“good hotel be willing to walk to center”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

Stayed for 1 week at the San Gallo. Rooms were nice, clean but small. The walk to center was 15 min so be willing to walk but for those active no problem but for first time Florence visitors I would suggest closer to center.
Few restaurants near by that were good and local.

Trying to choose a hotel in a foreign city can be a very daunting task and a gamble. We chose this hotel due to the excellent reviews on Tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. We spent 4 nights here and enjoyed everyone of them. The breakfasts were better than the usual Italian style with plenty to choose from and the room was very good. Pleased it had thick windows and air con though as the streets can be noisy with traffic.
The beds were a little hard for us but other than having to ask for a kettle and cups etc, nothing was a problem and dealt with efficiently with a smile.
The breakfast staff were really genuinely pleasant especially. What was a bonus to us was the young lady on reception who highlighted all the main attractions and places of interest for us on a map. That was service. Towels and pillow cases changed daily. Spot on. I really would recommend this hotel to you. It is a little away from the main area but only a 10 minute walk gets you there. There are a few restaurants and cafes nearby, but be aware of a bit of 'localism' about some of them. You are but passing trade. We did walk out of one cafe as we felt ignored. I detract. Good price, good hotel. Well done

Wonderful stay! Large breakfast to choose from, incld. The room was the perfect size for 2. However the location of our room we could hear other rooms showers and toilets running. Location? Thin walls? The beds were harder that at home, but softer than other hotels we stayed at. We ordered a tea pot for the room and extra pillows and they were delivered timely. Would definitely stay again! Paola and linda were a great help at the front desk. Linda walked us to our nearby massage appointment, so we wouldnt get lost.

We found the San Gallo Palace impossible to fault. Our room was large and well equipped, had a balcony (although no view) and had the luxury of a pillows "menu", offering a choice and a change from standard hotel offerings. Our request for a kettle was quickly met and all dealings we had with the reception staff were characterised by a pleasant and helpful manner. The breakfast was more than adequate, although the coffee was a bit fierce, and there were plenty of helpful staff manning the room. Everything was immaculately clean and all aspects of the hotel were finished to a high standard. The recommendations for dinner took us to a small restaurant about 200m away around the roundabout where we had the best meals of our stay. We found the distance from the centre to be helpful as it meant prices in cafes and bars were lower. The walk into the centre of the city is a pleasant way to start the day and on the day when we wanted to cross the river to the Pitti we took the bus from the stop round the corner and were able to save ourselves the walk. All was very convenient. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel. Thank you, San Gallo Palace, for a wonderful stay.

The San Gallo Palace is a wonderful Italian villa style hotel. Very traditional in its styling, but bordering on dated, it's a comfortable base for exploring this wonderful city.

The reception staff are simply first class. We had booked a deluxe room, however the air conditioning was not working when we arrived, and as our room was at the front of the hotel and had windows on three sides it was extremely hot. The reception staff immediately offered to move us, and upgraded us to a junior suite at the rear of the hotel which was a lot cooler. The rooms are spotlessly clean, and very comfortable with good quality furniture. Once the AC was sorted, they were also very comfortable. The bar was also very cute, with tables on the courtyard which was lovely.

Now the bad bits. Breakfast is just simply terrible, and really lets the place down. Stale bread and pastries (in Italy!!! .... I didn't realise this was possible) un-drinkable coffee, and waitress staff that are far too comfortable and seem to be under some impression that they are in charge, and not there for the guests benefit. To the point when we walked they told us where to sit!! The breakfast area has two rooms and a lovely terrace area, we went to sit outside but were told we were not allowed, and when my partner sat down in a separate room which had been laid for breakfast, he got told off by one of the staff, like he was a naughty school boy.

It's a shame about the breakfast, if it was not for this the San Gallo would score five stars. My recommendation, forget breakfast and the rude waitresses, stay the night, and eat in breakfast in one of the fabulous restaurants near the square.

We have enjoyed our two stays in San Gallo Palace Hotel in the end of April and in the beginning of May 2014. The people who work there are very friendly and helpful. With their guidance, we have had a very good holiday in Florence. Our first room is rather big with a narrower balcony. The second room is smaller but with a bigger balcony. We prefer the first room but the second room was good too. The breakfast in the hotel is very good, particularly the coffee. Between our two stays, we went to Venice and we were able to keep our main luggage in San Gallo Palace Hotel. We thank for this. We like the location of the hotel, which gives us the feeling of staying in a community. The hotel is not in the very centre of Florence, but it is in the walkable distance to the city centre, so this is what we liked. When we travelled with big luggage between airport, train station and the hotel, we took a taxi. The rest of time, we just walked to train station, bus station and city centre for about twenty minutes (allowing time to absorb the wonderful scenery). It is a very pleasant walk. We enjoyed our walking experience in Florence. We have been to several restaurants near the hotel, recommended by the staff of the hotel. We really appreciate this guidance on restaurants and food. We have had a wonderful eating experience in Florence. We have had a wonderful time in Florence this time. If we visit Florence again, we would like to stay in San Gallo Palace Hotel again.

A beautiful small hotel situated just outside central Florence. Had a very good twin room overlooking the garden. It was super quiet, clean and comfortable. Marble bathroom with bath and shower, tasteful furnishings and good breakfast. Three minutes walk from the Hoppa bus stop. The staff deserve a special mention. They were all excellent. Would use this hotel again as a well priced, city centre hotel.

Room Tip: For a quiet room ask to overlook the garden.
