Having visited Florence last year for a day trip as part of a Mediterranean cruise with our two teenage children, my wife and I were determined to return to the City this year. We booked a long weekend staying at the Hotel Degli Orafi based on the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor.

To say that the hotel exceeded our expectations would be an understatement.

The hotel’s location simply cannot be beaten, sitting between the Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery and overlooking the Arno. The hotel’s Reception staff were very welcoming and our bags were quickly delivered to our room – and what a room it was! Our fourth floor room was next door to the famous ‘Room with a View’ and naturally we shared the same amazing vista of the river and the Ponte Vecchio. The room was very comfortable and the efficient air-conditioning essential. We saw remarks about ‘hard’ mattresses in other reviews – all I can say is that we found the bed to be firm but very comfortable.

There are all sorts of little touches which make a big difference; free wi-fi (for a single device); weather-forecast cards left daily (sunny – of course!); free water in the mini-bar fridge – essential given the heat. The welcome drink was a nice gesture. The 5th floor bar and terrace is a wonderful location, but when we came for our drink (non-alcoholic only) on the first evening, the waiters looked rather bored and the small canapés which accompanied the drink were the same ones that we had seen sitting on the bar counter earlier in the afternoon - a pity, but not really a big issue.

The Reception staff were very helpful throughout our stay, assisting with booking restaurants and a day-trip to the city of Siena and the nearby Tuscan towns of Monteriggioni and San Gimignano combining sight-seeing and wine-tasting.

All of the public areas in the hotel are in keeping with the hotel’s slightly informal ambience, helping make one feel relaxed and ‘at-home’. The breakfast room in the hotel is as splendid as it looks in the photos and the breakfast is excellent.

If you are visiting Florence, looking for a great hotel, comfortable, with welcoming, friendly and helpful staff in a superb location – look no further.

The hotel staff simply made me and my wife feel a part of the family! The hotel is beautiful and in a marvelous location for access to all of Firenze. We checked in through a normal process swiftly and were taken to our room by the porter. While we were admiring the decor, there was a knock on the door. To my amazement, a waiter brought in a tray with snacks and a bottle of champagne with a Happy Birthday card! The receptionist had noticed that it was my birthday from my passport!!!

This hotel was definitely a great find. It is a small hotel that is perfectly located next to the river, the Ponte Veccio and the Uffizzi. The room was large, very well appointed and with a fantastic view of the river. The bathroom was huge. The staff were all very helpful and eager to help in any way possible. They have a great breakfast buffet and a lovely restaurant with beautiful views. The attention to detail is impressive, from gift t-shirts upon our arrival, to little cards with next day's weather on the bed every night, to "good morning" notes on the breakfast table. This is a hotel I highly recommend without hesitation. Only one con: I found the beds to be a bit on the hard side.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the river and the Ponte Veccio.

Right from the initial e-mail enquiry about room types and reservation dates we knew that the Hotel degli Orafi was going to be something special. The reply was prompt and very helpful and was a good indication that the hotel team, management and staff, always strives to go the extra mile to provide the very best service and a memorable experience for hotel guests. The location is so central that the major sites are no more then twenty minues walk away and most of them are virtually on the doorstep. Despite being so central, there is no problem with street noise. We had a Junior Suite with the bed on a gallery above the sitting/relaxing area, large wardrobe, plenty of space to store luggage and huge bathroom. The bed was wonderfully firm and ultra-comfortable: perfect for recovering after a day spent sightseeing and ideal if you have a slightly dodgy back after all that walking! The bathroom had a large, powerful walk-in shower (no bath, but that didn't matter) and the water was hot at any time of the day. It's almost worth staying at the degli Orafi just for the breakfast! The breakfast room is the old ballroom and still has its wonderful frescoed ceiling and luxurious filltings. You could be having breakfast in a palazzo! The choice of food is very wide-ranging and all of it is delicious, with probably the best bacon and scrambled egg that I have come across outside the UK. Then you have the rooftop bar: we had a free soft drink from the bar when we arrived, which was very welcome after our journey, and we repaired to the bar every evening for an aperitif (the cocktails are superb) before going out for dinner and then again for a limoncello diestif when we returned. Sitting on the terrace, looking out over the Florence rooftops in the warm night air, serenaded by the musicians on the riverbank below and gazing at the floodlit Duomo - what could be better. The staff in the reataurant and the bar must also be given a special mention: high quality service, polite, efficient and all speaking impeccable English. I mentioned that the hotel feels like a palazzo: we felt as though we were treated like royalty! The reception staff, too, could not have been more helpful. They recommended to us some truly excellent restaurants serving proper Tuscan food and not crowded with tourists. The hotel made dinner reservations for us at which ever restaurant we chose every evening. I shoudl also add that the hotel does not get any 'incentives' from any of the restaurants that they recommend.
How many more superlatives can I add? You can get free wifi for your room if you ask for the passcode at Reception; there is a small library with books that you can freely borrow or where you can just sit quietly to read or use the hotel's PC; there is also an elegant sitting room where you can again relax on a comfortable sofa in peace and quiet. I could go on and on.. In short, highly reccomended, great value for money and we would return without a moment's hesitation.

Room Tip: Opt for a suite, if you can afford the higher price. But the standard rooms are really nice as well...

Our second stay at the Hotel Degli Orafi was again special, as expected. The location of this boutique style hotel on the Arno River is perfect and our friends who visited for the first time were pleased by the choice. The welcoming staff were professional, informative and personable. The breakfast was delicious and the serving staff very accomodating. The hotel is an easy walk to many great restaurants and 'must see' as well as 'off the beaten path' sites. We had an upgraded spacious room/suite on the 3rd floor with a partial view of the Arno and Ponte Vecchio. We enjoyed gathering at the rooftop bar before and after dinner and talking with other hotel guests.. Our last visit was in April several years ago, and although on this stay we missed the bartender Massimo, we did get to spend more time on the lovely outdoor terrace, overlooking the Duomo, during this July stay.
