This hotel is on the more 'local' side of the river, with a good range of restaurants and bars in and around Corso Italia. The hotel is very convenient for the station and airport people mover. The hotel is clean and comfortable, and my room was spacious. The staff were helpful.

Firstly the management and team at this hotel were absolutely superb. Always friendly, happy, keen to help and clearly enjoying their work and proud of the hotel and service they provide. The rooms were clean, comfortable and nicely thought out. Small details like a map printed by the hotel and pencils in the room showed that everything mattered to them. The location south of the river was ideal for us. We didn't mind walking to the Tower and strolling to the main shopping centre. We booked excluding breakfast but in fact we ate there every morning as it was as good as any hotel continental breakfast. For the price I think we got everything we paid for and more. Well done.

This was recommended to us on booking.com and they were really friendly here! We left our luggage in the hotel after checking out before our flight in the evening and they were really helpful with that.

The breakfast was great (cold cheeses, meats, cereals, juices, coffee, pastries, hard boiled eggs and more) and there is an outdoor and indoor dining area. It is only a short walk away from the train station and very convenient. There is also a nice lounge area. Definitely worth a go!

We stayed here for 2 nights pre-Florence and 1 night before heading back home to the UK.

Getting here – If you're coming here from the airport, get the shuttle which runs every 10 minutes which lands at Pisa Central. From the station, its about a 15 minute walk if you are carrying heavy suitcases. The reason for this is because the pavements are horrendous. They are lifted and you need to keep your eye on them, not only because of that, but because you are dodging the dog mess everywhere! If you are just on foot, you’ll get there in 7 mins or so.

Hotel – The hotel itself is situated about a 25 minute walk from the Leaning Tower, but still within easy walking distance from other attractions and nice restaurants (Fulin and Galileo), but is on a side street very close to a main road, so one of the rooms which we stayed in was extremely noisy and I didn’t sleep very well in (Room 101).
The first 2 nights, we stayed in Room 106, a large double room which was quieter than 106 (suite). Room 106 was equipped with a shower – BE AWARE – if you are a large person or struggle with mobility, you WILL NOT FIT IN IT. Room 106 had a lovely bath. Both rooms had what looked like mock Italian antique furniture, mixed with some art deco stuff, not my style, but very clean. Both rooms had shutters and air con, although we didn’t need the air con as we went in March. The shutters didn’t drown out the traffic noise especially on the first floor in Room 106.

The owners (Angela and Pi) were very friendly and there is 24 hour management at the desk. On our return, they upgraded us at no extra cost to the suite, Room 106 which was very kind of them. The room was massive, with a desk, couch, 4 windows, huge bathroom, BUT very noisy. Presume that is due to all the windows in the room and lack of good double glazing?

Breakfast – think this lets them down a bit. Shame they don’t have fresh fruit. Lots of pastries and bread for you to toast. Cold boiled eggs and various jams and hams/cheeses. The lady serving tea/coffee was also a little surly which was a shame as it ruined the dining experience as she clearly didn’t want to be there! We didn’t opt for breakfast in the package with Booking.com but paid extra for it at 7.50 euros each.

Also feel it would be nice if they put tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Dead thirsty early evening and went down for one and was charged 3 Euros for a cup.

I don’t think Pisa is worth staying for longer than 1 day unless youre doing trips to other places like Lucca etc.

If youre looking for high end contemporary looking furniture, this isn’t the place for you, but if youre looking for a friendly warm welcome, a base close(ish) to the main attraction for a night that is reasonable in price, this is the place for you.

Also, be sure to book the Leaning Tower in advance, it gets really busy. We did the late slot which was great and not so many people around so it wasn't as crowded at the top!

Room Tip: Room 106 which is a suite is very noisy, Room 101 shower is tiny so if youre large you wont get in!!

After reading quite a few reviews for this hotel, I am shaking my head. It seems like recent ones are generally more positive, so perhaps some renovation has been done. It is Italy, so one review complaining of an older building is perhaps traveling in the wrong country, as old generally goes with the territory here. What’s more important is upkeep, and Hotel Alessandro della Spina has kept the rooms in good and comfortable condition.
Our room, #108, has a large bed made of two twins but no gap is perceptible. The linens are comfy, but my one quibble is that a nicer bedspread or duvet would be nice. The room has good general and task lighting, especially bed reading lights and desk light. Our room also has a mini-bar, safe, ample closet, small flat-screen TV (Italian only) and a pleasant balcony. The bathroom is very clean and quite fresh with lots of big towels and sparkling fixtures.

We also found the breakfast quite ample by Italian standards and also with more non-sweet offerings than other places in the last two weeks, with eggs, cheese, two meats, small sausage, unsweetened yogurt, cereals and muesli, as well as more common croissants and cakes plus donuts, and then juices and hot beverage choice. I asked for a second cappuccino and was served it with a smile.
I agree with many others that the staff at reception go out of their way to be friendly and helpful
. It was in no way dark, dingy, or rundown. It isn’t in the best area, but it is in good proximity to the train station (5 minutes walk with a backpack) and also a central square. We loved the walk to the (big tourist magnet) Leaning Tower—and not having our hotel in that trinket-y tourist-y part of town. For the $160 US we paid for 2 nights (over Easter weekend!) with breakfast, we found this hotel to be an excellent value.
