First of all, this place is unfriendly. We checked in late in the evening, and the staff member working the desk asked us to leave our passports there while he showed us to our room (no one else was watching the desk). When we politely indicated that we would like to stay with our passports, and that we will be happy to wait while he enters our information, we were met with a bit of rudeness and attitude. Not pleasant.

The room was okay. The cover of the bed was visibly dirty. The toilet had some issues with flushing.

"Breakfast". Pretty bad. Twice, I had dirty utensils given to me, with visible particles of food on them. The choices are mostly cheap breads, cheap ham (very processed and not very fresh-tasting), and some packaged triangles of "cheese". No eggs, not even hard-boiled. They had yogurt but it wasn't very fresh.

Also, they advertise an elevator in the hotel. It only goes from the ground floor to the first floor (check-in desk). If your room is upstairs, you have to carry your things up a fairly large set of slippery marble steps.

The location is okay. Close to Santa Maria Novella station which made it easy to leave this place quickly.

Gentile Ospite,

The hotel is located at the 1st floor. We were shocked to find that as we enter the building, it was very dim. The lights were not switched on. Was told by the receptionist that we have to press a button as you enter to switch on the lights ! The hotel lift on the right was not very visible. The 1st thing you would see as you enter the building is a short flight of stairs & we had to drag our luggage up 2 flights of stairs. The hotel/rooms look dated, guess can't expect much for a 3-star hotel. But then again, it could be better. The breakfast was basic, nothing to shout about. Had much better breakfast in a 3-star hotel. Other than the location being close to the train station, there's nothing spectacular about this hotel. Am sure you can find better ones elsewhere. In any case, Florence is a walking city. Being close to the train station is nice to have. Catching a taxi & paying Euro10 to get to anywhere within Florence city is no problem at all, if needed. Otherwise, it's pretty much within walking distance to most places.

Gentile Ospite,

I normally stay at the Desiree, because of it's location (within easy walk of train). They changed a reservation for me last minute because of plane delays and put us in the Domus. Pretty location in the piazza and some nice off the beaten track eateries over on that side of the road. But the hotel was elegant, furnished beautiful, gorgeous ceilings, comfy furniture and beautiful balcony of the breakfast room. The rooms was big, with lovely brocade curtains and spreads. Elevator available to the second floor hotel entrance. You couldn't ask for more for the reasonable price.

When first checking into this hotel, the staff was bit abrupt.

Also, noise tended to be a problem. The hotel or whatever is below it, was under construction during our stay and we would hear construction noise starting at 5:30 AM. The hotel abutts the Piazza Santa Maria Novella. While we were there, there was Gellato festial on the Piazza, in addition to street musicians. The noise from the street kept me awake until midnight.

We also had serious plumbing problems in that our shower did not drain, and started to flood the bathroom so we had to stop showering for a bit. Staff did repair the drain after informed of the problem.

Perhaps my experience was a one time thing related to construction, and perhaps if you get a room on the opposite side of the hotel from the Piazza it will be quieter. However, my recommendation would be to look for another hotel a couple of blocks away from the Piazza that might be quieter.

Highly recommend this quaint old hotel right on Piazza Santa Maria Novella. Staff couldn't be more helpful. It is like stepping into the 15th century and puts you in the mood for Florence. It is only three star, but rooms good and breakfast adequate. Great coffee. Check out the ornate ceilings, unbelievable.

We arrived by train from Rome and went straight to the tourist info office across the road for accom they had this hotel for offer, we took it sight unseen, the price was good and we felt we were very lucky, to get this hotel, we worried as it was only 3 star but it was fantastic several minutes from train station which is what we asked for as the bus tours also went from there which made everything just so easy. the staff were wonderful and very accomodating especially when we needed an early breakfast one day before our tour which they booked for us also, the room was spacious and the shower pressure was sooooo good. It could get a little noisy at night with the night sellers under the window however if you closed it no problems I actually enjoyed the atmosphere and went to sleep listening to it. Breakfast room was just lovely very relaxing and on the one day the weather was good sat on the balcony outside, breakfast was just very nice with the add of cereal that a lot of the accom we experienced in Italy lacked. There was a lift to the first floor which was great when you needed it and no stairs once inside. This Hotel deserves way more than a 3 star rating, Location, service, ambience, value for money,, great place to stay I would totally recommend it.

We chose the wettest week possible - but no problems because at this well situated hotel
we were close to everything you need to see.
Clean, well appointed, (good powerful shower) and room properly tidied everyday.
Charming polite staff who dealt well with the hoards from the east who were prevelant in every nook and cranny.
So - a definite recommendation all round.

Room Tip: Don't be so petty about rooms - some have better views than others!
