“Next time we want to stay here!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2011

We were already booked into a hotel in San Gimignano and from Tripadvisor I saw that this place did lunches and wine tasting, so emailed them and set up a time for our first day in Tuscany. We walked down the Via Vecchia from San Gim (takes about 15 - 20 minutes) and arrived at this beautiful place at around 2pmn.

A group of people were just leaving after obviously having a wonderful lunch, and we were welcomed by Fausto who set up our lunch table underneath an olive tree, overlooking their vinyard and stunning countryside. The lunch was perfect, pasta, cheeses, salamis, bread, along with tasting the various wines, Vin Santo & grappa! It was a very warm afternoon and I couldn't think of anything nicer than sitting there with my husband.
Afterwards, Fausto showed us around and explained their wine making methods etc. We didn't realise you could stay there, so he also showed us around the building, lovely outside pool and stunning terrace where they serve breakfasts with the hill top medieval town of San Gimignano as a back drop.
This is a beautiful place to stay or even while away a few hours over a long lazy lunch. We were so impressed with the wine we bought 12 bottles and will think of our short time there when we open each bottle. Definately want to return.

We stayed at Guardastelle last year, and when it came to deciding where to go for our honeymoon last month it was top of our list. We love this property. The owners Susanna and Fausto are great hosts, and the accomodation and grounds are beautiful. We stayed in an appartment last year but opted for the hotel this time round. Both accomodations are great (you get a buffet breakfast included if you stay in the hotel). Temperatures were in the high 30's when we stayed in July and so we were quite happy lounging by the pool for most of the day. We did manage to tear ourselves away and pop round to the winery at lunchtime where Susanna prepared a delicious lunch - pasta, antipasti, bruscetta etc - which we washed down with a bottle of their Vernaccia white wine (in fact I'm sipping a glass from the case we had shipped over as I write!) Most evenings we walked up the track to San Gimignano (15 mins) for an aperativo and dinner. We love the Vecchie Mura, particularly if you get a table on the panoramic terrace in their garden - the view is spectacular. All in all another fab stay - we'll be back next year!

My disabled husband and myself spent a wonderful time in Susanna and Fausto's Guardastelle !!! Beautiful location and property, incredibly lovely owners, great wines and a personal service, which we appreciated a lot due to several problems we had with a rent a car company !!!!

Susanna and Fausto, thank you for everything !!! We 'll come back next year, I promise !!!!

While I didn't spend the night here, I did visit the winery as part of a tour through Tuscany. The property is absolutely beautiful and has gorgeous views of San Gimignano. Fausto, one of the owners (he runs the B and B and winery with his wife Susanna), provided us with a wonderful overview of wine production in the region, and then we got to have a light lunch and sample some of the products. The olives were amazing (and I usually don't like olives), as was the vernaccia. The meal was simple, good food, and everyone was really friendly. If I ever plan another trip to Tuscany, I will make sure to spend at least a day or two here, as it looks like it would be very relaxing, and a nice break away from all the tourists (and to have more of those olives)!

We spent a very pleasant and informative lunch and afternoon tasting the wines and learning about the wine making process. Very worthwhile and the hospitality was great.

We've visited Tuscany many times and stayed in a variety of hotels and apartments and Guardastelle is by far the best. It is the one place that we would return to time and time again.

This was our second visit here, having first stayed in September 2009. The location is fantastic, the scenery superb, the apartments immaculate and Susanna and Fausto the perfect hosts, making you feel part of their family whilst you are there.

Guaradastelle has been immaculately restored by Susanna and Fausto and there is a completely authentic Tuscan feel throughout. The landscaping of the gardens is beautiful and has been well thought out. The pool area is lovely with fantastic views over the vineyard and there is a most amazing view of San Gimignano from the balcony of the main farmhouse building where the B&B rooms are located.

It is a working vineyard and olive grove and they offer tastings if you would like to sample their wine and oil. It is well worth doing so as their extra virgin olive oil, Chianti and Vernaccia are fantastic. We deliberately go with half full suitcases so we can stock up!

In our different visits we have stayed in both the Orione and Perseo apartments and my husband's parents, who came with us this holiday, stayed in the Virgo apartment. All of them were lovely and what was so nice was that they were all individually designed and furnished, with a lot of furniture from Susanna's family. The kitchens in all of the apartments were extremely well equipped.

What we loved about the location itself is that it is in walking distance to San Gimignano. There is a road at the back of Guardastelle which provides you with a direct route to the town. It is a little hilly in places but only used to take us about 20 minutes to walk in (we are quite quick walkers). If you don't fancy the walk and you have a car, you can just drive up the back road and park up on the side of the road near the top.

We used to love walking up in early evening, when the majority of the tourists have left for the day, and wander round the medieval streets and have a drink in the main square. It was very atmospheric.

A new museum has opened in the town since our first visit called San Gimignano 1300 and this is well worth a visit. You can book through Susanna and Fausto and, by doing so, are guaranteed an English speaking guide. It was very informative and interesting and has a ceramic model of how the town used to look with all of its towers.

We've found basing ourselves in San Gimignano an ideal location to explore Tuscany as it is 10 minutes from the motorway to both Siena and Florence and takes only about 30 minutes to get to each place. Also, it's not that far from the heart of Chianti, taking only about 40 minutes to get to Castellina.

We love it here and are already planning our next trip!

Dear "buchanan114",
your review is one of the most complete! A lot of suggest for travellers and compliments for us.
Thanks! but I have to correct one thing. You wrote:
"you can just drive up the back road and park up on the side of the road near the top"

I have to advice that there the parking is prohibited. Be careful to the local police!!

See you next year!

We stayed in Guardastelle for 2 weeks (myself, my husband, 2 kids and my nirece) in Antilia Apartment which was amazing. The apartment itself was brillant - it had everything we needed - really beautifully decorated and a terrace which overlooked the lovely pool and the views across the countryside amazing. The property and grounds were extremely clean and kept very tidy. My husband really enjoyed his wine tasting and would definetely recommend it - their wines excellent as well as their olive oil - so good! Location is very good - 5 min drive to San Gimignano and Florence, Siena, Volterra all within an hour or so drive! The owners Fausto and Susanna (& Niccolo) are so welcoming, friendly and helpful -Really lovely and genuine couple who work so hard to produce such an amazing property and all its facilties. Grazie Fausto & Susanna for everything. We miss it already! What an amazing family holiday we had! Hopefully see you next year or maybe you visit Ireland! :)
