“Excellent location and welcoming staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2011

The Santa Maria Novella 1 is centrally located in Florence. Initially we thought noise from the street may be a problem but not so. The welcome and check in was friendly and the room modern and tasteful. The location is close to the train station and within walking distance to many of the attractions of Florence.

This hotel was a wonderful little spot! Great prices, excellent service, nice clean rooms. We arrived in Florence late at night, around 10:00 pm- we rented a car at the airport, and with our gps thought we could easily find the hotel. After driving for about 90 minutes, we decided to call the hotel. Despite the language barrier, we were able to figure out how to get there. When we arrived, the hotel staff went with my husband to park the car - our bags were promptly brought to our very comfy room where there was a nice cold beer waiting in the fridge. It was a little warm in the room - we couldn't seem to get the airconditioner to work properly, but it cooled enough for it to be managable, and we had a great sleep before travelling to Certaldo the next day to get married.

It's about 7 mins walk away from the Central Station. The standard room that I had was very quaintly decorated and the FOC internet is a boon, though the wireless didn't quite work in our room. I like the seperate waiting room right beside the entrance and the 'reading room' deeper from the reception. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Parking is a hassle but then again, so is driving in Florence. It's EUR30/night if you want to park btw.

As I write this, it is my last night at this beautiful hotel. I'm a travel agent and I just want to say that it's deserving of all the wonderful reviews here. We took the train in from Venice and the hotel was just a quick 5 minutes walk from the Santa Maria Novella train station, located in a pretty piazza overlooking a church. There are no large signs advertising the hotel's location once you get to the piazza though, so we had to ask some of the shop keepers to get the exact location and it was not hard to find at all. In fact, it was right in front of us and there was a small brass plate with the hotel's name by the door as we got a little closer.

We have 2 connecting rooms for our family of 4 with 2 teens and it feels like a 2 bedroom suite. Both rooms and bathrooms are laid out a little differently yet still retaining the old world luxurious feel. It's bright and airy with voluminous curtains and wood floors. The pictures did this hotel no justice. There's an electric hot water kettle in the room with a free selection of tea. We have superior rooms so it over looks the piazza and has a view of the church. There are some musicians playing in the square so, when our windows were opened; we were treated to some lovely music wafting into our room.

The breakfast room is beautiful and serves up a delicious fare with eggs, bacon, cold cuts, fruit, cheese, pastries, cereal and yogurt. A good start to a busy day.

There is a small gym with a sauna-complimentary to guests and so is the WiFi which is an added bonus.

We got very good service from the front desk and were always met with a friendly staff..

The hotel is also surrounded by shops and restaurants, so it was convenient to pick up a bottle of water, beer and soda to take back to the room. It's also a quick walk down the street from good shopping and about a 15 mins stroll to Uffizi museum.

It feels safe and it's well lit around the hotel, so walking around later at night was not even a concern for us.

The beds are comfortable and not overly hard like some of the other European hotels that we were at.

We would come back to this property again in a heart beat and highly recommend this to anyone.

I stayed here for 4 days with my husband for our honeymoon. When we mentioned the word "honeymoon", we were immediately upgraded to a mini-suite with a gorgeous view of the Santa Maria Novella church and surrounding square.
The room was spacious, filled with light, and very pretty. The bathroom was very nice, with a huge marble bathtub. The staff was very nice and helpful- we booked two guided tours through them and it couldn't have been easier. The continental breakfast which is included was fabulous. The room they hold it in is gorgeous and the coffee is served with steaming hot, frothy milk, so good! There was quite a variety of food and most of it was good. We ate breakfast there daily.
The hotel is located in in a great area, just takes a few minutes to walk to the Duomo and it's steps away from the train station so it's easy for traveling. There is a fantastic gelato spot across the Santa Maria Novella Square, and also a really great restaurant just down a side street, on the left of the hotel (Trattoria al Trebbio).
I definitely recommend this hotel and I would absolutely stay here upon my next visit to Florence.

After reading the reviews I hoped it was as good as people had been writing - it really is.
Ideally situated - walking distance from station and 20 min taxi ride (20 Euros). We opted for a "room with a view" which overlooked the piazza - a square surrounded by other hotels and an old church - really good for people watching. This hotel is good for walking to all the sights including the other side of the river. Plenty of lovely places to eat nearby too.
Lovely clean room - very nice firm bed, breakfast was really good - cereal, yoghurts, fresh fruit, cake, croissants, meat and cheese etc as much as you want. The breakfast room has lovely decor and paintings - the whole hotel is decorated very nicely with them touching up warn bits whilst we were there ready for the new season. The staff were really polite - were there when you needed them, were in teh background if you didn't.
I'm not sure why the very very few negative comments have been written - I like good service and high standards and I got this - we would go back to thsi hotel again.
It had a gym and sauna we didn;t use but had a look - looked nice - and internet facilities and room service too

I can not say enough good things about this hotel. The front desk was ready for us when we arrived early, and was extremely helpful. The rooms were beautiful with a real old world charm with modern amenities. Location was only about 300 yards from the Duomo and a short walk to all other attraction. The hotel is located near the train station so we were a little aprehensive but the area turned out to be great ( irish pub next door happy hour 4 to 9 and 4 euro BIG beers)The breakfast room is delightful and the young ladies who served in the mornings spoke wonderful english and were there for anything you needed. Aslo the american coffee was great.
