“Location is good”
Reviewed 5 May 2010

This hotel was very charming. My niece and I had the room with "private exterior bath" and were not sure what to expect. It is a room with a private bathroom down the hall. When I say down the hall, I mean you have to walk past several rooms and it uses the same key as the room to lock it. I would suggest the hotel provide bathrobes for the guests of this room and maybe a shelf to place toiletries on.

The hotel does offer free wi-fi, but you need to be in the lobby area to access. Important: If you need to access facebook, forget it! It gets blocked along with many other sites. If you don't care about accessing many sites, then this is a great bargain.

The location was really nice, hotel staff very friendly and accomodating. We had many choices of restaurants and shops nearby. We thought we could walk from the train station but we brought a bit too much luggage. If you don't have a whole wardrobe to pull, it would not be a bad walk. The taxis are pretty pricey for the distance because they will charge for bags and stuff. We were able to walk to the train station for all of our other needs.

The breakfast was mediocre, but par for what we have had in other hotels during our trip in Italy.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 days. I have never been so conflicted about whether or not I could recommend a hotel. Our room-- a junior suite-- was huge. The bathroom was newly re-done and beautiful. The view was gorgeous. But, some of the staff was very very helpful, while some completely unhelpful. The hotel offers internet--- but only on the lobby floor, and they block some sites---like Facebook. The breakfast was in a beautiful room, but it was crowded and the food was minimal--- but there was a huge bar where they would made any coffee drink of your choosing. I had the feeling that the decorator, the plumber and the electrician quit half way through the renovation. There were holes cut in the wall or our room in places, and wires pulled through--- and left to dangle. There were beautiful new drapes at the 25 foot tall windows--- but the rest of the walls were absolutely bare. Sometimes the toilet tank (mounted high on the wall) overfilled with fresh water and ran onto the floor. You had to close the bathroom door carefully, or the handle fell off. The faucets were on backward, the beautitul (and expensive) makeup mirror had been put on wrong, so just dangled from its mount and could not be used. There were dozens of other such little problems in the room like that. So, if you stay at this hotel pack your sense of humor!

Stayed at hotel Bretagna while on holiday in europe. The location was perfect, right on the water and close to shops/tourist attractions. The hotel itself is very nice, the staff were very helpful and the free wireless internet in the lounge was fantastic. We booked a 'small' double so we were not expecting much. The room was ok, definitely small which we didnt have a problem with. The only issue was the toilet which after each flush sprayed water from above (the system was attached to the wall above). We informed reception and they went to fix however it still sprayed a small amount of water after each flush. Overall it was great except for the toilet!

We booked Hotel Bretagna as a budget hotel, and were hoping for the best after reading that they were doing renovations. The people in the reception were very friendly and put us in one of the renovated rooms, although they explained it had no bath as it had been advertised (they wouldn't refund for this though).
The room itself was vast, beautifully renovated with the original gilded designs on the walls, a painted ceiling, and gilded doors - and furnished very comfortably. There were armchairs, a desk, a day-bed, and a just-right four-poster bed, all of which looked tiny compared to the remaining floorspace! The bathroom was new, tastefully done and spotless. There was extra heating and a TV available. The only things missing would be a wardrobe, a telephone and perhaps a mini-fridge. Reception explained that this was because it had just been put to use and apologised for any inconvenience. It was no big deal though as we loved the room at first sight.
The breakfast was taken in another painted-ceiling room and was plain continental but plentiful, which was appreciated as we spent hours sight-seeing every day. We could even have espressos or capuccinos brewed on the spot, a nice start to the day. We would then use the sitting room's Wi-Fi connection to plan our day, as it was the only place where the signal was strong enough.
A friend who was also staying at the hotel did not have a similarly glamorous room, however he was pretty much satisfied with the hotel as well.
We made a point of returning to our room for an hour of relaxation every day, which we invariably spent on the day-bed gazing at the ceiling - it was like leaving the Florence palazzos to return to our own, a feeling we both loved!!

You stay in this hotel for the atmosphere of staying in a period style old world residences. The hotel is a converted mansion and consequently has loads of character!

The room itself (standard double with bathroom) was large and full of period furniture. However as this is an old residence, the hot water in the bathroom took some time to fire up. Be careful when you book as not all the rooms have a bathroom.

The location was fantasic - right in front of the river and only 2 blocks down from Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery. It is also a short walk from the Station and Duomo. Florence is a very compact city and all the sights are within walking distance from the hotel.

The staff where helpful and friendly.

The breakfast was avearge but standard fare for European standards.

Florence has many hotels and as the city is very compact, you can possibly find a hotel closer to all the sights within the same price frame, but if you are looking to stay somewhere with a bit more character that the usual modern hotel, then this is the place for you. If not and you don't like older style hotels, don't stay here.

I read all of the reviews on Trip Advisor and was leery of booking at this hotel. Lots of people complained of the service and room quality. But this hotel was the only one with a river view room that we could afford so I took the plunge and reserved a Junior Suite with river view.
We were not disappointed. The room was gorgeous! 25' ceilings, huge bed and an enormous bathroom. The hotel itself was so beautiful inside! And an easy walk to anywhere you want to go in Florence. The staff was wonderful to us - from making reservations for the Uffizi to making me another cappuccino at breakfast. Also - if you bring a computer, they have free wi-fi in the sitting room (the only hotel we found with FREE wi-fi)
About breakfast - we stayed in three different hotels throughout our trip. The Bretagna had by far, the best breakfast available. Fresh hot croissants, ham, eggs, rolls, and if you brought her a cup, the lady behind the bar would make you an espresso for free (they charge at other times of the day) - or two as was in my case.
I can imagine how, if you paid for a single room with a shared bathroom you might not enjoy your stay here. I probably would not have chosen this particular hotel for a 'budget' stay. But the Junior suite rooms, though they are a more expensive, are totally worth the money you're paying.
One more comment - about the noise. Yep, it is noisy. Even though we were on the river side and three floors up, it's still noisy. But I've never been to a major city WASN'T noisy. If you're looking for peace and quiet please you'll have to look farther afield.
