“Great location and price”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 February 2013

This is a bit of delayed review - I stayed at Casa di Barbano in December 2011. Moraq, the owner, was a great hostess, friendly but unobtrusive. The lodging is in the ground floor of a residential building. The room we stayed in had a private bathroom in the bedroom (much like a regular hotel room). Overall a great stay and would definitely stay here again. Pros and cons as follows:

Pros:
- Great location. Close to the main train station, about a 5 minute walk. Florence is a very walkable city and all the touristy sites are within a 15 minute stroll.
- Good value. Paid about 65 euro a night. Fabulous price for the location, in my opinion. Also, a lovely fresh breakfast (warm croissants from a local bakery, hot water for tea, fresh milk, etc) is included, which is brought to your room at the time you specify - very nice.
- The B&B is located on a quiet street which doesn't get a lot of traffic (car or otherwise) but I always felt safe, even when returning alone late at night.
- Sitting area with a nice collection of books for you to peruse/borrow.

Cons:
- The bathroom was a little cramped. Better organization could be had - e.g. a shelf for laying things down (there was little to no counter space) or hooks for clothing/towels.

Of note (not really pros nor cons, per se):
- Owner has a cat, which didn't bother me at all, but if you have allergies or a cat-aversion, be aware.

We spent two nights in Florence in early Feb. The price was a great value. The B&B is located a short walk from the train station (Santa Maria Novello) and bus depot, less than 10 min. Moraq gave us excellent directions. Moraq was there to greet us and get us settled, and gave us a map and marked out the sights we wanted to visit. We arrived early in the day, and she kept our luggage until our room was ready and then put it in there for us. The room was quite big (by European B&B standards) and comfortable. She also let us use one of her English-language guidebooks to Florence during our stay, and there are many other good books available with more info and history on the Florence area. The B&B is located within walking distance (for us) of all the major city sights, and even up to the hill overlooking the city center (which is also easily accessible by bus). City buses stop nearby. When we woke up the first morning, there had been a problem with the hot water overnight (she had just had the annual check-up on it within the past week), but Moraq was right on top of it. She brought us an electric heater and called the repairman, even though it was Sunday. By the time we did a little sightseeing, it was all fixed. Things like this happen, and the way she handled it so promptly is all anyone could do and much appreciated by us. She lives on the property with her family, which is a huge advantage when there are problems.
Moraq brings breakfast to you in your room and accommodated us with a slightly earlier time than usual when we needed to catch an early train. We sincerely enjoyed visiting with her. If you stay, make sure to visit the little shop just a block over (can't remember the name offhand) that is owned by a Sicilian man who makes the best cannoli and gelato, among other things. Moraq recommended that shop, and it was a big hit with us! We would not hesitate to stay here should we return to Florence.

I think this is probably one of the best deals you can get in Florence for such a price. The location is perfect, very close to the train station, the Academy, and at a walking distance from the rest of the city. If this is your first time in Europe, do not be deceived by the entrance, which communicates with the rest of the building, and let yourself enjoy this charming accommodation at the heart of Florence.
Moraq is such a nice and helpful host that we felt very soon at home. A book collection including Florence and d'Uffizi history in many different languages is very conveniently located in a shared room. The breakfast was really enjoyable.
Do not hesitate to select this place if going to Florence.

This is our second stay at the Casa Di Barbano B&B. Two years ago my wife and I had such a wonderful experience that we decided to stay here again when bringing our two college age boys to Florence. Moraq is such a wonderful host. You won't find a better or more helpful B&B owner anywhere. She goes out of her way to make sure your stay is comfortable and memorable. The second time around for us at the Casa Di Barbano was like staying with family. We were looking forward to getting to Florence to see Moraq and her family again. The nice thing about this B&B is that there are only 3 rooms. Very small and intimate. On our last night my wife and I did laundry at a local laudromat a few blocks away. The washer malfunctioned not allowing the door to open for us to retrieve our clothes. Moraq was right there when she heard about our crisis calling and texting the owners of the laundromat. This was at about 9:00PM. Her messaging got to the owners who cut the power off so the machine door would open. Needless to say we got our clothes and just in time since we were leaving Florence the next morning. Moraq serves her guests a very nice breakfast consisting of coffee, crossaints, breads, jams, and assorted cookies, delivered right to your room. More than enough to get you off to a good start. The rooms are clean, spacious, and nicely decorated in traditional Italian style. Moraq was very helpful in making our museum reservations and in providing tips for navigating the city and other sites of interest. This B&B is a short walk, about 5-10 minutes, to the train station and within walking distance of all sights. The neighorhood is safe. We never had any problems on either visits. There is a park a block away on Nationale where locals gather with there children in the evenings to eat, drink, play games, and socialize. Never saw any drug use on either visit. My wife and I walked by and through the park on numerous occassions, late at night, and never had any issues. There is a very nice family owned deli right across the street where we would buy water and other snacks, as well as wine. We found the street nice to be average. Closing your window takes care of that problem. All in all we are very happy with our stay at Casa Di Barbano. So happy, that we will be visiting again in April with four other family members. This B&B is an excellent value for the money. Moraq, thanks again for an awesome stay. We will see you again in a few months.
The only con I can think of would be that the pillows might need to be changed out soon. They were kind of flat, but then again we noticed two others in the closet that we never did use. Other than that, nothing else comes to mind.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice and spacious.

It was so good to host you again and meet your sons. Thank you for this great and lengthy review.
I have noted your comment about the pillows. We do have thicker pillows, also, in the back. The preference of high or low pillows is such a personal choice among our guests. Your comment, though, gives me the idea that it may be better to provide thicker pillows on the beds and then keep the thinner pillows in the armadio for guests that prefer them (as I do).

Moraq was a great host who helped as much as she could while we were there. She booked our visit to the Uffizi and also recommended a few sights while we were in Florence. This accommodation provided good service, however there was a few things out of her control, which I would take into consideration before staying again.

Pros:
Breakfast - Enough to make it to lunch
Room – Large and clean
Internet – Wifi worked

Cons:
Location - Near a park where we noticed drug and alcohol use at night.
Location - Noisy based on traffic and street noise outside our room
Room - Quite dated and the beds were also quite old. For example, in the bathroom, we noticed the pipe connecting the toilet tank and the toilet bowl was taped together. There was also mudding around the bathroom door that was unfinished.

Based on the price, I would expect a little more.

Great little place to stay in Florence. The host was so lovely and gave us a map when we arrived and showed us where to go and what to do. Nice traditional Italian rooms which were clean and comfortable. Good Italian breakfast brought to your room in the morning. Walking distance to all the main sights. Really good value place to stay. Would recommend.

When I arrived Florence with huge luggage and find the hotel, the host told me there is no room for me anymore. But I booked the room at least 3 month ago!! And no SMS, no calls before to inform me.

Then she took me to a "3 star" hotel to let me stay there. The hotel is not cheap, and I can't connect WIFI in the room.

We agree that this was a big mistake and we are sorry. We try to be careful and not to create overbooking mistakes, but in the business it can happen that a reservation is registered wrong - wrong day or wrong month - as happened in this case. I apologize to this traveler, Moraq.
