Hotel Universo has modern rooms albeit the wallpaper is perhaps a little too °funky° and bright but it gives it character. The bathroom was a little small with the shower and the shower curtain leaving little to be desired. The curtain sticks to you when your showering and makes the floor all wet but perhaps this ties in with the °funky° theme.

Due to the number of thefts of airconditioning controllers, the concierge will control the aircon in the rooms. If you want to change the temperature, you will need to make a request to the front desk.

The breakfast is the best we have had in Italy. Served on the 1st floor, the selection of yoghurt, cereal, fruit (green apples), fruit juice and baguettes is sensationally fullfilling. The (upon request) expresso is also of exceptional quality.

If you need the internet, the hotel does have apple macs and charge Euro 3 for 30 mins or 5 euràs for 24 hours (yes, thats right 24 hours - bargain!) They dont have a printer but you can send them an email and they will print for you.

Overall good, but did miss some key touches i.e. small bathroom with a bad curtain shower, a bed on wheels which can move around a bit and cleaners who do not replace bathroom amenities i.e. soap, toilet paper etc.

Universo was the cheapest hotel we paid for compared to our other accomodations in Rome and Venice, and it was the BEST. Great location, right next to the beautiful Santa Maria Novella Piazza, our room window looked over the piazza which was gorgeous in the day and at night. The room was spacious (as compared to our hole in the wall in Venice). The hotel is also located very near one of the best restaurants in Florence- Buca Mario, which serves awesome Florentine Steak and whose table wine is cheap and great (it happens to be a DOCG). The hotel is also located within walking distance of the Duomo, San Lorenzo Church and the Central Market (where you can get fresh parma harm and cheese at great prices).

Staff weren't friendly, but we were ok with it, as long as they answered out questions! We realised pretty soon that our expectations of service in Italy should not be pegged at the standards of service in Japan.

In summary, I highly recommend this hotel, esp room 41- great view!

We arrived into Florence on the Eurostar Train from Bologna Centrale on the Monday, we had two nights booked in the Hotel Universo before we headed off to San Gimignano for a friends wedding. We were greeted in the hotel reception by a man who obviously had no interest in us, our booking or being there in general. Rude is putting his attitude mildly and we didn't feel welcome at all.
He gave us the room key and told us to take the elevator to the 4th floor. This was an old elevator for two people only and shook and bounced with such a shudder when it stopped we started using the stairs for peace of mind. We looked around the 4th floor for our room number only to find it was in between floors 4 and 5!! We had to go out a door, which I'm sure was the emergency exit, down three steps onto a concrete stair case to go up a few more stairs to a floor which is between floors 4 & 5. There are three rooms here, we had the room at the very end of the corridor. The room itself was big enough but had very little natural light, two walls lights and a standing lamp (which didn't work). The double bed was two singles put together which moved apart the minute we got into bed. Our view was of a building sight which was in the middle of the internal courtyard. The bathroom was very small, with dirty sink, floor and the shower was disgusting with a broken door, I had the quickest showers of my life there as the floor would get wet very quickly because of the broken shower door. The toiletries consisted of two sachets of shower gel and that was all.
We decided to call down to the reception and request a different room as we were paying €85 a night, there was one other room they had to offer. We were met on the 2nd floor by a girl who showed us to a room which was half the size, had illuminous orange, blue & green zig zag wallpaper, smaller window so less light again, bathroom was like something from a horror movie with a very low flickering light. We took the first room back, the girl looked very displeased and was very rude about this.
We were woken up at 8am both morning with workmen on the back of the hotel who were cutting steel or stone all day. The breakfast room is on the 1st floor but has canteen table so you end up sitting beside the other guests at the same table. The breakfast itself was fresh and nice but only consisted of bread, biscuits or cereal. The woman who ran the breakfast room was incredibly rude and shouted at me and other guests who attempted to move a cup or get a coffee, which was incredibly embarrassing with everyone else watching.
The hotel is in a good location, everything is in 10 -15 mins walk from it and there's a good little Irish bar down from it, The Fiddler's Elbow, and the Firenze SMN train station is litterally a few minutes walk, but unfortunately this is the only plus to this hotel that we found!
After 2 days here we were very happy to be leaving, we found the room and bathroom a disgrace for the price we paid, the staff incredibly rude & the area a bit rough at night. I would not recommend this hotel and would never stay in it should we return to Florence at some stage!

We went to Florence for the day from Rome and decided to spend the night. The location was PERFECT - one block from the Train station and across from the church. Everything was within walking distance.
The staff were kind & friendly. The rate inexpensive. And the rooms were modern, fun, clean & hip.
There was no view - but hey, just step outside - and wow what a view!

Comfy beds- what a plus!

I recommend this hotel!

We stayed 2 nights in hotel Universo.
Located near the trainstation, next to the beautifull Santa Maria Novella church and 5 min's walkingdistance from the duomo, it's ideal to explore Florence. You will find a lot of very nice trattoria's, restaurants and shops in this central but quiet neighbourhood.
Frontdeskpersonnel was friendly and helpfull.
Our room was surprisingly spatious, looked and smelled brand new and was tastefully furnished. We enjoyed the flatscreen-TV, minibar and the very clean bathroom with bathtub and shower.
Breakfast was OK (bread, rolls, cereals, fruit, cheese,...).
We loved it!

Just got back from a 5 night stay at Universo, had a nice experience. Hotel was in a really nice location, walking distance to everything. Breakfast was really nice and the room was nice and big. Only downside with the room was that we found it to be quite dark and our view wasnt especially nice. The staff were nice and friendly. The area near the hotel at the station had a few 'characters' but we never had a problem with anybody. Would recommend this hotel to others for a really good location and nice rooms just a shame they werent a little bit lighter!

We stayed in Hotel Universo for 2 days in the beginning of the year.
We discovered the hotel in the Internet, and as it seemed it was very modern and really well located (close to railway station and to historic center).
As we had big expectations we were just dissapointed with some details, nothing serious, but without them our accomodation would just be perfect ;)
- our room was in an intermedious flour, we had to go out in 4th flour and then climb some stairs (with all bags was not so easy!)
- in the 1st morning the air conditioning wasn't working and so wasn't the hot hater, and the staff wasn't nice to solve the problem.
- the rooms are perfectlly redecorated but the wc's are in the original state, it would be nice if they change the bathroom decoration too.
But we found some really nice things too.
- The hotel site is really good and have nice promotions
- The hotel is really well located
- the breakfast is very nice and helpfull.
- the breakfast staff was very nice too (speacilly the brazilian girl)
Overall it was a nice experinece and we recommend it almost everyone.
