“A real gem”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

I spent a week at Pensione Bencista during August. I can't rate it highly enough. I was looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday and this fitted the bill perfectly. The family that run the hotel and their staff were all extremely friendly and very attentive to the needs of the guests. The hotel is furnished in keeping with the rustic Italian style of the building, and both my room and bathroom were spotlessly clean, with a daily cleaning service. The food was simple, but well cooked, tasty and very good value. As for the views over Florence, they are stunning and made breakfast and dinner on the terrace a sheer delight. I loved my stay and will certainly return. Pensione Bencista is a real gem, and a secret I'd really prefer to keep to myself!

Having stayed at the Pensione Benicista in Apr 13 whilst looking at wedding venues in Fiesole, we booked rooms for our guests to stay here for our wedding in Sept 13 as it was perfect for what we were looking for. The family that run the hotel are so helpful and are really friendly.

The rooms are rustic so don't expect modern furnishings with TV's. Why would you want to watch TV when you have such a stunning view from the terrace with a glass of wine!

Location is great if you want to be outside of Florence although i would recommend having a car or getting taxi's as the hills and roads close to the hotel are not for walking.

We just spent the night at this wonderful Pensione right outside of Florence and really enjoyed our stay. They kindly accepted our large dog free of an extra service charge too! The room was quite expensive though. They said it was HIGH SEASON…€175, + tax for a double room with a view of Florence.
The hotel was a step back into time. The only this that was disappointing was the cleaning service which started at 9 a.m. with moving the furniture in the room above ours, vacuuming and talking loudly. They were quite loud and woke us up! Cleaning services should start later as to not wake the clients who are on vacation.

Room Tip: Room number 10 was great, but the room above it would be better so you don't have to listen to t...

Our family stayed for three nights. The staff and service was excellent, the continental breakfasts got our day started right and the dinners were simple, tasty and great value. The views of Florence and the surrounding hills are to die for. Easy walk to the bus stop that takes you right into the center of Florence. I agree with the more detailed written review by "noteworth".

Yes, the views are nice. Yes, it's far off the noise centre of Florence. However, I felt super uncomfortable there. I am 30 and do not want to be seated on a round table with strangers at dinner. The owners look at you a strange way if you travel alone. The rooms are full of heavy, dark, old furniture - it's a matter of taste, I think this style might appeal to pensioners and retired people.

A friend of mine stayed there because it is close to the European University Institute. One evening he wanted to play the piano (italian ballads) and was soon shut down by the owners who told him they do not want other guests to complain about this 'noise' on tripadvisor. How cold and unwelcoming is that. He was hurt.

Dear Guest,
we are very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us.
Bencistà is a family owned and run “pensione” where our guests are meant to feel at home, this to us is the most important thing.
Regarding your personal experience, we welcome travelers of all ages, singles, couples and families from around the world.
Obviously ,we also regret your friend’s experience. With a piano at our guests disposal, we very much welcome concert evenings, however for the peace of all, after ten o’clock Music cannot be imposed on the other guests.
Sorry again for all inconvenience

We stayed for 4 nights and was impressed from day one but didn't want to leave by the last day. The 3 course meal provided is fantastic quality and value for money. The service and family involvement is very impressive and commendable.

Room Tip: Every room has a view and whether it's of Florence or the countryside is still a great view comp...

As others have noted, the Pensione Bencista may not be for everyone, but it certainly suited me. It is a large, beautiful, old-fashioned villa run by a friendly family who have been running it for a long time. Its location, on the hill above San Domenico and below Fiesole, is its great beauty. The view from the terrace is breathtaking - once settled there, I felt no need for further entertainment. The changing light over Florence is delightful to watch in the mornings and evenings. There is no TV, no radio, no music (hooray). There are several very nice sitting-rooms, though for some curious reason these were almost always empty when I was there. For younger visitors looking for 'the action', the ambience may be a little calm. It's a steep climb to the main road to get the no 7 bus up to Fiesole or into Florence.

The dinner served to pensione guests is simple home cooking - typically a soup or pasta followed by roast meat with potatoes, a side vegetable such as roasted peppers, french beans or fennel, and some lettuce salad. Fruit, cheese (pecorino or gorgonzola), or a piece of tart are offered for dessert. On good days the cooking was perfectly nice, though sometimes its plainness slipped into something a bit too ordinary. It's not gourmet cuisine and has no pretensions to be so. I did occasionally see people ordering something more sophisticated which wasn't on the menu offered to regular guests, so perhaps some variety is possible if you ask. I was content with the dinners because it was so lovely to sit on the terrace watching the swifts zoom about overhead as the shadows lengthened, the sun set over the hills and the twinkling lights came on in Florence and all the distant villages.

Room Tip: Room facing south have a great view over Florence - but I heard that other rooms had pleasant views...
