“Lovely place.”
Reviewed 14 September 2013

We had a wonderful visit here in August for one week. We stayed in Arcangelo which was spaceous, bright and clean - I loved the mix of old furniture. The pool was really lovely, and the grounds were well kept. There were fabulous views over the hills and my husband enjoyed many cycles in the surrounding countryside. Lucca itself is wonderful, nice restaurants, shops and of course walks on the wall! If there was one negative it was a lack of mosquito nets/coverings on all the windows which meant we had to close the windows at night to avoid being bitten and it was quite warm as a result. Overall would return though as everything else was near perfect!

I brought my family to Fattoria Maionchi for a wine tour and tasting and everything was wonderful. Nicola, the owner and a great host, showed us the property where he grew up, explaining every detail of the history of the villa, winery and surrounding area. The tour continued in the cellar where, upon opening the gate, it's like entering a time machine. Everything from the mold on the walls to the old barrels and the winemaking tools transports guests back centuries and every single detail is a witness of the history that has passed through this property.
The tour finished in the tasting room where we first tried a wonderful extra-virgin olive oil and then five wines: a white, three reds and a Vin Santo (dessert wine) paired with crostini, cheese, salumi and cantucci (cookies).
It's impossible not to leave a five star review when everybody falls in love with this special place.

Villa and Fattoria Maionchi are located in the most beautiful place around Lucca - Colline Lucchese (Lucca Hills). The view rom the estate is really stunning. It is exactly what is always depicted in the ad leaflets: hills, vineyards, olives groves, red ceramic roofs etc, you name it.

Tofori (the name of the tiny village where fattoria is located) is about 5 mi drive from the via Pesciatina, one of the main outlet drives of Lucca. It will take you 10-15 min to reach the famous Lucca walls.

Fattoria is very good for those who is ready to forgive some shabbiness of the rooms in exchange for a chance to stay in real Toscana. Old house, old furniture, beautiful, breathtaking view indeed, fresh air, silky breeze when you have an after lunch nap - open your bedroom window in a hot afternoon, and the breeze will carefully caress you. You can only get it in Toscana.

We were staying in the double bedroom apartment with all necessary amenities: kitchen (fully equipped, living room with TV-set, bathroom.

The hosts serve real Toscan dinner once a week. Do not miss it but be careful, it is very ample.

Took a day-trip and received a lot more than expected. The tour (given by the owner) is fantastic. The wines delicious, and the crustini's with cheese, salami, and olive oil an added bonus. The family home dates to 1500, and the family has owned it ever since. Passed from generation to generation. Not far from Pissa with, beautiful Tuscany region scenery.

I cannot recommend the Fattoria highly enough with such a beautiful setting in the Luccese countryside. On arrival the view from our rustic apartment took my breath away. The accommodation was well equipped, spotlessly clean and very spacious. The bathroom was modernised with a fantastic huge shower. Our pool was clean, warm and lots of fun.

We were accompanied by our three teenagers who enjoyed our relaxing haven ( with a couple of Florence and Lucca designer shopping trips for added excitement!)

The highlight of our week was definitely our three meals in the residences excellent restaurant. Top class food, fantastic surroundings, wonderful wine with great service.

The only concern I could possibly point out is to be prepared for the hair raising winding road to the Fattoria - however it's most definitely worth the effort.

As per previous reviews the place is quite hard to find the first time if your not used to Italy and its signposts..but after that it is a breeze!

We stayed in one of the Tralci's, the building is beautiful and old and is well.. rustic but this adds to its charm!

The pool is a god send and much needed during the afternoons, it is very private and we virtually had it to ourselves the whole stay!

We did not eat in the restaurant until our last night and this was our only regret as the food was delicious and very reasonable, the white wine is also lovely and if you want to take some back then they will box it all up for you (which we did!)

Our only grumble was the mossies - nightmare, but if you are prepared (unlike we were) and buy the plug in deterrents then you will be fine.

Lucca, Pisa, Florence are all easy to get to and worth spending a whole day to appreciate the atmosphere, the food and the lovely freindly people!

We also spent most afternoons in Pescia, where we indulged in real italian ice cream, wine and people watching!

I would recommend this place and Toscana to anyone as it has everything you could possibly want..culture,great food, great wines, plenty of gorgeous hills to cycle/run around for the more active, great accomodation and lastly the people are so friendly the locals could not do anymore for us!!

Oh as a last note, we do not have children but there were other families staying at Fattoria Maionchi and they seemed to be having a great time also judging by all the of laughter....or was that just us?!!

  • Liked — The breath taking views, lovely private pool and fantastic food and wines!
  • Disliked — The mozzie inhabitants!

We had great expectations before our stay, but after our stay we are disapointed.

When we arrived there was no reception. A women from the restaurant just gave us the keys of the appartment and that was it. No introduction. She didn't even guide us around the apartment and told us how everything worked in the appartment. She didn't pointed us to switch of the boiler so we didn't directly had warm water to shower in the evening.

We didn't even had to fill in the notification/registration for the authorities that we were staying as guests at Fattoria Maionchi.

We stayed five days (four nights) in the apartment and there was no cleaning in this period of the bathroom, toilet and also no clean sheets on the bed or clean towels. We were lucky to stay with the two of us in a four people apartment, therefor we could use the two unused towels.

There were no springs under the mattress, only a self-made wooden board. This wasn't very comfortable.

The furniture of the appartment is very old, dark brown and sticky.

There is also a restaurant below the apartments. The food of this restaurant is very good, the staff is very friendly and i will recoment you to eat there, but... as told the apartments are above the restaurant. In the evening we had quite some annoyance of the guests from the restaurants, which stood outside the restaurant and talked real loud with each others.

However Toscane is great, Lucca is beautiful. We had a wonderful vacation and we will return to Tuscany in the future, but we won't stay again at Fattoria Maionchi.
