“Nice place”
Reviewed 27 October 2009

Rooms were a bit smaller, but clean and elegant. Nice place to stay. Leaning tower in walkable distance from this hotel.

We ended up staying in this hotel in Pisa purely because the only flight we could get for our Tuscany holiday was a late arrival into Pisa.

Both the hotel and the city were a pleasant surprise.

The hotel location is not the most central but is only a 20 min stroll or so from the centre of the city and 10 mins from the leaning tower. The rooms are very nice and the staff attentive. The breakfast was very good and even included scrambled eggs and bacon (however the juices were less than appetising - weakly diluted from concentrate). There is free parking which is also a plus.

Overall, I would have expected more from a 4 star hotel.

Although it may be 800 mt from the Leaning Tower, what the website doesn't say is that the walk is along a main road, including a not-so-nice walk through an underpass, which I would not want to do at night.

As many other reviews have stated, the service also leaves a lot to be desired. Although the staff appear to speak good English, they aren't very helpful. We had a few issues with trying to use the hotel airport shuttle and in the end decided to take our business elsewhere.

The breakfast is also more representative of what you would find from a 2 or 3 star hotel - the "juice" was basically water and there was only one coffee machine for a hotel that has 89 rooms. That's a long queue for a tiny cup of hot water. The scrambled eggs, however, were very good.

Our room - 208 - was standard. It had Sky television (great!) and the mattresses were very firm, but the shower stall was tiny and the room didn't have tea/coffee facilities.

My thoughts are that this hotel would be handy for visitors who have cars and don't want to drive in to the busier areas of Pisa, and that the staff are likely used to caterering for large tour groups.

The location of the Grand Hotel Bonanno is a good 15-20 minute walk from the town centre, but only about 10 minutes from the real highlights of Pisa - the Leaning Tower. The service was only average - one of the hotel receptionists was very nice and helpful, but everyone else was rather cold and once or twice, simply rude. The hotel itself though is quite nice, with modern and comfortable facilities (including good air conditioning, which we appreciated after air con problems with our Florence hotel). The rooms are comfortable and nice. Breakfast was quite good as well. I would definitely stay here again if I ever returned to Pisa.

We stayed for one night at the Grand Hotel Bonanno in Pisa in September. The hotel's position is conveniently central, about 5-10 mins walk to the cathedral and leaning tower, and 20 mins walk from the train station. As other reviewers have noted, you have to walk through an underpass under the railway to get to the hotel; it was fine - some graffiti but otherwise safe enough even late at night. Check-in was efficient, if rather cold and impersonal; check-out was similar. The room was relatively small but clean and with modern furniture. Likewise the bathroom was small but clean, and the shower was fine (no bath). The view from the room was over the underpass with the top of the cathedral and leaning tower visible. Breakfast was continental; hot food (scrambled eggs, bacon) was available, and coffee was dispensed by a machine. All in all, an unremarkable stay, reasonable value but not a memorable hotel.

Stayed here for 1 night as we were travelling around Tuscany. Near to Pisa airport and 10 minutes walk via the underpass (which is absolutely fine- there is graffitti in every city in Europe!) to the field of miracles. Lovely clean room with flat screen TV and nice bathroom. No problem getting food at after 9pm. Service a bit slow at the bar but staff seemed OK. Only 5 minutes walk to San Rossore station (cross road opposite hotel, turn left - aaway from underpass- and then take the first right- station is at the end of the road) where you can catch the Lucca train or go one stop back to Pisa Centrale to catch all other trains. Would recommend that you travel to Lucca and to Montecatini- two lovely places with lots to do.
