My husband and I were planning a trip to Italy and wanted to visit Lucca as we are opera lovers and learned that Puccini was born there. When discussing our holiday with friends at home before leaving, they told us they had been to Lucca and stayed at La Boheme and had enjoyed it. So based on their recommendation we, too, stayed there. Unfortunately we were in for a surprise. The steps leading up to the floor on which the place is were in the dark. Easy to fall. But prior to this we had to ring the bell to enter the building without success. No one answered so we went and had a coffee around the corner, returning half an hour later to get the same response - no reply. Eventually after being in the vicinity for over an hour the door was opened. By this time we were close to going elsewhere. The woman who admitted us - I recall her name as being Shara - not sure - was extremely unwelcoming. She was cold and officious and gave the impression she was doing us a huge favour. The room we were in was pretty average, the shower being slow and water not very hot. My husband was going to complain but when he approached the owner she looked at him as if he was an alien, so we kept quiet. Thank goodness we only stayed there two days. Nothing would entice us back. But we had to tell our friends we enjoyed it as they had suggested we go there in the first place. We have subsequently revisited Lucca and stayed in another bed and breakfast which was a thousand times better, were made to feel at home, and died not cost us as much as La Boheme had.
