worth the view. Adjoining rooms on 5th f...

I booked this hotel for my fiancée and me for four nights from November 2, 2013 to November 5, 2013 (at an average of $273 USD per night) through Expedia.com. The hotel is in a 13th century building, right on the Arno River. The hotel knew we were there to celebrate our engagement (the night before) and upgraded us to a beautiful suite on the fourth floor with a view of the river and the plaza. The hotel is on the Florentine counterpart to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, with the Zegna store next door and Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc. all within easy walking distance. Indeed, all of the sites in Florence are within walking distance from the hotel.

Breakfast on the rooftop was included every morning and drinks were available there anytime.

The staff was friendly and spoke English well. The restaurant recommendations were very good even though I will take Italian-American food over Italian food any day.

This is a very nice hotel and, if I return to Italy, I am going to make it a point to get out of Rome as fast as I can, and get to Florence and this hotel.

We came to Europe for 3 weeks and this was by far one of the nicest places we stayed. The location couldn't be better. The staff was very friendly and the rooms were clean. The best part was our patio that had an amazing view of the Duomo. It also had the best breakfast of anywhere that we stayed.

Room Tip: Definitely book a room with a balcony and patio.. I believe our room number was 503.

We really enjoyed our stay here. We came here for our honeymoon and were welcomed to the room by a bottle of fizz and a card saying congratulations which was very nice of them. (I think our room may have been upgraded as well although with the different room descriptions I'm not 100% sure!) The staff were all lovely and polite. The welcome was very good - one of the reception staff, Anna Luisa, showed us the room personally and then showed us all the hotel amenities (the terrace, breakfast room, bar etc) and explained how everything worked and was very helpful and friendly. The serving staff at breakfast were also very friendly and the waitress actually remembered what we had ordered on the first day when we saw her a couple of days later! The other reception staff were also very friendly and let us print out a booking voucher on their computer when we went to the opera. The room was very clean. The hotel also offers a turndown service unless you hang the 'do not disturb' sign outside. The honesty bar is a great idea and the fact that tea and coffee were free was great. We bought a bottle of wine for the room one night and were given some bar snacks to take as well. The location was brilliant - within easy walking distance of all the main sights. Breakfast was also good. The only thing I would say is that we could hear other guests closing doors, coming and going etc - not really the hotel's fault and probably due to building design as it is an old building, but it did disturb us a bit, although not so much that we wouldn't come back - we enjoyed everything else and would be happy to stay here again.

We booked the standard room for six nights. Our room was cozy and the bathroom bigger and nicer than we expected. The front desk people were inceredably helpful with restaurant ideas and reservations. We never saw the cleaning staff but the room was magically cleaned and turned down at morning and night. Breakfast every momning was delicous. The hotel itself is perfectly situated on the river in walking distance to everthing. And the view. I would live on those rooftop terraces. We look forward to going back to Florence and wouldn't dare stay anywhere else.

Stayed 4 nights in December, during Christmas. Gorgeous historic hotel. Our room was huge and tastefully decorated, and our windows had an amazing view of the Duomo. Beautiful (and spotless) marble bathroom, fluffy towels, comfortable king-size bed, decent-size flatscreen TV--what more can you ask for?

The service was great, except that when we asked for a recommendation for a "casual" dinner, one of the staff tried to make us a reservation at a restaurant that is roughly 100 euros/person, not exactly our idea of "casual." The hotel has a DVD/blu-ray library if you want to watch a movie in your room. We loved the free coffee/tea provided throughout the day. The included breakfast was the best we had during our time in Europe: pastries, fresh fruit, meats, cheeses, yogurt, eggs, etc.

Safe, convenient location not far from the Duomo, in the high-end shopping district. The terrace and room views are incredible. Highly recommend this hotel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We personally enjoy welcoming our guests, we wish to reinvent the concept of hospitality, and we have the inspiration to provide the warmth of home in every detail. This is how the Antica Torre di Via Tornabuoni 1, Florence came to be: a tower-house built in the mid-12th century by the Guelph family of Ruggerini. At the beginning of the 20th century, this palace became "Pensione Piccioli," and quickly turned into a privileged residence for aristocrats and English writers. Closed after the Great War, Pensione Piccioli reopened in 2001, as a Period Residence called "Antica Torre di Via Tornabuoni 1." Thanks to attentive restoration to preserve all its original charm, the evocative ambiance of the Palace on Via Tornabuoni has regained life and warmth. This magnificent complex is considered one of the typical "tower-houses" of Mediaeval Florence, and, to this day, it still preserves all its characteristic architectural elements: it is an admirable example of the human ability to convert buildings built for war into oases of peace, culture and hospitality. In this ancient tower, we have created a world of harmony, privacy, and attentiveness to our guests' needs. Luxury, peace, and beauty are all in traditional Italian style, and give the concept of comfort new aesthetics. Almost all rooms enjoy an enchanting view of the city or the Arno River, and all are furnished with the highest in comfort: satellite plasma TVs, DVD players, wireless internet connection, direct line telephone, minibar, electronic safe, air conditioning and heating, private marble bath with tub and/or shower, hair dryer, slippers and shoehorns. Some of the Rooms and Suites are decorated with a Renaissance flair: with frescoes, drapes in coloured precious fabrics, bathrooms in red Alcantara or Gold Calacatta marble, and romantic four poster beds. ... more   less
