“Perfect place to stay in Lucca”
Reviewed 10 July 2009

This was just ideal. Location was perfect - 30 second walk from two lovely squares. Very quiet location, wonderful helpful staff who spoke great English. Nothing was a problem. Could not fault the room with its fabulous shower. All the other guests were equally happy. Incredible value.

My wife and I were here in June 2009 for 6 nights. The hotel is perfectly charming. The staff is wonderful and helpful. Located inside the walls, you are close to everything. Very close to train and bus stations. Bicycle rental very close. They have a wonderful breakfast buffet. Plenty and delicious. We walked everywhere, and rented bikes two times. Very clean with private bath and safe. We used Lucca as our base and traveled from there. Cinque Terre, Florence. We would stay here again. Places to shop, eat, and see all over Lucca. Great pizza too!

A great little place to stay and such friendly owners! A brightly painted bedroom and a psychedelic bathroom both with cute shutter windows set the scene!

Delicious breakfast on the terrace at front under the market umbrellas. Two days was enough to have a good taste of this cute, pretty little town with its many eateries and quaint cobbled streets.

The owners said that they originally came for a holiday but fell in love with the place (Lucca) and came back for good! That is how we feel, like coming back for more!

We stayed at Albergo San MArtino Hotel for 4 nights and there was nothing that could make us complain for.The staff coudn't be more gentle and helpful with us and their permanent smile on their faces can't be forgotten. The breakfast was made up of a great variety of things to eat and drink and the room was brightly clean since the day we arrived to the day left. The hotel is also located at an area not far away from any you can do or see in Lucca,so we definately recommend it!

My wife and I booked the Albergo San Martino on the strength of earlier Trip Advisor entries. The first night we had a comfortable room on the first (American second) floor. It had been repainted in bright colors of what might be called the Italian modern. The second through fourth nights, we were offered a new room that was added last winter (note an earlier post about noise--the renovations were over the course of last autumn and winter. Basically the hotel expanded into an adjacent building. We didn't see the new rooms on the upper floors, but our ground floor room was huge and very comfortable. One wrinkle--the wifi that is operational in the original hotel seems not to work in the new rooms, so I would take my computer to either the dining area or to a lounge for internet access.

Breakfast was served from 8 to 10:30. Based only on the gracious and accommodating nature of the staff, especially Alessia, I suspect one might be able to get a coffee earlier if one were departing on an early train. But if not, there's a cafe at the train station.
Breakfast offered an array of meats and cheese, yoghurt, cereal, rolls and bread for toasting. Orange and grapefruit juice and water were availalbe; and a large pot of coffee and another of warm milk were there for caffe lattes. Capoccini could be ordered, and my wife found all options for caffe decafinatta.

The location is great; a short walk from the train station--two blocks to the west, then through St. Peter's Gate then a block to the right, then left 2 blocks. For the visitor equipped with heavy luggage, taxis are available. The hotel is a short distance from the Cathedral, San Martino (where the famous Tintoretto Last Supper is on view--as well as the Cathedral Musuem, and San Giovanni, which has fascinating archaeological excavations open (on ticket with the museum), and just about every night a short musical perofrmance of music of Puccini and Mozart. In the other direction, a short walk through a graffiti filled, but otherwise unthreatening (see earlier post) passage, brings one to the Gigli Theater and an open piazza leading into Piazza Napoleone. Lucca is a very walkab le town, no breathrobbing climbs--except for the towers--and across the town is a short distance; you can make it longer by walking the delightful, shaded wall.

Albergo San Martino is simply great. Visitors from Germany, France, Switzerland and the US were in town for art and history, for cycling around Northwestern Tuscany and for shopping--a lot of interesting stores along Via Fillelongo, about four blocks away. And, to reiterate the point, the staff, I think particularly of Alessia, but all were very kind and very attentive, made our visit truly memorable. Now we have to figure out how to go back as soon as possible.

My friend and I were pretty disappointed with our stay here mid October. We booked from the car early in the day -- and were charged 120 euro per night for two nights for a very small room. We could have coped with that but the racket in the morning was miserable. The walls must be paper thin. From around 7am both mornings we could hear the housekeepers sliding doors to the (moveable) linen closet back and forth. We could here the toilets, the showers, and the housekeepers' chatter. Add to that noise from the street below (well, it is Italy, I hear you say) and it was really unpleasant. Worst of all was when that when we mentioned the internal noise to staff, they disputed what we were saying. No apology, just really dismissive. Very disappointing and very different from the rest of our experience in Italy.

Like many of the reviewers here, I think the hotel is cute and agree that it is in a convenient location (and Lucca itself is a dream!). Decor in the room was nice enough. But I would not recommend this hotel.
