Stairs up are quite fascinating as you ascend between the walls; and get to look up into the cupola with the many paintings depicting their very real view of hell, the devil/demons ascending up through man, saints, angels and god.
Family made sure I had obtained a scheduled time to go, which is done right next to where the tickets are purchased. When we went in 3 days later, someone else showed up with a ticket and no time ticket; and were turned away. Get your ticket in advance as the times were full for nearly 48 hrs from the time we bought our tickets. BTW: This is part of a package deal including the museum, the baptistry, and the bell tower. Not able to buy them separately, so plan your time accordingly if you are not fit enough to climb over 300 steps twice in one day (cupola and bell tower)

If you admire renaissance architecture or historical engineering then this is a must see. The +400 steps - in occasionally dark and cramped stairways - make the stunning views all the more worthwhile particularly when you emerge into the sunlight at the lantern. The contrast in light and dark and scale is amazing. You MUST however book in advance for this experience.

Accessed from a separate entrance to the cathedral is this pre-ticketed climb to the dome and viewing platforms. You can actually experience the cathedral from parts of this walk which saves queueing up in ridiculously long lines for the cathedral.
The ascent was 463 steps each way. At the half way point there is a narrow landing that follows the wonderful artwork of the dome. Below through the glass we had good views down the cathedral and it gave us the opportunity to appreciate it while it was quiet and empty.
Then there was the dome itself. It was a tremendous work of art and huge. It appeared to have four layers. The lowest layer depicted the underworld. There looked to be a hydra, Cerberus, faun, a skeleton like a grim reaper and numerous imps amongst the dammed. Then there was a row of angels who were trying to pull people out of the underworld. Above them were the saved and the very top level presumably the saints. There was also a magnificent cupola ensconced in the middle.
After this was a demanding series of spiral staircases and a final ladder-like set of stairs and we were at the top. Here the views were magnificent. We could see all the main sites of Florence including the many palaces and gardens set on the hillside across the Arno river.
The return walk again passes under the dome so you get a second look at it.
As tickets must be pre-booked we found it best to still go early to beat the crowds.

An amazing experience. Book your time to climb the dome in advance online and arrive 10 minutes early and you will have plenty of time. The climb is 400 steps, which could be challenging for some but wasn’t that bad and there are plenty of stops along the way. It was surprisingly cool inside given that it was 90 outside. The climb itself is amazing when you think about where you are (inside the walls and between the inner and outer domes). You also get to see the cathedral, both from the ground level and the walkways above so we didn’t feel the need to wait in line or schedule another tour to see the inside of the cathedral again (checked that box). You get really close to the fresco on the roof, which is also amazing and a much better view of it than seeing it from the floor. The views from the top are obviously amazing and this was the coolest thing we did in Florence. Highly recommended. Total time from our entrance time to walking out the door at the end was less than 1.5 hours with tons of stops and pictures.

The climb to the top of the dome was worrying me. I was tired from the trek previous day and bell tower climb in afternoon. Started the climb thinking i will return if it gets too bad. But the 450+ steps did not feel too bad. There were many breezy areas during the climb to stop and rest a few minutes. The very narrow sections were well managed with only one way traffic. I had accounted for an hour to climb but made it in about 20 to 30 minutes. Was totally worth it. Beautiful views of inside the dome and the city looked beautiful from outside the top of the dome.
I would suggest book towards evening when it is cooler and less crowded... So you don't feel hot at all and the resting areas are free. We entered 6pm and was perfect.
