Awesome food, with no pretentiousness. Recommendations include the butter chicken, artichoke omelette, tortellini with sauce and the meringue cake with strawberries. Reservations is definitely a must.

Even the house wine is better than expected from the usual.

The service was very good and the restaurant has a down home feel that is lots of fun, if not pretty common, but the food was at best average.

This is Florence's oldest restaurant and online searches prior to the trip revealed must-order items:

totino di carciofi (artichoke omelet)
petto di pollo al burro (butter chicken)
bistecca alla Fiorentina (steak)
meringue alla fragile (a hardened meringue "cake" topped with strawberries)

and while there, we also decided on a basic pasta dish, a charcuterie plate and two bottles each of wine and water. Everything was very good to utterly delicious; the standouts for us were the charcuterie, steak, the simple pasta dish (adorned only with oil/butter and salt), the dessert.

We were seated at the table closest to the kitchen. There were two other young Italian men seated at our table (communal tables); they were in town on business and had also known about Sostanza/il Troia (they each had steak and split the same dessert). What set the steak apart was that it was simple and tastey (like everything else we had). Everything was delicious in its freshness and simplicity (but I think the charm of being in Italy kicks things up a notch or two). The dessert was very airy and melted/disappeared once in the mouth; the miniature strawberries also melted in the mouth (though not as sweet as local California versions, it was yummy nonetheless). All told, food & wine for three people fell somewhere between 120-160 Euro (I can't find my receipt & I don't remember).

The service was quick, efficient and friendly; most definitely a place I'd recommend and return to. This restaurant is small; reservations are essential.

The friendly staff and large amount of locals make this place a must in Florence. The chicken comes highly recommended and it is quite good (dip your bread in the leftover sauce for a real treat), I also liked the beef and the artichoke pie (a must!). There are only 2 seatings and you probably should call ahead (or have your hotel do so). You will be seated family style in a room filled with locals eating like true italians. You are in Italy so enjoy all 3 courses... the dessert might include some local wild strawberries that are truly a beautiful end to a fun experience.

2 seatings, 730pm and 9(or 930 I cant remember). Most Americans eat at the 7pm seating and more locals eat at the 9pm seating. Make a reservation for sure. You walk by early and you may get a peak of the staff playing cards while waiting for the doors to open. Keep this in mind, its not a 5 star facility like you may expect. Its old, small, and crowded but that is the beauty. No flare to boost the mood. Everything is about the food, the staff, and the people you sit next to. Its community seating by the way. I go to Florence a couple times a year and eat there at least twice everytime I go. Try the butter chicken and/or the artichoke pie (omlette/quiche). Its not a scarey neighborhood in fact not much in Florence is questionable. I always feel safe there. They remember me everytime I go and they even are ok if you ask to go in the (TINY) kitchen and take a picture with the chef. Now you have all fo the details, enjoy it.
