My husband and I had dinner in the courtyard at Locanda Vigna Ilaria whilst also staying at the Inn. The food was incredibly fresh, tasty and interesting. The bread was beautiful, and beef heart starter, seafood pasta and sucking pig were cooked to perfection. We had a fab bottle of local, organic wine recommended to us at only 22€. Overall, the service was very impressive, unobtrusive but there just when you need them... brilliant. Andrea, the host, was utterly charming as was his young family. It is a small courtyard seating around 30, and it was clearly popular amongst the wealthy locals living in the area as well as people like us on a Tuscan roadtrip. We thought the atmosphere was very special, more like we had happened upon a relaxed, Italian family enjoying their food together than a tourist trap.

This restaurant is not in the main town, but take the time to go there and you will not be disappointed. Attentive, multi lingual staff do everything to make your experience there enjoyable, informed and relaxed. Attention to detail is what made this restaurant stand out for me - from the many lovely places I visited this trip.
Seafood is what they do - and they do it well. Anchovies to start set this restaurant in another league for me - and were the reason I did not go for chef's choice, which has been highly recommended by others.
Dessert was chosen for me - not sure how or why, but a delicious raspberry mousse cup appeared and was happily devoured!
Beautiful setting outside, under the trees, just makes your evening complete!
Andare e buon appetito!

This restaurant about 10 minutes drive outside of Lucca is worth a visit to the city by itself. Locally sourced seafood, prepared to perfection in a variety of ways, great service and a very serene location makes this an extraordinary restaurant. We can recommend following the suggestions by the chef and let him do his magic, take the menu as guide, but expect to be positively surprised when going for the daily specialities. When the bill came we had another, positive surprise. The restaurant delivers great value, and it's a pleasure to see that places like this still exist where great food and service does not mean being overcharged.

Host Andrea Massi works hard at making this a destination restaurant and largely succeeds, although he seems a bit over worked as he also operates the del Teatro restaurant in central Lucca.

The emphasis is particularly on fresh local fish and produce, but the meat is locally sourced and never frozen as well. Dining outdoors in the courtyard is particularly pleasant in good weather.

The English translations of the menu are poorly done and quite confusing so table after table had to have things explained to them in great detail in English which was also somewhat confusing at times. Andrea speaks excellent German, but German guests had to use English to communicate with the rest of the waitstaff.

There is an English reference to "slow food" on the cover of the menu but no real explanation of how they mean it. Service is very leisurely, that is for sure. They pour gratis prosecco (sparkling wine) at all tables when you sit down, which may be why it can take 10 or 15 minutes for a bottle of ordered wine to arrive, sometimes after a course or two. They bring little gratis plates of soup or other items somewhat randomly, it seems. All good, but a bit confusing as well when a soup shows up you weren't expecting. The wines were good, but quite pricey compared to elsewhere in Tuscany it seemed.

The food was generally lovely, but the other odd quirks kept the place from being excellent. Still, if you want very good food, specially prepared to bring out the best in the ingredients and have the evening to invest in the meal, you probably can't do much better than here. The local wild greens salad with wildflower accents was stunning.

Out in the country a bit, you'll want a GPS, a large scale map, or excellent directions to drive here the first time.
