Hotel Palazzo Alexander

Reviewed 27 April 2014

The Palazzo Alexander is a beautiful small hotel inside the walled city of Lucca.
Our room was large, comfortable and clean, with period furniture in keeping with the general style of the hotel. The available storage might be a little limited for an extended stay, but was fine for the four days we were there. Room-safes are provided, but remember to ask at reception for a key. The room keys themselves are on huge, heavy key-fobs, so it's easier to leave them at reception when going out and reception is manned 24 hours per day.
Breakfast was typical continental fare and the staff were always on hand to make sure that everything was to our liking. In fact the staff were excellent throughout our stay and offered good advice on what to see, where to eat, etc.
Old Lucca is a very compact city and virtually anywhere can be reached within a fifteen minute walk, though the narrow maze of streets can take a day or two to get used to - but it is a very pleasant location to get lost in and generally results in you finding the odd hidden gem of a restaurant or wine bar that you would otherwise have missed.

Room Tip: Rather than being numbered, the rooms are named after Puccini operas so remember to pay attention!

We were really looking forward to staying at this hotel after reading all the great reviews but unfortunately came away slightly disappointed based on same. Pros: The Hotel is full of charm and character and the location is superb in beautiful Lucca. The rooms were spacious and very clean with comfortable beds and pillows.

You can get a bus to Pisa airport for 3 euros and the bus stop is only 5 minutes walk away, the journey takes about 45 minutes. You can also walk to the hotel from the main railway station in under 20 minutes. The staff were all very helpful at all times and we could not fault them, but this is what one would expect from it's 4 star standard and room rates.

Cons: Noise does travel a lot between floors which would certainly interrupt any light sleepers, but this is an old historic hotel and nothing can be done about this but it still should be noted.

Breakfast: For us the major let down was the basic breakfast offered. What was on offer was very sparse compared to other Italian/European hotels we have stayed in. In my opinion major improvements could be made in this area which is reflected in my rating !

So happy we stayed at this cosy little hotel with heaps of atmosphere. From the minute we stepped in the door we were made to feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We felt really comfortable. The rooms are spacious, clean and fresh. There was so much choice at breakfast and served by the Manager. The hotel is situated and easy walk from the station and close to all amenities and shopping and within the walls of the old town of Lucca. Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend. Loved the hotel and all the staff.

Wonderful small hotel, elegantly furnished. It is well situated a few minutes from the main shops and a 10 minutes walk from the railway station. The service was excellent. Our flight to Pisa was diverted to Bologna because of fog and we arrived at the hotel at 05.00 in the morning but nothing was too much trouble. The beds were very comfortable, the hotel was clean and the breakfasts very good. Above all Mario and his staff could not do enough for us. Can't wait to go back...

Small hotel with wonderful antique character and very hospitable hosts/staff. Booked a single room but was given a double room with an amazing comfy bed. Extremely well located just inside the city walls and only 5 mins walk from the main tourist information office. The breakfast was excellent - the best I have ever had in Italy.

This ancient building, rises on four floors and the rooms on the top give you breathtaking sigh over Lucca's tiled rooftops. Clean, quiet and vary spacious, offers a good breakfast taken care directly by the owner who's happy to help out on any question or arrangement you'r looking for in town.

Room Tip: The junior suite has a balcony with table and chairs, offering a unique rooftop view.

Greeted by the owner Mario we were escorted to our rooms. Bright and Luchese elegant. There is wifi in the main lobby and a small bar. There is parking for the guests at an additional small fee.
The service is gracious and not pushy. There is a full buffet in the am. The staff is willing and able and extremely knowledgeable to suggest area restaurants in the walls and outside the walls.
We have returned and so do many of our friends. Not a better place to stay.
