“Delightful well situated hotel”
Reviewed 12 August 2011

The hotel was well situated ovelooking the Piazza Santa Maria Novella. The room allocated was a superior room on the first floor overlooking the Piazza. The room was quiet and pleasant. The hotel is well located approximately 5 to 10 minutes from the train station. When leaving the station walk through the taxi rank and down the side of the church and you will find the hotel directly in front of you with the Piazza on the right hand side. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The hotel staff were friendly and efficient. We emailed the hotel and requested that they book a visit to the Accademia and other attractions. This was done efficiently and enabled us to avoid large queues. Breakfast was fresh with a reasonable variety of food to suit all tastes. A charming hotel and definately a nice place to stay.

Easy walk from the train station...just make sure you have a walking map when arriving...the hotel sign is quite small. Knowing we had booked a basic room, we weren't expecting much and were pleasantly surprised by the size of our room and the view of the square and cathedral. Wifi connections were a problem in our room, but no problem in the lobby. Great location...we walked everywhere to and from here. We would be happy to stay here again!

My son and his wife honeymooned in Florence last month and I had made all the arrangements in advance. The hotel staff was incredibly helpful to me with the booking and room selection and everything went smoothly. The couple LOVED the hotel and were thrilled that their room looked out onto the facade of the Cathedral. I can't say enough good things about the whole experience!

We stayed at the HSMN for 7 nights in the middle of our two-week Italian honeymoon and it was truly lovely. They upgraded us to the honeymoon suite which has a private terrace overlooking the piazza and is bigger than apartments I've lived in. The staff was helpful for getting reservations and printing out our online tickets. The breakfast is really good and their staff is very attentive. They are in a great location from the train station and you will soon learn that nothing is far in Florence, but it is close to some of the main attractions. If you can get over the fact that it is a little like a Harry Potter scene trying to find your room then you will enjoy your stay. There is free wi-fi that worked fairly well. Highly recommended. Best place we stayed in Italy.

This hotel is surprisingly close to the train station. Do not be fooled like we were into taking a taxi.
This was our favorite hotel on our 3 city trip to Italy.
The first room we were given smelled bad and it seemed to get worse with time. When I complained, we were quickly offered another room and the problem was solved.
The breakfast was very nice compared to the other cities we stayed in.
The bathroom was surprisingly large compared to others hotels as well.

Room Tip: Do not hesitate to complain if you are not happy.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Santa Maria Novella Hotel in a 'suite with a view'.

Reaching the hotel via a car:-
The hotel's website does not indicate how difficult it is to reach the hotel in a car. If you intend to drive to Florence, you may wish to consider choosing a hotel outside of the inner pedestrian zone of the city. There is no helpful information from the hotel on the best route to take (even if you email them to ask for it). The piazza where the hotel is located is only accessible to cars from one side. If you arrive on the other side, there is no way through. A map on the website or a .PDF document would be very helpful.

Decor:-
The decor of the hotel is elegant and spotless. There is a nice reception, lounge, breakfast room and bar on the ground floor. The suite was exceptionally nice and luxurious and the view of the church amazing.

Service:-
There was always staff available in the reception area, even if they were seated in the back office, rather than at the front desk. They were helpful and efficient.

Bar:-
There didn't appear to be any dedicated bar staff because every time we went into the bar, there was nobody there to serve us. There is no bell, phone or way of attracting attention in there either. Walking through to reception and asking for service worked.

Gym:-
The gym is well stocked with a number of machines. A good stock of towels, TVs and chilled water.

'Snacks available':-
The hotel does not have a restaurant for lunch or dinner. It does advertise a snack service available from 11am to 11pm. We tried to order a toasted ham and cheese sandwich around lunchtime and were advised it was not available. We were then told it would take at least an hour as there was nobody available to make the sandwiches. This is very poor, if you can't provide a service, don't advertise it.
We can recommend the restaurant at the hotel opposite (the Minerva), it's convenient for this hotel and the food and prices were excellent.

Roof terrace:-
The hotel has a roof terrace laid out with chairs, tables and sun umbrellas. This is a wonderful resource that is being under-utilized. There is no bar or snack service up there. We would have put a couple of hot tubs up there and a phone to call down for drinks! We went to one of the local mini markets, bought some very high quality ham and cheeses at bargain prices and had our own picnic up there.

Valet parking:-
The hotel staff will park and retrieve your car. Ours came back with a couple of minor scratches on there that I'm sure weren't there when we arrived.

Breakfast:-
The breakfast buffet was very good. Hot and cold savoury choices were available. Cake, sweet pastries, yogurt, cereals, fresh fruit salad. Juices, tea and coffee.

Lifts:-
There is a slightly strange lift system in the hotel; you might find you have to take two lifts to reach your room with five or six steps in between. If you are unable to walk up/down stairs, you may wish to speak with reservations when booking your room.

Location:-
The location of the hotel is good if you wish to be in the heart of the busy tourist centre, near the station close to a number of low cost restaurants, 10 - 15 minutes from the Uffizi and 5 minutes from the cathedral church (Duomo) of Florence. Next time we might choose to stay in the north central section of Florence as it was a little quieter, still convenient for the main sights and had access to nicer restaurants.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the piazza.

SMNovella, Responsabile reception at Santa Maria Novella Hotel, responded to this review, 9 August 2011
Dear Madame,
we thank you for your review regarding the Hotel Santa Maria Novella and we are glad to know that on the whole you had a comfortable and pleasant stay in our hotel. We are aware that it is not always easy to reach the city centre by car, unfortunately as majortraffic planning changes have been recently made in the heart of the city. We thank you for having informed us about the partial absence of the dedicated person in the bar during your stay , our manager has taken good note about your review. Concerning the snack bar service we are very sorry about the mistake in reporting the opening hours and we hope that the service that we provided in that occasion had been enjoyed. Regarding the car park service, we inform you that if you had informed the reception desk about the minor scratches found at your departure we would have contacted the company that provides us the garage service and would have tryed to solve it. Anyhow we thank you again for your comments, we'll do our best to improve our service , thank you for your suggestions as well. We remain with our Best Regards and hope to welcome you back .

We truly enjoyed our time staying here! It is very close to the train, which is convenient, as well as close to all the big sights you want to see while in Florence! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was delicious, the best we had in all of our Italian hotels. Actually had eggs which was a nice change from 10 days of cold continental breakfasts! The rooms were unique and cozy, with a decent-sized marble bathroom, as well as nice bath products. A little rooftop with tables is available, but it was so hot while we were there we ended up never taking advantage of it. Within walking distance of great restaurants, such as Il Latini, and some of the best gelato in Italy!
