“Great choice for centrally located self catering”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2011

I chose this residence based on the reviews online and was very happy with the result. Hilda is very centrally located which is perfect when sightseeing - everything was walkable and convenient for returning and resting our weary feet! The concierge desk isn't open all the time so we were furnished with our own key.
Being self catering was a good choice for Florence as it is an expensive city and therefore having the option to self cater and store some cold beer was helpful for budgeting and also for allowing morning lie-ins. There is a supermarket just a couple of minutes away.
Being central, I was concerned about possible noise but it was not an issue at all. The apartment was very well appointed, modern in design and spacious with very good kitchen facilities and ironing etc.
The staff were very helpful from time of booking (enquiries about late check-in, transfers), to giving directions/booking tickets/restaurants and leaving (we had a latish flight and could leave luggage /change/call a cab). Note: it is well worth pre-booking early morning tickets so some of the main sites to avoid the horrendous queues.
The small gripes are: the aircon unit turned itself on in the night and made a racket which resulted in a some half asleep fumbling to turn it off. The wifi was very weak in some parts of the apartment (namely the bed room) which was annoying given the English language TV channels are sparse. A suggestion would also be that they create a DVD library.
All in all, a good choice.

Re car hire in Florence: note firstly whatever your hire company states is necessary, you will need your passport. Secondly, the local insurance as breathtakingly astronomical - we ended up reducing from 2 days to 1 and complaining to the hire company on returning home as the indication of likely local charge was non existent.

We have stayed at the Residence Hilda twice and for both times we had very very pleasant experince. Great location, clean and spacious. There is a laundromat, just opposite to the residence. Near to cafe and museums. Very helpful and nice staff. Superb service, more than willing to assist, especially Francesco. Will definitely stay there if we travel to Florence again.

We stayed at the Hilda since it was recommended to us by our travel agent and we weren't disappointed. The location was fantastic. Easy walking distance to the good sites but far enough away that you didn't feel you were in the middle of everything. The fact that we had a suite where we could eat in when we wanted was a tremendous benefit for us. The suite was very large and extremely comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful (though not there 24/7 - we had a key to allow us to access the building when they weren't there). We highly recommend the local produce market for fruit and vegetables for the room. Our only criticism was that the wifi was spotty. It didn't work in all parts of the apartment and the signal was stronger at some times of day than others.

I was hesitant at first to book at an apart-hotel for fear that I would miss the 24-hour concierge service, but the price and location (a 2 minute walk to the Duomo, 8 minutes to the Arno) made the risk worthwhile. When we arrived at the Hilda, I was amazed by how huge the room was - it was "only" a standard room, but the size of a 1-bedroom apartment, in fact larger than most apartments in NYC or London. You walk in to a large foyer area, then a sitting room with couch, table and 4 chairs, a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, wine glasses, cutlery, plates, cooking utensils, and a separate bedroom area with very comfortable queen size bed (not the typical hard european mattress or 2 single beds pushed together -- this bed was more comfortable than the Westin in Rome!) . The bathroom was better than mine at home -- it had a sparkling-clean marble rainforest shower with separate bidet, 8 people could fit in that bathroom easily. the room itself was spotless with hardwood floors and new, modern furniture. Even though its an apart-hotel, you get maid service with daily towel and linen changes for an extra $5, and the good news is that they never came until we left the room (no matter what time that was). We had left a half-finished glass of white wine on the table, and they placed a napkin over it and put it in the fridge for us (just like your Mom would do). And my fears about the lack of concierge were unfounded -- the front desk staff was more helpful and attentive (especially via email) than any concierge at a "big" hotel -- they made restaurant reservations, booked a wine tour in tuscany with a private guide, booked 2 city walking tours at the very last minute, and gave very practical advice (such as to take the bus for 5 euro to the Mall for shopping, instead of wasting $35 euro per person on the hired minivan). They also had spectacular restaurant recommendations -- they sent us to a local, trendy, just-opened mozerella and wine bar (we were the only tourists). Their English was perfect and they were very friendly and professional. I have very high standards when traveling (I prefer Aman and Mandarin and SLH), and was not disappointed. I have been to Florence 14 times and have stayed at all the 5 stars (from Fiesole to the Savoy) and would never stay anywhere but the Hilda from now on-- amazing value and service! You will not be disappointed.
