We just stayed at the Ilaria for a week, the location is great, inside the walls within walking distance of the rest of the town. The rooms were excellent, ours was in a new annex and it felt as though we were the first guests, we had upgraded to a superior room, we had a mezzanine floor with a table by the window which was in the medieval tower, and we had a small kitchen in a cupboard with a 2 ring hob, fridge, sink and crockery, so we could have made meals if we had wanted to. The breakfasts were a very good standard and you could eat in the dining area or out on the roof top terrace, lovely. There are free drinks all day until 7pm and free bikes to use to cycle around the walls. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and I would definitely stay there again

Room Tip: Twin room in the new annex has a small fully operational kitchen.

Just spent a week at the Ilaria in Lucca; it was such comfortable place, with great breakfast, efficient and discreet housekeeping services and ideal location but it was the sunny attitude of the staff which has ensured our return.

Thank you : we will be back

The staff at Hotel Ilaria were part of the reason we fell in love with Lucca (we named our son after the city!). We stayed three nights and were upset that we had to leave. The entire group at the front desk were welcoming, friendly, and helpful. They gave great tips on where to eat, what to do and even helped with first aid when my husband cut his hand.

The rooms were very clean, spacious and comfortable. The hotel is in a great location, just a minute or two walk to the city center but far enough removed so it's perfectly quiet.

Another perk....free bikes (which are a great way to roam around the city and along the wall).

Room Tip: Don't pass up the free bike rentals.

We stayed at the Hotel Ilaria for 11 happy nights at the beginning of August. On arrival, we were tired and hot and in need of a smiling face after our poor navigation of the unfamiliar streets! The welcome at reception was a bit disappointing after spending time in a lovely hotel in Florence where the staff were always friendly and helpful. We later realised that we were just unlucky that day because the rest of the staff we met were lovely and always happy to help. We got the wrong guy!
We loved our stay in Lucca and at the Ilaria. The hotel is very generous. There is a cafe that is open until 7pm every day and you have access to free soft drinks and beer, hot drinks, biscuits and pastries etc. Outside the lift at reception, there is a big bowl filled with juicy apples every day, such a nice touch. Generally, people were not greedy either so there always seemed to be plenty to go around!
We took advantage of the loan of peddle bikes during our stay. Free  It is busy in Lucca with bikes around the streets and on the road around the walls but, if you venture out, there is a beautiful river not far from the town. You can ride your bike the full length of the river on both sides and the view is incredible. Beside the train station there is an excellent tourist information office.
The room we had looked out on to the main thoroughfare by the side of the hotel but the view was a little restricted with only a small window. Some rooms open directly on to the terrace with ceiling to floor windows so it is worth enquiring about your room options if you want the best views or have a preference. Otherwise, the room itself was clean, cool and comfortable but the walls are paper thin and hearing other guests going to the toilet wasn’t great. We did hear a guest complaining at reception that she could not get English TV programmes!!! If you care about this, you might want to check!
The breakfast on the terrace is great. There is such a relaxed atmosphere because it is not formal or stuffy. There is plenty to eat. We are vegetarians and had no problem with choice. There is hot and cold food available. The strawberries were so good! It was never too busy either which was nice.
The terrace is surrounded by beautiful trees and potted plants. There is a Jacuzzi and some sun loungers. It is a shame that there isn’t really enough room for more sun loungers because some guests dominated the terrace space and it spoiled it a bit for us. If you get the chance to enjoy the terrace when people around you are quite, it is a very relaxing place and all you hear is bird song. Maybe we were just unlucky the last week of our stay when it was noisy. There are so many good points about this hotel so you can shrug off the little irritations anyway.
Speaking of little irritations – as other reviewers have said – we found the wi-fi connection totally useless!
The location of the hotel is really good. Train and bus station are both not far way. You can travel to Pisa and Viareggio within 30 minutes. Apparently, there is a bus that runs directly to Pisa airport and it is far eaiser than the train or the 70 euros transfer charge (the transfer charge offered by the hotel was at a discounted rate for guests!!). We got a much better deal with a taxi driver.
