“very old hotel that needs renovation”
Reviewed 13 June 2012

We arrived in the evening around 9 pm. The lobby was furnished with old fashioned furniture. Wooden sofa set, dimly lit lobby. Worse, the receptionist in the evening ( a middle aged lady ) was not really courteous.

We booked through the internet and it says that there is airconditioning. When we arrived, the airconditioners were not working. When we called reception she said that airconditioners are not allowed to be used during this season due to city government rules. If that was true, then how come all the other hotels where we stayed were with working airconditioning units.
We have come from Florence, Venice and Padua without encountering this problem.

Beds were really very old with very badly chipped paints. Looks like the bed was 100 years old! Wall papers were peeling off and there was this smell in the room like it has not been used and no proper ventilation for the room. Hallways were dimly lit and walls needed a repaint.

Breakfast was good enough with croissants, assorted ham and cheese, coffee and hot chocolate. Staff in the breakfast lounge were helpful.

Reception staff the following morning were quite polite and helpful though.

It is close to the city center but i am sure there are other hotels near the center. I would not recommend this hotel unless they renovate.

Room Tip: We had 6 rooms here but all the rpooms at the 4th flr and 5th floor where we were booked were not go...

We stayed at La Pace for one night to see the leaning tower, it is less than 5 minutes from the train station but is a little difficult to find as the entrance is in a shopping arcade, The hotel is very old fashioned with lots of dark wood, stained glass and paintings even two red English telephone boxes in the reception area but we found it charming. The room was fine and had Sky tv so that meant we could watch films and tv in the language that it was made.
The buffet breakfast was great, well laid out with scambled egg and bacon and the usual croissants, cake, fruit, cereal with proper English tea excellent value as it was included in the price. The only downside was that the location by the train station meant that we felt a little itimidated as there were large numbers of male youths hanging around the area in front of the station so not recommended for single female travellers unless you are aware of the situation. (Not the hotels fault but I thought I should mention it)

The reception team deserve 5 stars, every one of them were very helpful and helped to make our holiday a success. The location near the train station is brilliant - how anyone can make the walk last even 5 minutes is beyond me, it is less than 100 yards. The public areas in the hotel are a mix of styles from bygone eras, we loved it but can see how some wouldnt. The rooms are the let down, they just do not seem inviting, with the bathrooms being the worst part. The hotel seems to be undergoing a refurb which is much needed. Aircraft noise is another problem, at home we live in a very quite area so always expect noise on a city break, but a few of the aircraft literally rattled the bedroom windows - a bit scary the first time. We were on the top floor so maybe it is worse higher up.
We were also slightly put off by the group of men hanging around the hotel entrance. Each night we returned to the hotel we were approached by one of them, whether they were buying, selling or begging i dont know, as thankfully as soon as i said no they went away.
I think 3 stars is about right but am not certain, maybe it should be more or maybe less. We paid under £65 per night and for any stay below £70 per night for 2 with a good breakfast i think it is hard to complain.

Pisa is a nice place, and the tower and duomo were way beyond expectation and are worth the trip on their own. We also visited Lucca - fantastic and Cafe Simo is recommended for a lunch stop, also visited Viarregio - which is ok. Our planned to trip to Florence was scuppered by a rail strike. Just a note on the trains, every train we caught, both regional and intercity was late, no big deal for a bit of sightseeing but if you have to arrive somewhere for a certain time give yourself some leeway.

We had some good meals out but the best by far was in a pizzeria. One night we were not feeling very hungry and decided a salad and pizza would make a nice change. We found the Pizzeria Tavola Calda La Tana on trip advisor and set off - it is easy to find from the river bank. Standing outside we thought it must be a mistake - it looked a bit grotty - but we went in for a look anyway. Once inside you can see why people love the place. Customers are mainly italian and the excellent staff have only a little english, but the menus have english translations so no problem if you only have a few words of italian. It is worthwhile arriving before 8.00pm as by then the place was full and people were either queueing or being turned away.

Room Tip: Top floor - 7 - gives views of the tower from one side of the corridor, on the other side the rooms...

It is unusual for me to be critical but this was exceptionally bad. Here is a copy of my E Mail to the hotel.

My LateRooms.com reservation reference was 18463708R and 18464031R.

Upon arrival, 26th May 2012, we were told that you had no record of this reservation although I had made an "advance purchase" and my documents showed that I had paid in full. There was no evidence of this in the hotel system and as it was otherwise fully booked we were transferred to another hotel nearby and told that the Hotel La Pace would pay for our accommodation in the other hotel. Unfortunate error perhaps but a solution was found at no cost to myself. It was strange that the La Pace reception remembered my name for a booking that could not be found.

On arrival at our second reservation, 1st June 2012, we were given the keys to room 544. It was a very scruffy room in need of redecoration but even worse was the beds. One bed had what felt like the springs pushing through the mattress so we used the other bed. This had an ancient foam mattress with full length, deep "body" impressions after so many people had used it and the foam had sunk. Underneath was a dirty secondary mattress and underneath that were 2 sheets of mismatched plywood bridging a broken bed base. The bed was also sunken in the middle but raised at the edges by the oversize plywood. The foam gave us both an allergic itching sensation. It was a very uncomfortable and sleepless night.

The standard of room was totally unacceptable.

We found the breakfast acceptable and at no time were the staff impolite. We did advise the reception of our complaint but it was denied "....there are no beds like that here....".

The final grumble is that when I checked my bank account on the return home I found that I had paid for 2 nights.

So were we deliberately passed on to the other hotel when reception recognized our names ?

LA PACE is very good example of poor service, poor value for money, poor quality in a very sub standard room. What we in the UK call a "rip off." For the same price the Hotel Italia in Siena was like a palace and represented value for money and excellent service.

I will be posting my comments on Trip Advisor.

Very accommodating staff and very good for a stay over for the airport. We even got a breakfast at 4.30 in the morning before our 7 a.m flight and the man at reception called us a taxi. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend.

I have been escorting small group tours to Tuscany since 2007, and was very pleased when I found this little gem of a hotel a few years ago. The location couldn't be better -- very near the train station, and a pleasant 15-minute walk to Pisa's primary attraction, the "Field of Miracles," with the Duomo and Tower, etc. The staff are extremely friendly (especially Andrea) and helpful. There is a nice bar upstairs with complimentary snacks when you order a drink. The included breakfast buffet, served in the same upstairs room, is quite good. The comments of others here about the small and dated rooms are accurate, but typical of European hotels in this price range -- which is very reasonable.

The hotel is less than a block from the train station. It is nothing fancy, but a very good quality for the price. It's about a 20 minute walk to the Leaning Tower.

The staff is very helpful. A big bonus was the free wifi and buffet breakfast that we were not aware that we would get. One of the better breakfasts that we had while traveling through Europe.
