“Really nice and could easily be outstanding”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

We stayed for one night in the room downstairs with its own entrance. It took us ages to find the place but the staff (mother & son) were great at talking us in on the phone and getting us parked in the courtyard. they were lovely, warm, welcoming and attentive. The room was lovely and full of character, bathroom nice & clean. The two things that could have been improved, there was no option for us to turn on the heating although we were cold and the installation of a secondary door at the end of the entrance corridor from the main stairwell and at the bottom of the internal stairs in the room to the sitting\dining room would block out some intrusive noise. The breakfast was good with lots of pastries and there was complimentary fruit\nuts\water & brandy in the evening.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Stayed only one night but fell in love with the hotel and Lucca. Danielle is very helpful and welcoming - she provided us with guide books, maps, and recommendations around the area (including info on a local tribute to Puccini concert). Perfect location - short walk to the main shopping street and the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. The hotel is set in a 15th century building and used to be a mansion. High ceilings throughout with beautiful (mostly antique) furnishings. Wonderful main room for relaxing, reading etc and always stocked with fruits and a bottle water. We were in the Puccini room but also got to see the other rooms (we were the only ones as it was still the cold March season) - they are all beautifully decorated with comfort in mind. Our room was very spacious with a comfortable bed. The bathroom was also big. Wifi connection was excellent. Breakfast was a wonderful spread with made to order eggs - despite being the only ones, nothing was spared. Do note that the hotel is above a museum and can be easily missed. Secured Parking is also available for a fee. Relais San Lorenzo is a charming comfortable hotel that we hope to return to one day.

We read about this hotel on TA. YES, you enter in same door as museum , but it is well marked. Proprietor Danielle was very helpful. She speaks English. She recommended a great spot nearby for dinner. We met another couple there from Ireland who lived it so much they returned to this place. We too plan to return! Thank you!

What tipped this as our choice for Lucca was what we read on-line about the Butterfly room. We made a special request for it (it costs a little extra) and we were fortunate that it was available. I'm sure the rest of the hotel is charming--certainly all the common areas have a delightful character--but the Butterfly room, or more properly Butterfly suite, is a real romantic's indulgence: a generous-sized room and bathroom, plus, up a couple of steps, a spacious sitting-room with books and magazines, and, beyond that, a long, outdoor terrace with plants and comfy seating. Butterfly because of the town's famous musical son, of course--"Do you know Puccini?" was Daniela's first question--there are portraits of him on the hotel walls ... well, the place is a delight. Yes, you have to enter through the museum door, and there's a bit of a climb to reception, but there's smiling staff to help with your bags and Daniela's welcome is warm and genuine (she even went so far as to call me in Monte Carlo when we had a panic over a passport we thought we'd left in the room). As everyone says, a great breakfast--and, the nights we were there, a decanter of brandy was left out in the dining room for anyone who fancied a late-night sip. Classy. .

This is a gem. Having only the reviews to go on, I'm happy to have booked this hotel. Despite a 20 minutes walk from the train station and no elevator, the hotel was a pleasant surprise. Daniela is a gracious host and lent a Lucca guidebook for any information about the city. A renovated castle, the "living room" and all the 5 rooms have high ceilings. Breakfast is served in the living room. You can sit in the room during the day / night to savour the bottled water, cognac or fresh fruit left on the table, or read a good book. Wifi is reliable in all the rooms.

Room is spacious, and has a mini-fridge with kettle. Bathroom is fitted with the modern fixtures like a rain shower head. The overall atmosphere is cozy and warm. The bed mattress is very comfortable, felt like it was made of foam.

At breakfast, staff served each table fresh croissants with jam inside and bread. Eggs will be cooked to your liking. There is no deli meat if you are looking for that. Otherwise, there is choice of juice, milk and hot beverages. You can make toast. Abundant pastries on the coffee table like plates of different cookies, tarts and cakes beckon you. Try the "seed" cookies. (If you like the seed cookies, you can find them at one bakery called Forne a Vapore Amedio Giusti.)

Location is convenient to shopping (Via Fillungo), restaurants, and the wall. Safe during day and night. Love the old streets to wander around. Rent a bike to go around the wall. The small town has lots to offer if you stay for a few days. Try the Torte di Verdura at a bakery or in a restaurant. Food is excellent in this town.

I had to pinch myself for finding this place at 73 euros per night (+ tourist tax for 1E per person). Book ahead during the high season as I'm sure the 5 rooms will be booked quickly.

Room Tip: Check-in and checkout are at specific times. Arrange with hotel if arriving outside these hours.

Beautiful little hotel in the beautiful town of Lucca. Our room had a large bathroom and a huge shower cubicle, very luxurious. The inlcuded breakfast was a highlight, fresh bread, pastries, eggs and coffee. Friendly staff too. Would highly recommend Relais San Lorenzo.
