“Perfect stay in Firenze”
Reviewed 18 January 2012

This was our first time to stay at a Four Seasons property and we were not disappointed. As I understand this was a palace previously which has now been converted into this fantastic hotel. And Four Seasons have done a marvelous job in retro-fitting it, still leaving the old charm of the palazzo, but providing all modern creature comforts that one can possible expect.

We stayed in a Premier room overlooking the gardens (so often mentioned in reviews herein) and it was a decent size room, neither too small nor too big. The stand along bathtub with a window overlooking the gardens was also great.

Breakfast was standard buffet but with wide array of choices and for a stay of three nights, one can get by without being bored by the end of your stay. The freshly baked croissants (or briocches as they call it also) were too good to resist.

The location was good with the Duomo a decent 15 minute walk and the train station a further 5 minutes down. The Accademia which houses the famous David is within 10 minute walking distance.

All the staff were professional and warm at the same time.

Only two grouses - one internet is NOT free and also the experience with the porter when we checked in. Though we gave him a decent tip for lugging our 3 bags, he did utter a groan just loud enough so that we could hear it as he was leaving. We however felt that this singular incident is not reflective of the hotel or its staff in any way and hence the five star rating.

Room Tip: Rooms wih garden views at the back of the hotel

Although at the high end in cost terms this is a wonderful hotel in a city but with beautiful and large grounds so that you can escape from the noise and bustle of that city. The staff are welcoming and friendly yet professional. Stay there if you possibly can for a unique and memorable experience

From your first step into this remodeled Palazzo della Gherardesca, you will be in heaven!
This is the closest you will ever get to sleeping in a museum without the smothering feeling of
too, too much baroque decor. You see, this was once the villa of Pope Leo XI, his summer villa.
The rooms are spacious, the bathroom alone contains a double sink, huge shower with a rain
forest shower head, and a tub you can literally dance around without coming into contact with
the walls.
There is also a shuttle that will take you to the center of the city, a very helpful amenity.
The restaurant, Il Palagio serves a wonderful buffet breakfast with your hot entree prepared
specially. You may never wish to leave, you'll be so pampered.

The Four Seasons, Florence is one of the most gorgeous hotels I have ever stayed in.  Having stayed in many Four Seasons around the world, I was expecting the best.  Even with this expectation, I was blown away by the beauty and outstanding service at the Four Seasons Florence when I stayed here over Christmas this year.  The hotel is filled with amazing artwork including original frescoes.  One feels like they are in a palace.  It’s truly breath taking. The garden is absolutely stunning and there are little pathways and lookout points that make for a very romantic stroll. Bring your camera! The food at the restaurant was incredible.  Every meal was excellent. We had a seven course Christmas lunch in which everything was perfect.  Presentation, taste, and service were top notch.  Carolers sang to us accompanied by a violinist and pianist.  It was magical. Our suite was fantastic, equipped with everything one would expect from The Four Seasons with the addition of what was again, the most beautiful room.  Bright, high ceilings, stunning view of the garden.  The hotel is within walking distance from the Duomo.  In addition, there is a great restaurant on the same street as the hotel (Borgo Pinti) called La Giostra. We had a great meal here and would definitely recommend it if you choose to have a meal outside the hotel.   The best meal we had in Florence was actually with Giulio the Truffle Hunter.  The Four Seasons can help arrange this, but we actually found The Truffle Hunter on Trip Advisor and arranged for the experience on our own.  Best find ever! You must book a truffle hunting experience with Giulio! Wow! Even if you are not someone who appreciates truffles, the experience is well worth it.  Giulio picked us up and took us to his AMAZING home in the hills of Tuscany with a view that is TO DIE FOR.  Giulio’s partner, Christina is an incredible chef, and their truffle hunting dog, Eda is brilliant.  They made us feel right at home. Giulio and Christina are charming, lovely, kind, and extremely knowledgeable about the Tuscan region.  We learned so much! After a brief education about truffles, olive oil, and the Tuscan region over delicious truffle appetizers and olive oil tasting, we embarked on a truffle hunt (a lovely walk through the beautiful Tuscan hills) in which Eda the brilliant dog retrieved truffles for us that would be used in our lunch. Between the view from Giulio and Chrstina’s lovely home, Eda the dog, the fabulous meal, and Giulio and Christina’s wonderful company, the truffle hunting experience proved to be one of the highlights of our two week trip. It was a truly unique and memorable experience.  Coming back to the Four Seasons at the end of one’s day or even after a stroll in Florence is such a treat and I highly recommend this property. I also wanted to add that Christmas is an amazing time to be in Florence. It wasn’t terribly cold, and it also wasn’t crowded! The streets are lined with gorgeous lights and it  and the Four Seasons is decorated so beautifully and tastefully. Yes, it is expensive, but in my opinion, well worth it.

It was an excellent stay in Firenze. The food is excellent, the rooms are well decorated and comfortable, there is a private garden and the situation is perfect, not far from the centre of Firenze. The staff is perfect too.

