My boyfriend's parents (in their 50s) stayed here during our trip through Italy, so I write this partly on their behalf.

The hotel was very nice. located within the city walls but driving there is a hassle. They do have a private garage, but we angered more than a few locals trying to drive through the tiny streets. It's a small, tight garage, where fitting in cars is a bit of a puzzle so not the best if you're planning on using your car on a daily basis. We left the car in the garage during our whole stay. Their room was nice and roomy - though on the second floor next to the breakfast area, so not the best if you like to sleep in.

The staff here was incredibly nice and helpful! Even though my boyfriend and I were staying at a cheaper hostel across town, they had no problem with us coming in and out throughout the day, and hanging out in the breakfast area. Everyone was always friendly. They also helped us locate a small town outside of Lucca where my bf's grandfather was born, and arranged our transportation, as the town wasn't on any maps we had. Staff had wonderful restaurant recommendations as well.

These people give Italy a bad name. What you get for 130 euros in late October is an average room and if you want to park, its another 15 euros. It gets better - they charge 18 euros for breakfast which consists of not more than the usual coffee, rolls, and pastries. I went to breakfast in the morning thinking it was included (which is customary in Italian hotels) only to find out at check-out that I got socked with the charge. Not very customer focused. I was so angry when I left their establishment that I never wanted to set foot in Lucca again, which is too bad.

This is a bed and breakfast, as other reviewers have pointed out. The desk staff was very helpful and friendly. The room was spacious and reasonably quiet at night. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. You must note that the breakfast is an extra charge and I found it more appealing to go out for something to eat in the morning, although not necessarily more economical!
The audio tour that the tourist information office offers for 9 euro was a good introduction to the city and its sights.

This pension is owned by the same family that owns and runs La Luna....you've seen the good reviews for La Luna, I can tell you that they have brought the same dedication to service to Alla
Dimora Lucense. The rooms are good sized with nice furnishings and roomy bathrooms. The breakfasts were nice, but the real difference was the individualized attention shown us by the management. Whenever we wanted help with a problem, or adivce with something, the owners were quick to help...whether it was a recommendation for dinner or how to turn in our car rental with the least degree of hassel. From our experience here, we would return without question....my youngest son was at La Luna a 2 weeks earlier, and he confirmed the ratings for that venerable hotel...you will not go wrong in staying at either of these pleasant inns.

This is a lovely place with a few caveats. First of all, the rooms are very nice. They seem to be recently updated and the updates are tasteful (although they could do with less angel-themed art). The medium-sized rooms also benefit from high ceilings and seem more spacious because of that. Wood beamed ceilings and tile floors also add charm.

A warning if you plan to drive to the hotel - it is in the pedestrian heart of the city. Definitely ask the hotel for detailed driving instructions as there are none posted on the web site. We drove right through the main pedestrian street during the evening "passegiata," which was rather embarrasing. The hotel's garage is tiny, but worked fine for our mini-van.

The service was fairly basic - not particularly warm and enthusiastic. The lady in charge seemed a bit stressed out.

We did not spend much time in the common areas, including the breakfast room or the courtyard as the streets and piazzas of lucca were much more appealing.

Spent a week at the Alla Dimora Lucense. It is situated in the heart of Lucca just around the corner from the Chiesa di San Frediano and the Piazza del Anfiteatro. The bus station is a 10 minute stroll away and the train station is accessible in 15 minutes on foot. It is an affittacamere rather than a hotel but apart from the facts that there are only 7 rooms (named after locations in Lucca rather than numbered) and that there is not 24 hour reception service (the reception is not covered overnight), it seemed like a 3* plus hotel. We were given our own keys to access the property when the reception was closed.
We stayed in the "Piazza della Colonna Mozza" which was a spacious double room on the 2nd floor looking on to the narrow street. We had a view of the campanile of San Frediano. The room was simply but artfully decorated, with ample storage and with modern ensuite facilities. In fact, it seemed that a careful artistic touch was used in the coordinated decor of the property. The place was spotlessly clean, the staff always welcoming, friendly and helpful. The services were those expected in a hotel - daily room cleaning, linen and towel changes. We even got little chocolates left at the bedside every evening.
Our stay there was almost without fault. The only problem really was due to the location. The bells of that majestic campanile seen from our window pealed with regularity every morning between 7:00 and 7:30. Great if you forgot to pack that travel clock, not so great for a little morning snooze.
Lucca itself is a beautiful and gentille city. It is busy during the daytime with day tourists but becomes much quieter during the evening when it is possible to stroll the famous piazzas in solitude.
There are many places to dine locally but I can recommend Trattoria Gigi, piazza del Carmine and Da Francesco, corte Portici, both offering delicious, traditional Lucchese cuisine in a relaxed, familial setting at very reasonable prices. For lunch, the best pizzas are at Pizzeria Rusticanella 2, via San Paolino. They also offer a superb value 2 course lunch for 7.50€. I enjoyed superb antipasti and pasta at Ristorante da Guido, via Cesare Battisti but their main meat dishes were sometimes excellent and at other times disappointing but still at very reasonable prices.
Lucca is a beautiful, relaxing city, la cucina lucchese delicious and the Alla Dimora Lucense a great place to stay.
