“Lovely peaceful location, great base to see Tuscany”
Reviewed 5 October 2011

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Poggetto di Montese with 5 nights in the Le Rondini apartment (2 apartments on the property). It was great to have a kitchen to cook for ourselves for a few nights. The view of San Gimignano on the next hill was lovely to wake up to in the mornings, and be able to sit and enjoy a vino in the garden watching the sun set.

My only advise would be that this is an easy location if you have a vehicle, but not so easy to walk safely to the bus, as we thought we would be able to do. It is quite a walk, downhill to the bus, and uphill from, but no safe area to walk in parts of the road. We had a hire car and this was a perfect base to visit Chianti, San Gimignano, Volterra, and Florence (we drove to Certaldo where there is plenty of free parking and caught the train from there).

The lounge area is detached with a breezeway between the kitchen/bedroom/bathroom part of the accomodation. We didn't use this area much as Italian tv is mostly in Italian, but it was well stocked with local information and brochures. There is also a covered pergola area with table and chairs and some lilos in the garden.

Marco and his family were lovely and respected our privacy. Their puppies provided some lively entertainment.

Room Tip: Le Rondini was facing the view to San Gimignano, and had a lovely garden facing the view, but the ot...

What a gem! My partner and I stayed with Marco and his family for 5 nights and it was certainly one of the highlights of our trip. Our accommodation was attached to the main family home, but Marco and his family gave us plenty of privacy. We loved eating at our outdoor table for our meals and then retiring to the reclining chairs in the front yard to watch the sunset over the Tuscan hills….just a beautiful location.

We thought that since Poggetto di Monetese was 1 km from the bus stop that we wouldn’t require transport. It is about 1 km to the bus stop, but from the bus stop you have to walk up a hill on a road without a shoulder. Also, the bus stop is not the main one and is located about 2.5-2km out of town. We walked the distance a couple of times, but then decided to hire a vespa from the town centre for a few days which was just fantastic! We took day trips to Siena and Volterra on our vespa which turned out to be another highlight of our trip. Riding through the countryside with rolling hills covered in vineyards and stopping off at little roadside stalls for olive oil tasting was just magical. The other great thing about a vespa vs a car is that we didn’t have to pay for parking and it was very easy to find a spot to park. Our vespa was also useful to get us to the nearest train station in Poggibonsi (about 10 km from San Gimignano) for our day trip to Florence.

The accommodation itself was rustic and full of charm. It was very well stocked with cooking utensils, coffee, spices, olive oil, balsamic vinegar…a perfect accompaniment to the food we bought from the supermarket in the centre of town and the specialty shops in San Gimignano.

The bed was comfortable, the bathroom had a toilet, bidet and a functioning shower with plenty of warm water. The window shutters blacked out our room at night, so we both slept very peacefully into the late hours of the morning, oblivious to the time. The living/tv room is detached from the main accommodation, but is only 2m away. It was a little on the musty side, but that wasn’t a problem for us as we didn’t spend much time there, instead we preferred to sit outdoors and enjoy the beautiful Tuscan weather. There is a washing room stocked with washing powder and we were provided with a clotheshorse. Poggetto di Montese is a home away from home.

Marco was very helpful with any enquiries we had about the area and was kind enough to organise a taxi for us to get to Poggibonsi on the day of our departure. Just a word of advice though-if you catch a taxi, ask the driver before you leave how much the trip will cost or obtain a quote beforehand. Our ride to Poggibonsi took a little over 10 minutes and cost 35 Euro! We read in the guide book later on that a taxi should only cost around 20 Euro from Poggibonsi to San Gimignano.

All in all, a great experience and we cant wait to go back and take our friends and family!
