Remember those rooms in your grandmother's house that smelled of wax polish and gleamed with vast expanses of clunky and rarely used furniture? Welcome to the Grand Hotel Duomo in Pisa. Clean but not updated for 50 years. Everything needs bringing into the 21st century. Dull and worthy. I've been to monestaries that have more vibrancy to them.

To be fair the staff were friendly but in an Acorn Antiques kind of way. As the restaurant, well I'll dine out on my memories of it with much more enthusiasm than I dined in!

The breakfasts were adequate .... just.

Pisa is a university town and has a good feel to it. It reminded me strongly of Cambridge. Cheaper and calmer than Florence. It has many excellent restaurants and is a good location from which to explore the western lowlands of Tuscany.

One day this might be a good hotel but at the moment it is a tired old relic. Avoid.

Excellent hotel, located 2 minutes walk from the leaning tower. The rooms have a small balcony which opens right onto the street, and has beautiful views of the leaning tower and church.

Everything was good. The only places which could be a deterrent are the rooms could be small if there are more than 2 of you. And the breakfast is typically Italian sparse. Else, a great place to stay.

Having read all the reviews, we decided to stya anyway...it's true the coffee was terrible, but having tld the staff that the Trip Advisor community hated the coffee, they posted a sign saying that guests should just ask for fresh cappucino. The staff was fantastic and very accommodating. Very very close to the tower or Pisa and very clean. Rooms aren't big, but so what - sleep here and spend your time exploring Pisa or going to Florence for a day trip!

I'd stay here again. Ask for Graziano to be your driver and you wll be ok! Natalia is the concierge and fantastic - tell them Michael fro Canada sent you!

Enjoy!

Mike

Stayed in this hotel October 09, read all the reviews on this page before we went and glad I ignored the bad ones, Yes the hotel was dated but charming, could not be closer to the Leaning Tower just look out thre door and there it was , very quick check in, staff very nice, breakfast just ok, coffee terrible, and like in all the continent water was cold for tea and coffee, rooms clean ,ok small but clean. bar man very nice and helpful good english. and as we were leaving they were in the process of repainting the hotel don't forget to visit the roof of the hotel for most amazing view of the tower,
. not the Ritz but cleanand comfortable
