“True Tuscan Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2013

We spent two nights here in June with a family of 4. The photos and reviews had us excited before we arrived. We were not disappointed! The view of the vineyards and San Gimignano rising up in the distance was like a fairy tale or a postcard. You could lounge by the pool, sip wine on the back porch under the moonlight, or take convenient day trips to many towns around Tuscany. We chose to stay put and relax. The grocery store is just south of the town and had everything you need to make your own dinner, which we did using the outdoor Tuscan oven and eating in the dining room of our large apartment. Giuseppeina gave us a wonderful tour of the wine making facility and then we sipped various wines and enjoyed fresh bread and olive oil on the terrace at sunset. We brought home lots of wine and oil to share with our friends. Highly recommend this hidden jewel. It's not touristy and is the real deal in Tuscany!

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 June 2013

Rating based on 1 visit of 10 days June 2013.

Location: B&B agriturismo, winery. Just over 5 kilometers, 7 minute drive from San Gimignano.

Facilities: very quiet well maintained, beautiful property consisting of a main building with reception and breakfast area, together with large fresh water pool. Opposite building with 6 standard rooms and a few apartments. Separate building (villa) with 8 superior rooms. Large parking area with sheltered parking lots. Check in latest by 7 pm, unless otherwise coordinated, check out latest by 1030 am. Free WiFi in rooms and public areas.

Restaurants: none. Breakfast area in main building, breakfast served from 0830-1030. On request and if sufficient guests participate, diner can be served as well in the same area. No lunch. Breakfast in and outside possible with beautiful view on San Gimignano. Continental, Italian cold breakfast with freshly made cakes (cheese cake!).

Bars: none. Possibility to purchase wine of property at same price as when you want to buy it to take home, eg 9€ for a bottle of Chianti, which you can drink at the pool, terrace, room.
Wines both red and white, very good. Wines can be bought, also own olive oil, very good quality.

Pool: Nice, large fresh water pool with sunbeds and sunshade (parasol)

Rooms: standard rooms have no airco and in typical Tuscan style. Superior rooms are of similar size, but with airco. Some of these rooms modern style. All rooms have fridge with freezer, microwave and bathrooms are equipped with shower (no bath), hairdryer. No safe. No iron. Daily towel and cleaning service. 2 adjacent standard rooms can be used as connecting rooms but 1 connecting door, be careful every sound made in 1 room or use of bathroom will be heard in the other as if it is in the own. 1 standard room has also a bedroom upstairs, eg for kids.

Generally: very beautiful B&B with very friendly and helpful staff in a remote and quiet location at a convenient distance from San Gimignano. Rooms are of medium size, breakfast is not a large buffet but certainly more than sufficient in choices offered. And no lunch or diner is possible. Very good wines which can be bought and also consumed at the property. Wine tasting on request with visit to wine production area.

***Precise Driving Directions At End of this Review***

If you dream of sipping local wine on the patio of a farmhouse overlooking the Tuscan vineyards, with a walled medieval city on the nearby hilltop, then you have dreamt of Mormoraia. Add to that dream a wonderful staff, beautiful pool, modern accommodations inside a rustic farmhouse, the best breakfast in Italy, and an on-site winery, and you will imagine you are in heaven!

We stayed here for two nights in May 2013 as we travelled north from Rome on our way to Florence and Venice. This location really deserves five nights, so that the pleasures of Tuscany can seep into you. Our room had a king bed, with a separate loft with two additional single beds, could sleep four persons total. The bathroom was clean and modern. There was free WiFi available in the room.

The hotel is an agriturismo, basically a farmhouse converted and modernized for tourists, in the middle of a working farm which produces its' own vernaccia wine grapes and olive oil. The on-site winery provided a tour by the vintner, young Mattia Barzaghi, who displayed his passion for winemaking with a humorous tale, followed by a generous selection of wines to taste and purchase.

The infinity pool is surrounded by comfortable chairs and tables, and breakfast was served both in the breakfast room but also on the patio overlooking the vineyards and the ancient city of San Gimignano, the city of towers.

Since my words seem rosey, I'll upload some photos I took of the property and surroundings, and let the images do the convincing!

Directions to Agroturismo Mormoraia

Having gotten lost trying to use the directions provided by the hotel, I retraced my steps and can offer to you these detailed instructions...

1. assuming you are on the autostrade between Siena and Florence, take the Poggibonsi exit that includes signs to "S. Gimignano", which should take you west bound through an industrial section of Poggibonsi

2. at each round-about, continue following well-marked signs for San Gimignano

3. In the town of San Gimignano, the road will take you to the main tower gate of the old walls of the city, and the road will only turn left here, in front of the tower gate

4. within 50 meters you will come to a T-intersection (straight ahead takes you into a parking area). Turn right (northbound) on the road, on maps this road is named Via dei Fossi

5. you will be driving with the old city wall to your right. At the end of the old wall, the main road will force you to turn left (a right turn here would take you to parking areas 3 and 4). Follow the road to make this left turn, on maps this road is named Via Garabaldi

6. within 100 meters, turn right at the road with large blue directional signs to the villages of Ulignano and Cusona. On the maps, this road is named Strada Provinciale 127

7. drive exactly 3 km. As you approach this distance, be looking for a road sign indicating a 90-degree right turn with an option for a smaller road to the left. When you arrive at the turn, there will be a blue sign on the left, pointing to the hamlet of San Benedetto to the left. Turn left here (westbound)

8. drive 1.5 km, and look for a gravel road on the right that has a decorative wooden barrel on the roadside, and above it one of the brown hotel signs that says "Mormoraia". Turn right onto the gravel road and drive about 300 meters to the driveway on the right for Mormoraia.

Room Tip: The rooms in the main farmhouse include breakfast in the price. There are four apartments in a separ...

We spent one week with 2 kids in Mormoraias large apartment and could not had a better experience. We were taken in as friends and family. The staff and Mathias gave us an experience of a lifetime. They were flexible and helping out with tips, catering to our needs and gave us the very fines of Italian hospitality. The surrounding towns, restaurants, cities and atmosphere is just extraordinary. The wine is by the way awesome. We are bound to go back!

Our 1st time to Tuscany and the outlooks from the resort did not disappoint. Service was friendly, and Josephina in particular very helpful.

We had an upstairs room with sweeping views through shuttered doors when opened.Beds and pillows were quite comfortable, room acceptable size and bathroom also good size with modern shower.

Some scope for improvement:

More regular replacement of towels (replaced once in 5 days)
Breakfast adequate but not outstanding
No food offering after breakfast although the resort did put on an evening meal on one night prepared by an outstanding local chef which was superb
Wifi connection was patchy
Rates are at the upper end and one would expect better offerings in food eg: light lunch

Unfortunately, a little expensive but fantastic!
People working there are fabulous and attentive. Breakfast is great and fresh every morning.
Wine produced in Mormoraia is also very very good and vineyards and nature surounding Tenuta Mormoraia is out of this world.
Go there, you won't feel sorry if you do!

P.S. Allesandra was the best! I'm very sorry she's not working in Mormoraia anymore! Wish her all the best on her new job.

I stayed for 4 nights here last year and had the most incredible time. The villas are quite basic in terms of it's amenities but it's charming and romantic in it's decor. You really feel like you're in the heart of Italy when you stay here. When you wake up and open those beautiful wooden doors, you're greeted with rolling vineyards that seem to go on forever and with views to the magical San Gimignano town walls and high towers in the distance, it's pure bliss and romance. Can't wait to come back to Italy and spend some more time here.
