This is definitely a must-do in Lucca. The panoramic view of the town and surrounding countryside are incredible. Large planter-boxes containing the famous trees, which allegedly were previously used to plant vegetables, provide a glimpse into the resourcefulness of the Lucchesi during the middle ages. It was slightly crowded at the top when were there, so one had to be a little patient in waiting to take photos from all directions, though most visitors understood that others were waiting and the progress around was fairly quick. My brother, who suffers from vertigo, was unable to make it to the top, so he spent quite a bit of time looking at the medieval-style paintings displayed on the interior of the tower and pointed out numerous interesting features as we made our way back down the tower. Fun and easy.