Without question, the Four Seasons Hotel in Florence raises the bar for an exceptional luxurious experience. DOGS ARE WELCOME!
Where do I start?

1) The Concierge services
We used as soon as I made the reservation. They were asked to do the impossible many times and always came through.
In terms of visiting parts of galleries and museums that even our most noted art historian friends have never seen.
The Concierge Desk provided guides with PhD's in Renaissance Art from top universities: they were informed, communicated well in English, were fun, friendly, and exceptionally helpful. It was like being with a good friend who happened to know about all the history and art. We speak English and my son speaks 6 languages - the guides could converse with him in all the European ones.

2) The facility
The hotel is an absolutely priceless property within the old city walls of Florence. It is one of the Medicci palaces that has been meticulously restored. Original frescoes are on many of the walls. The gardens are spectacular. There is no amount of fee the owner could ever charge for the rooms to recapture the investment. This is a work of personal passion and by someone for whom ONLY the best would do. There is no way each and every detail of perfection can be described - it must be experienced. That said, I am attaching some photos that are NOT photoshopped, cropped or altered in ANY way. If the room where guests can check email is not the MOST BEAUTIFUL you've ever seen, I want to know where you've been (check my photos - it's the one with all the frescoes of angels, etc).

3) The food
Amazing. When available, the chef will prepare a pasta dish (on special request) with white truffles sauteed in olive oil. The truffles are generous - not just one small slice so they can call it a white truffle dish. See photo. There is a chicken dish where they cook a young hen between hot bricks. The sauce is also divine. It is served with the freshest spinach. The potatoes are expertly done. The poached eggs are beyond belief.

4) The workout area
Only the finest equipment in the world is in the workout area, a separate building in the lush gardens. If you are someone who works out with a trainer, one can be provided. The entire facility is as sterile as a Swiss hospital. An abundance of robes, towels, slippers, ammenities, etc. are provided. The steam room and showers are generously sized. Water and fruit is available at all times. This facility, along with the Spa Services (next on the list) are reason enough to come here and never leave the property. It is an excellent substitution for the overpriced "lettuce & water& back to basics" spas in the US.

5) The Spa services
Perhaps the best massage (or at least equal to those at Ten Thousand Waves Thai Massages) I've ever experienced. Amazing that a therapist who appeared to be so young was as expert as she was. My son, who runs marathons and is a real athlete, also had a massage and rated it among the best. There is every possible facial or body treatment anyone would ever want, and if you are a guest, they seem to be able to work you in at your request. The atmosphere is relaxing and the scents are esprcially created for them by the famous Officina Profumo Farmaceutica Santa Maria Novella here in Florence.

6) The guest rooms
Perfectly designed with huge bathrooms and at least 12' ceilings. The sheets appear to be Pratesi, but do not have a label. They are very nice, as are the pillows. Of course, The Four Seasons Hotels are noted for their beds and so I won't say more about how divine the sleep is. Light fixtures are easily turned on & off, the lighting is good for reading and can be dimmed for relaxation. Our room has a beautiful fixture from Murano - probably at a cost that exceeds that of a car. We have French windows that open to a French balcony overlooking a garden. (See photos) We hear absolutely no noises in the hotel or on the outside when our windows/doors are closed. Every possible detail that the guest would need is provided.

7) The gardens
To have acres of lushly landscaped grounds in the city of Florence is about as rare as it gets. These grounds are maintained by someone who must have come from the Fountainbleu School of Landscape Design. Additionally, some modern sculpture has been placed around the grounds and it has been so expertly done that it mixes seamlessly with the ancient grotto and sculptures that are centuries old. Private parties (for two, as an example) can be arranged in any of the romantic and secluded areas within the garden.

8) The staff
Overall, the staff is exceptional. Absolutely exceptional. For anyone who has ever managed people, it is a humble experience to see how totally well trained, efficient and professional each and every member of the staff is. They are welcoming, charming, and SINCERE in wanting to be of assistance and do their best for you, as a guest. Whatever the management is doing at this location of the Four Seasons, it is working. Among all the Four Seasons I've visited, none come close to the service here.

9) Emergency situations you hope you will not have
We all hope there will not be an emergency medical situation when we travel. However, it happens and unfortunately, it happened to us. My husband has a serious condition that we thought was under control. It became close to an emergency about ten days into our visit. The hotel arranged for a doctor to visit the room (within 30 min.!), and on two different nights, found a pharmacy that was open at 3am and sent someone to get a prescription and deliver it to our room. Additionally, they explored a variety of ways to transport my husband back to the US. They really did the impossible.

As positive as I have tried to be in this write up, there simply is no way to describe the entire experience of being a guest at The Four Seasons Hotel in Florence. We tested every aspect of what they offer and they exceeded in every area.

If you read my reviews, you will find that I do not like to pay for things that are of little value. This hotel is worth every cent you will pay. In fact, just money will never buy the experience of being at The Four Seasons Florence; it is the effort of the hearts and souls of people who appreciate the very best and want to share it with you that you will get when you are here.

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms.
