“A real Tuscan experience”
Reviewed 7 January 2009

Four friends set out to experience the Tuscan life and suceeded greatly! We booked this accomodation, by seeing it on a website and getting in contact with them directly. They gave a good description of the accomodation and good directions too.

We arrived the first night in Pisa and stayed there, went the next morning to see the leaning tower and then got in the car and drove to the accomodation. We booked in for an organic home made meal with the owners in their nearby farmhouse and what a surprise! They had invited friends who were very friendly, with good banter along with some great guitar playing which was fab.........but only a patch on the delicious food. Unfortunately, not knowing the custom, we enjoyed the first course so well they offered us more and after seconds and thirds we were very happy, but didn't realise that there were seven more courses to go!!! The food was out of this world and the family and friends so welcoming and entertaining, it was a real Tuscan experience.

The accomodation was very nice - a converted grain barn - really picturesque with a fabulous rural view. Both apartments were equiped with kitchens and utensils so we tended to eat in most nights ,we'd cook in the apartments, sit outside to enjoy good food and wine. The supermarket is at the end of the road with good opening hours and a variety of good food to cook up. We also enjoyed some great, inexpensive, tuscan/italian food for lunch in the various locations that we visited during the day.

The apartments are very well situated for people who want to travel and so we tended to travel most days but no journey being too long. Firenza, Siena, and Arezzo. Firenza requires at least two visits and you can book any of the gallerys etc on line ahead of time which avoids very very long queues (a mistake we made!). On the advise of the Tizzo della Torre family, we took the train, again the station is only at the end of the road, as parking in Florence is impossible ( a good tip!). Siena is NOT to be missed, really enjoyed this place and would love to return.

We had a fabulous holiday here and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for the real Tuscan experience. We spent the last night, again going to dinner with the family and it could not surpass the first, the only reason being that the element of surprise was gone, but it more than equalled it in the food quality with all different t courses (all 8!) to what we had before.

I would highly recommend this to people who want to have easy access to travelling around Tuscany and who want to enjoy the true feel of this region, and obviously who want to have the most fabulous restaurant on their doorstep!!.

  • Liked — The true feel of a Tuscan holiday, but not recommended for party people as it is in the middle of nowhere, but great access to drive to many interesting locations.
  • Disliked — Nothing, but other people with different requirements might think differently, like maybe they would like to stay there during the day and there is nothing to do, but that may suit some people.

This is a great place to stay for an authentic Tuscan experience - especially if you're looking for something that is not touristy. The apartment is in a converted grain loft on an organic farm near the town of Figline Valdarno (Tuscany - 25 min. by train from Florence). My husband and I had our wedding reception at the farm, guests stayed in the apartments. The whole thing was catered by Grazia Valleri - the petite but formidable matron of the house. Though it was several years ago, our mouths are still watering for the feast that we shared that evening (and our hearts for the beautiful tuscan setting we enjoyed and stayed in).

The apartment is down the hill from the Valleri family house, just next to the vineyard. The Valleris make their own wine, olive oil and raise free-range organic chickens (Grazia is an absolutely fabulous cook!). I have recently read good reviews of the place (2006) and I'm sure it's even better than when we stayed there several years ago. It is definitely not a high-end tuscan accomodation - but that's what we liked about it. It was comfortable, quiet, in a beautiful spot over looking the south tuscan hills, near a small town (Figline Valdarno) connected by rail to nearby Florence, Siena and Arezzo and the hospitality was phenomenal. You can walk to town or often catch a ride with a Valleri headed into or up from town. Meals can be eaten out, simple meals cooked in, or shared up at the farmhouse with the Valleri family - highly recommended for a real italian experience!
