Description: Established by a Swiss family, when Florence was still under the Medici Family, Gilli is the city’s oldest cafe – opened in 1733 as “Bottega dei Pani & dei Dolci” near the Duomo. It moved to Piazza della Repubblica in the early ‘90s, where it’s still located today, is the city’s only example of an Art Nouveaux style cafe. Over time, the business evolved according to the city’s transformations. In the mid-1800s it relocated from Via degli Speziali to its current location, on the same square as other historic venues, such as Caffe Paszkowski. It soon became a favorite of writers, artists, and actors from all over the world, and today is still the place where famous designers meet when in town to attend the Pitti Uomo fashion shows.

Like many places in Florence they are over priced and targeting the tourist. This is a great location and very nice furnishings and surroundings. However be prepared to pay for this!! As ever you'll be charged a cover charge just for sitting there of 6.00 euros. Standard costs of 5.50 for a Cappuccino or 4.50 for an Americano are pretty standard. We had a couple of omelets which were 13.00 euros a piece.
Overall brunch/lunch cost 51.00 euros!! £43.00 at 1.18!! So very expensive...

An old fashioned cafe where you can find a variety of desserts. But I especially recommend tiramisu. It was the best I tasted so far.

The place is a very nice looking old cafe with an antique decor, but the nice things stop here. The waitress that served us treated us as if we were an imposition and I agree with all other reviews that they are very unprofessional. Then one would expect a historical cafè to be expensive, but this is absolutely over the top. A tiny teapot of tea is 7 euros simply because is served in a silver teapot. I would recommend having the cheapest item on their menu to admire the interior and then move onto somewhere nicer since service is almost guaranteed to be awful.

Lovely cafe for a prosecco during walks in Florence, but inside, the fruit jellies are some of the best anywhere! Great pure fruit flavors!
