I dream of living at Relais Cavalcanti.
Perfectly situated in the heart of historic Florence, Relais Cavalcanti is an independent traveler's dream. You can feel as though you actually live in Florence, but it's even better since housekeeping and the owners keep your room and the common areas spotlessly clean, linens and towels fresh, and the kitchen well stocked with goodies. And if you want to keep your own goodies, this is no problem as your room is equipped with a mini refrigerator; ours was cleverly hidden in the desk with a complimentary bottle of water and soda.
On this most recent five-night visit, we were in the Botticelli room, a superior double room with two sound-dampening windows overlooking the Mercato del Porcellino (and its famous wild boar statue) and a smaller window in the bathroom overlooking the side passageway toward the library. The room was very quiet; most of the inner walls are solid, so we never heard other guests in their rooms and because of the double window panes, we never heard noise from the bustling market below. The only noise was the occasional sound of an interior door closing, which we heard through our own door to the hallway.
I have stayed at Relais Cavalcanti many times over the years and I return again and again because of the charming facilities and owners. Anna and Francesca maintain Relais Cavalcanti lovingly and if there are problems they are dealt with promptly. After our first night, I let them know that our shower wasn't draining well and it was promptly fixed. For this, I emailed them in the event I was unable to see them during their morning office hours, as it is not staffed 24-hours a day.
Despite the lack of 24-hour staffing, we feel very safe there because of the limited access to the building itself, to Relais Cavalcanti, and of course, to your own room. Relais Cavalcanti's 10 rooms occupy the third floor of a five-floor historic building where others (locals) live. The building's entrance is non-descript (remember, you get to pretend as though you live in Florence) and it requires a key to enter, which you are provided after check-in.
The building also has a small retro-fitted elevator; however, there is a steep set of stairs to climb from the entrance in order to reach it, so please review the photos to ensure that you are capable of climbing the stairs, with or without luggage.
Lastly, while it is categorized as a bed & breakfast, breakfast is not served and this message is adequately reinforced in booking confirmations. The aforementioned stocked goodies -- which include cereal, pastries, fruit, cookies and cakes, as well as tea, coffee and juice -- are available at any time in the kitchen. There is also a microwave that can be used for these foods and beverages or for leftovers that you've stored in your room's mini fridge.
