My wife and I stumbled upon this shop and were drawn in by what we thought were unique paintings of the Tuscan countryside. Those paintings turned out to be the most beautiful and intricate mosaics we have ever seen. Until you see how they are made, you can't really appreciate what you are looking at because it doesn't seem possible that the human hand could piece something like this together. This is true craftsmanship and we couldn't leave without taking one with us as a keepsake of an unbelievable stay in Florence.

When visiting Florence late last month, our tour guide made an "artisan stop" and took us to Le Pietre Nell'Arte. What a magical place! Besides the remarkable art work all in stone mosaics, the highlight of our visit was to see the masters at work right in the shop. This gave us an appreciation of how tedious the process of cutting the stone pieces for a perfect fit was. We ended coming back the next day and purchased a framed work of Florence scenery with the Duomo and hills behind it. A bit pricey but understandable given the uniqueness and quality of the work. Amaizingly, Master Renzo, the artist, was there and graciously autographed and dated the back of the stone - A treasure for us to keep in the family.

We were so fortunate to walk by this wonderful shop on our way back from the Accademia. The quality of this incredible art work took our breath away. We were shown how the work is done including the selection and cutting of the stone and learned about the history of mosaic art. We were able to purchase a beautiful piece that will remind us of our special time in Florence.

The visit our group had to see the way the tiles are cut and added into the artwork displayed was a great experience. Also, the beautiful artwork that was on display in the store was just incredible to see finished products then knowing what it took to get the pieces to look like that. I'm simply amazed!

What a great experience! We've been taking groups of students to Florence for years, always focused on arts and artisanship. Pietre Dure is a distinctive Florentine art form and artisan tradition. We've often taken groups to the Museum of the Opificio della Pietra Dure and to other shops that specialize in Pietre Dure. This year, our visit to the Scarpelli Mosaici was far and away the most productive we've ever enjoyed. Our host, Catia Scarpelli, provided an informative talk on the history and meaning of Pietre Dure and moderated a artisan's demonstration of the cutting, shaping, and fitting of the pieces of an artwork.

This is a true Florentine experience -- going into a gallery/workshop and talking with the the people of create the ideas and produce the piece. This is shop/workshop that showcases a wonderful form of art as well as the extraordinary skill of the artisans who produce the work. The Scarpelli family is proud of its artworks and pleased to share their knowledge of the craft. This is a shop visit that is very much worthwhile! It's a place to browse, to watch the work in progress, and to ask questions!
