“Creepy but worth it”

Museo Storico Della Tortura

Never see such a comprehensive array of torture instruments, some we had never heard of before.
Awful to believe people actually carried out these gruesome and awful tortures on other human beings.
Worth the entrance fee though.

It was a nice respite from the hot crowded streets, but the price seemed a little steep for the self guided tour. The exhibits are very thorough, and creepy. It was the first thing we told people about when we got home.

This is really two Museums, located in two different buildings and very close to each other(MUSEO PENA DI MORTE and MUSEO DELLA TORTURA).One ticket will cover both museums. From the Depth point of view they consider almost every way of torture in history. From the Art point of view it is kind of basic, oriented to younger generations. Maybe it is kind of cruel to take a kid in there. You get to see reconstructions of things you heard about but never saw them, like the garrota. You kind of feel bad going in there with so many interesting historic and medieval things to see in San Gimignano, but I will never see that at home so go for it.
Lots of stairs in Museo della tortura.

What a stupid museum. In San Gimignano you're going to find a lot of interesting thing, but not this museum. All the machines are rebuilt, there's nothing original and you're going to find the same museum in Siena and Volterra too!! It's suitable for children.

Is not ideal to visit with the kids, but the museum is very interesting and gives a broad vision of the Middle Ages, customs and traditions of the time
