“Like a trip back in time.”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

If you are into history and character, this hotel is for you. It was sort of like staying in a museum. The old guestbooks go back into the 19th century and include Charles Dickens! Our room was huge compared to any of the others we had in Italy. The only downside I would mention is that the WiFi was out of order for most of our two day stay and the staff seemed very frustrated with what seemed to be a non-functional password system.

The Royal Victoria is described in the Lonely Planet Guide as offering 'Old World Luxury'. I can only disagree. It is frankly a little tatty.

The reception area and foyer is very old world and very nice it is too. The service is friendly and welcoming. The problems start with the rooms. I stayed there on 2 separate occasions over the space of 10 days and had 3 different rooms. The first room the air con didn't work and was crawling with ants. Eventually we were offered a replacement room after we perserved over 24 hrs in highlighting the problems. The new room was better and had a view of the River.

On return 10 days later we again had a river view room. The bed was the most comfortable one we had in Italy as they tended to generally be very hard on our trip. The terrace on the 4th floor was just the ticket. On the negative side in the room there was broken electric socket and exposed wiring, the shower bracket was broken meaning we had to hold it and there was a hole in the bathroom for where the drain cover was broken.

It generally just needs some TLC. Shame as I really wanted to like it and with a little work it could be lovely. For that hence I only give it a 2 sorry. :-(

Is easily accessible from the airport. 1 euro 20 cents 2 euro If you by the ticket on the bus instead of at the bus stop. Ride on the 'Lam Rossa' bus. Don't panic when the bus passes the tower and heads out of town. It does come back! Ride takes about 45 mins in total and you get of at the 'Pencelli 3' stop just outside the hotel. Much cheaper than a taxi and you get a tour of Pisa thrown in.

WE stayed at the Royal Victoria the night of August 22 so we could see Pisa after Florence and prior to Cinque Terre. The hotel is an easy walk from the train station just across the river. It is an older hotel with an interesting history. The owners great Grandfather noticed the number of Brits on the grand tour and changed the name to the Royal Victoria to celebrate Queen Victoria's ascension to the throne. We were greeted by a Friendly staff and directed to our 3rd. storey room facing the river. Our room came with a nice washroom and a painted ceiling. Antiques abound throughout our room and the hotel and it is worth it to walk around all the floors looking at all the different pieces. A beautiful garden lounge on the top floor lets you quietly relax. Order drinks from the staff and you can enjoy a cool drink before dinner. Breakfast in the Morning is in the in the restaurant on the second floor. It is very typical with cold cuts, fruit, buns and very good coffee. All in all a very good visit. Please remember this is not a holiday inn but an older hotel which has been in this location for centuries. Enjoy the adventure.

Inadvertently booked a room with a shared bathroom. The front desk claimed it was advertised at such (might have been small print), but overall it was not a bad experience. The common areas of the hotel are beautiful if you can appreciate old constructions. The staircases are wide with high ceilings. The shared bathrooms were ok, (not my cup of tea) but I was only there for a night. The bed was very clean but the mattress was not too comfortable. The hotel is located facing the river, just a 15 min walk from the tower. You can reach the train station and airport by foot if need be. There is a bus that stops right in front of the hotel and can be taken to the airport for 1 euro.

Pro
Central location
Historic building
Nice and helpful staff
Affordable

Con
It looks like after its opening, no serious rennovation has taken place ever since: old beds, doors, windows, etc.
Bathroom too small (and again old)
Earplugs needed at night against noice from street and bars in the area.

My husband and I recently spent a night at the Royal Victoria, which is located in an ancient palazzo. If you want modern and functional, this is not the place for you. But if you enjoy atmosphere plus comfort, you will enjoy this hotel located on the banks of the Arno. Easy to find, we were greeted by a friendly desk agent who spoke excellent English. Another staff person actually got in the car with us to direct us to the parking area, which is attached to the hotel in back, but a little complicated to get to because of the one-way streets. You can enter the hotel directly from the parking area. Our room on the side of the hotel was huge with terrazzo floors and 12-foot ceiling. There were screens on the window, a first for us in Italy. The furniture was a little funky but fine. The beds and pillows were very firm. You can walk to the major attractions in 10-15 minutes. Our only problem was with the WiFi. They have recently shifted to a hotel-wide free system, but it was not working well, and I never succeeded in getting online although the desk clerk tried very hard to help me and one other person who arrived with the same problem. Breakfast standard but copious. We were very pleased with our stay here and would return.

This was my third stay here and I love it for its amazing character and atmosphere. No, it's not quiet as sounds echo from nearby after dark. If modern bathroom plumbing or fixtures are important to you then maybe look elsewhere. If you have trouble using an old fashion lock with key then again this may not be for you ( I always lock the door once I'm in but leave the key in the lock so I can get out swifty should needs be).
My experience has been of a clean, tidy room, very friendly & helpful staff and lovely breakfast- which is what I expect. What you also get here is heritage and slightly faded beauty that is hard to replicate and a great experience. I love looking around at all the phots and objects and the roof terrace is just perfect for a coffee or glass of wine. I certainly hope to stay again.
