An ancient cathedral with a vintage architectural view, nothing short of beautiful but nothing so great about it too.
Once you walk in through the walls of the old town you can follow the directions to the Duomo as well as the Bell tower.

This Duomo has a lovely marble facade with interesting carvings and decoration on the external columns and walls which you could easily miss if you just quickly walk inside.
There is a lovely chapel inside that houses Lucca' beloved crucifix (the Volto Santo).

An marble made old church.Interesting facade, with a lot of columns disposed in 3 superposed rows.Right next to the Duomo rises a crenellated bell-tower,pretty high. The highlight of the cathedral seems to be the Volto Santo ("Holy Face") of Lucca, a large wooden crucifix.

This Duomo was a little tucked away but well worth a visit. The interior isn't quite up to the splendour of some of the other Duomo's in the region but its well worth a visit particularly for those interested in history and old architecture, as a lot of the older footings and structures are exposed for viewing.
Buy a joint ticket for the Duomo and the Santi Giovanni e Reparata. .

Every important town in Italy has a Duomo; the main church. In Lucca it's San Martino. One should always check out the Duomo of each town/city. The Duomo of Lucca is in a beautiful open square. The facade is lovely and picturesque. I can't say the interior is very beautiful, but it does need to be seen if you're going to visit the town. Also, the museum/church of San Giovanni which is about a block up with your back to San Martino is interesting to visit because it's a museum church where you could actually see excavations and the 'street' people walked on back in Roman times. Concerts are also held in San Giovanni; tickets are usually available. Check it out.
