People often say that for Italians, service is not a priority, hence why the English often find wait staff a bit abrupt. However, the night before we ate at Cent'ori, the waiting staff at Osteria Antica Mescita San Niccolo (a few doors down) had proven this wrong and given us an extremely enjoyable meal with excellent service and food. THEN WE ATE HERE. It was the worst evening and meal we had in Florence, and put a real dampener on our last night in the city. DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU ARE A TOURIST. You will not be welcomed. The food was average. The atmosphere was frosty; as soon as we sat down we knew we'd made a mistake choosing to eat at Cent'ori. The blonde waitress was extremely cold. She gave us funny looks when we had to check the English version of the menu again. The whole experience was actually quite upsetting. Needless to say we quickly ate our food quickly (my best friend had gnocchi with porcini and I had the spinach & ricotta ravioli- we didn't bother ordering secondi), asked for the bill and left, leaving no tip. Overall, if you're in the vicinity of Piazzale Michelangelo, always choose the Osteria Antica Mescita San Niccolo over this place.
A little more about our experience:
We waited for someone to notice that we wanted to sit down; no one was sat inside, and the outside tables were full of locals (normally a good sign for quality of food), as well as the owner and other local men who seemed to be celebrating. We requested to sit outside so the waitress begrudgingly moved some tables around. It was a little intimidating and we could tell the owners and his pals were having a little laugh at our expense in Italian (I understand a little and did my best with the Italian menu that the waitress handed us when she clearly knew we were tourists).
She was extremely cold and unwelcoming, whereas she was polite and smiley to the other customers; we didn't even get a smile?! It just seems that, in a city that relies on tourists during the summer season, they would a bit more accommodating. Also, not ordering wine that evening seems to be a big problem. We were served soft drinks in the bottle. With no glass. What kind of service is that??? Also, not their fault, but the outdoor seating is currently surrounded by road works- not exactly a buzzing atmosphere.
