“Suprisingly did the trick ...”
Reviewed 16 August 2012

I recently stayed at the Constantini Hotel, a recommandation of my business partner. Though my first impression was the place was rundown and would need a good fixup, it did not linger. The room i was granted was fair size, clean and had a good shower (not so common in Italy). I enjoyed the confortable double bed and the very efficient central airco system. Bonus was the nice view from the Campanile. Breakfast was ok as was service. Very Good deal considering the price I paid. Would go back.

Location is the stregth of this hotel, no doubt. The rooms are nice, so are the bathrooms. They offer free wifi service for guests and a very nice breakfast. The rooms have AC and TV and -if you're lucky enough- you'll get to see the top of Giotto's Campanile from your window! If all members of the staff would like to smile a little bit more, it would be the perfect hotel for it's price and location! So, people at Hotel Costantini smiling is not a crime! =)

The location of this place is stellar....and being a 2-star hotel, it;s very simple and in some ways "you get what you pay for".

The good:
-Location: very close to train station and right next to the Duomo, totally central.
-Clean: the room was very clean
-Room size: the room was a good size (we had a double)
-A/C: we had air conditioning, which was welcome in July! Though we DID have to ask the staff to turn it on, they won't unless you ask to save energy. We didn't have any issues with them turning it off as I saw mentioned in a different review.
-Quiet: as far as hotels go, we weren't bothered by any noise from other rooms or the hallways.

The Bad:
-The room smelled HORRIBLE. It had an awful sewer stench, the type that happens when water isn't run through pipes in a long time. Since our windows opened up to a narrow and also sort of smelly interior courtyard, opening the windows really didn't help air it out much.
- View: there was none. It's not important really, since we wanted cheap and easy accommodations and certainly didn't book this room for the view....BUT it would have been nice to have a view that allowed fresh air into the room.

Overall, I'd stay there again since it was clean and cheap....but I'd at least know there's a chance the room might smell pretty bad.

So, the staff was okay, not as friendly as others have boasted, but as accommodating as one would expect in a place like Florence, over run with tourists. To understand our situation, our group is from Canada and enjoy air conditioning, since Italy at this time of year is EXTREMELY hot! We made the booking because the property on Expedia boasted air conditioned rooms. It was misleading. On the last morning, we decided to sleep in a little (9:30) and as was the case the first night, the air conditioning is only turned on by reception when you ask them. It must be on a timer and shuts off during the night making sleeping rather "sticky" and humid by morning. I requested that the manager turn it on again at 9:30 when we woke, so we wouldn't have to be overly uncomfortable for our last 1.5 hours of packing up before the check out time. He was EXTREMELY RUDE, refusing at first to do it, then engaging another patron who decided to bring up complaints about no hot water in a comparison of how much we were being charged for the room and how it was cheaper than he was paying, so the other Swiss patron would not encourage the disagreement. He said it was unreasonable to ask for air for such a short time, he said that we were not paying enough, even though he is offering the rate we paid via Expedia and chose to offer the same to us when we asked him for the second night. After I insisted he turn it on for us for our last hour, he was EXTREMELY unprofessional and even came down the hallway threatening that if we left the hotel ONE MINUTE late he would charge us for an extra night. I was APPALLED! I would have let the mediocre breakfast (few plain buns, nutella, jam, dry crackers, no fruit, nothing hot) go without mention in a review until this other incident confirmed that the manager is NOT very tourist friendly! I DO NOT recommend this establishment. The location is good and the price was good, but it seems that you will have to go through a guilt trip to get any of the services that they claim to offer for free. We were even given a little bit of an attitude when requesting a slip of paper for the "free wireless". It is given out in 2 hours stints, I was traveling with three other young people who had iPads and iPods and he seemed upset that we were asking for the code. I will NEVER recommend and actually will encourage people to go somewhere else, unless customer service means nothing to you or if you plan to simply sleep and leave. If you expect to find a place with decent air conditioning, then make the trip to Naples and visit Cinquestelle B & B, or pick ANYWHERE else!!!!

This hotel is in a former palace (on the upper floors, with lift) 50 meters from the Duomo. You can walk to all the main sights of Florence and always find your way back. Some rooms look out towards the Duomo but the main street can be noisy. The hotel is not luxurious but comfortable and spotless, perfectly fine for a visit to the city. Breakfast is minimal, simple Italian style, meaning only sweet croissants and pastries and bread/jam, or yogurt, but fortified with delicious freshly ground espresso/coffee. If you pose questions to the manager you'll get a wealth of information (for example, mention you're going to Siena). The wifi is free and can be intermittent. Passwords are only good for an hour so get an exra ticket, say before you go to bed, and stay one ticket ahead.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view of the Duomo up the street (see photo) have noise from the street.
