Owner description: This is not your usual football match, this rough and ready match dates back to the 16th century, and is held in a sand-filled piazza in front of the Santa Croce church. Players wear medieval-style costumes and can punch, kick and elbow their way toward to the goal. The match is played on the feast day of Florence’s patron saint, Saint John the Baptist.

Whether you get tickets or not to the games themselves this is an excellent time to be in Florence. That’s because there are a large number medieval pageants and events surrounding the games that you can easily run into for free whilst exploring the city. But if you can get hold of tickets to the games you won’t be disappointed. I can only describe it as a combo of football, rugby and wrestling, whereby attacking players attempt to score ‘goals’ in the opposition’s end of the pitch whilst defending players wrestle each other. It’s brutal, and the team that usually wins is the one that has incurred the least injuries.

I have visited it last year. It is very funny to see all these dressed men with their colorful old time costumes. There is a lot of music and joy.
I felt like being in another century.

I remember the first game of historic soccer did not even get a chance to finish because too many of the players were sent to the hospital! It was rdiculous and I thought the whole was quite silly but today I saw the parade and pagentry associated with it and see it has come a long way from the blood sport it most likely was in the meideval days. I enjoyed watchong the processions. Did not see the games.
