“Excellent Value, clean and friendly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2011

I stayed 1 night here in order to catch an early flight home from Pisa, but would recommend it for longer, as a great base for exploring the town and surroundings.

Hotel is located in a back street behind the Via Santa Maria, and this makes it quieter, but still within easy reach of Tower (5 mins away) and very interesting Old Town.

I stayed in a double room with shared bathroom, but in fact think I had all the facilities to myself.

Room was spacious, well ventilated, clean, comfortable and quiet. Faced out onto a courtyard/garden. There's no lift and 4 floors, so bear this in mind when requesting rooms. Hotel has left-luggage facility.

Coffee/cold drinks available from downstairs lounge. Hotel doesn't do breakfast, but directs guests to small friendly place just around the corner, open from 7.30 am and very reasonably priced.

Reception staff friendly and helpful. You pay in full at check-in, which makes things simpler as front desk isn't staffed between about 8pm and 8 am.

Brochure in room has useful information and details of restaurants "where the owners eat", with different recommendations for fish restaurant, pasta restaurant, local tuscan cooking, ice cream etc. The pasta place was delicous and authentic and a very good price. In quest of a nice meal I found myself in the charming older pedestrianised part of Pisa, completely different in atmosphere to the more touristy leaning tower/cathedral area.

Hotel was also only a few minutes away from the stop for the Lam Rossa bus, which takes you to the airport in 20 mins for just 1.50 Euros.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room at the back was quiet. Request a room on a lower floor if stairs are an issue. There's no...

I didn't even get to stay the night at this place and had the worst experience with this hostel. The lady I was dealing misinformed me regarding cancellation and after a long debate and conversation the lady said that they where not going to end up charging me. After returning from my holiday I checked my credit card statement and realised that they charged me for the night, which was surely a mistake. After emailing them about the mistake of being charged they informed me that they had changed their mind and decided to go ahead and charge me for the night that I didn't even staying without informing me of this change made and left me to believe otherwise. Now what kind of customer service is that and would you really want to trust and stay at a place that treat their customers like that................ Just appalling!!!!

As everyone says - it is a no frills - safe place to stay the night with a free shuttle to the airport at times. This is good, but for a few euros extra (about 20 for us) you can stay at the Hotel Francesco whose rooms were better appointed than Helvetia and offer the same free shuttle. For the airport shuttle you have to go all the way to the door of Francesco anyway. We saw Francesco only after booking Helvetia - so we could not change.

I nearly didn't stay here because of some negative reviews on tripadvisor - this is really unfair and unreasonable. Helvetia is exactly what it purports to be - a no frills, value accommodation option but one that is in a superb location so great value for money and with really competent, helpful, friendly and patient staff and is clean and well fitted out.
You are minutes from Duomo, but shielded from noise as you are on a little alley. The premises even has a nice little garden area and sitting room. You can have a room with bathroom as I did - not huge but not so small as to be inconvenient - and totally clean and lots of hot water. If you want more budget you can have a room with shared bathroom. Simply don't understand the gripes on this site.

Not only is this hotel difficult to find, it suffers from "cheapness"! A pure budget hotel! Our room did not have a/c, and you will need one during the hot days of August in Pisa! The ceiling fan was so old and made so much noise (even worse on slow speed), that no one in the room slept well! No cross breeze, so you got to keep cool somehow. Luckily we only stayed one night, otherwise we would have gone crazy! Bathroom floor was dirty too! So basic was the room, that the shampoo was only a small tear-open towelett sized package! The t.v. was mounted on the wall and the screen was smaller bigger than my Ipod! But, then again, who has time to watch t.v. However, the hotel was only a 5 min walk to the tower. Parking is very, very difficult, so if you got a car...hmmm. We got lucky and parked outside the wall on the main street, and since it was Sunday and a Monday holiday...parking was free. I was told if you can fiind a spot inside the wall near the hotel, then it was "ok" to park even though the signs warn you about possible fines. I would recommend the Hotel Duomo.

Room Tip: Book a larger room on the upper floor

The location of this hotel is its main strength, as it's a very short walk to the tower. We also found the rates to be very reasonable and liked the breakfast deal; the hotel itself does not offer breakfast, but you can have breakfast at a nearby cafe for a reduced rate. The decor is interesting---tile floors in the rooms, pretty bed frames, older wooden furniture--but everything was clean and comfortable. The bathroom wasn't the nicest, but it was very clean and functioned properly, so we had no complaints.

We found the staff to be incredibly friendly and genuine and enjoyed our stay. Definitely stay here if you're looking for a solid budget hotel in a convenient location!

Next to the tower and many restaurants. The room seemed to be just renovated and it was clean. The hotel doesn't serve breakfast, but you'll get a small breakfast with €3 in a co-operation cafe just around the corner.
